Is Kanye a proper legend or just another flash in the pan?

Nope

If he would focus on music instead of fashion he might end up in the top 25 or something, but as of right now? Nooope

He's obviously up there but of course you'll have plenty of "hurr durr gay fish" "burr autotune" "hurr no talent" garbage in this thread.

His run of albums from College Dropout to Yeezus are the stuff of pop legend at this point, and he's not finished yet.

I.. don't quite get with what criteria that list is made, honestly?
Greats of what? pop? music in general?

Kanye has no talent because real music is played by white people with guitars.

What?
If there's one thing black people hardly ever have been negated, it's music.

Will he be remembered as a legend like my top ten though?
I didn't even include hip hop stars.
I doubt he would make it into a hip hop top ten.

Read the op.

Isn't this comparing apples to oranges?

I mean, I'm not a big fan of the genres up there, so those people wouldn't be anywhere near my "list".

1 The Beatles
2 Bob Dylan
3 The Rolling Stones
4 David Bowie
5 Bruce Springsteen
6 Radiohead
7 Elvis Presley
8 Neil Young
9 Prince
10 R.E.M.
11 The Beach Boys
12 U2
13 Led Zeppelin
14 The Who
15 The Velvet Underground
16 Marvin Gaye
17 Jimi Hendrix
18 The Clash
19 Kanye West
20 Elvis Costello

Why no James Brown?

I like Kanye a lot. And yet this question makes me cringe. He would have a hard fight amongst other rappers or pop stars, let alone the "greats".

I'll put him on the list of "I like him", but I wouldn't dare rank him in a top ranked list of anything.

Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Beyonce would all probably be on that list before him. And that's just 3 names off the top of my head.

In 5 to 10 years time? Who knows.

Not only is this a silly statement to make because black artists are very valued, considering the OP exists purely out of black musicians really makes it even worse.

I will never understand the fascination a lot of GAF seems to have with Kanye West and trying to rank him among the all time greats. Same for that "generation defining artist" thread.

Kanye doesn't hit that shit until somewhere around 450. Do people really think he is more important in Hip Hop than Ice T, NWA, Run DMC, Public Enemy etc? He isn't. He's a cunt with a platform and good publicists.

I was making a dumb joke about yesterday's Glasto performance.

You get some decent non white people playing guitars at glastonbury.
But admittedly they are in the minority.
Mavis Staples was great, better than Pharrell at least.I was switching between them.

Seriously though, I think he's in the top 100 easily. People forget how influential College Dropout was on the pop rap landscape when it came out. And he's been riding a wave of critical and commercial success for like 11 years now. Love him or hate him, that's impressive.

Name me a rapper with a better discography.

You can't

This is where people list a bunch of better/more influential/more profitable (insert metric here) rappers and then you say:

"well, name me a producer with a better discography"

for the goalposts are constantly shifting with Kanye fans

"ok, well name me a rapper with more expensive merchandise"

You're seriously deluded if you think the totality of their material is even close to the consistent quality and influence of Kanye's.

I wouldn't say Kanye has god-like consistent quality, unless we're in an alternate dimension where 808s doesn't exist.

lol where to begin.

let's start with N.W.A.

Or do they not count because they're a group?

Is this like an old school vs "new school", where the new stuff totally doesn't matter because it's not good and Hip-Hop died in the 90's sort of thing?

serious question.

808's is his most important work dude.

Seriously look at the hip-hop landscape in the 2010's.

That shit has 808's influence plastered all over it. That album birthed Drake's career.

He'd be high-up on the producers list

His albums have done well both critically and commercially.

He's not the most talented MC or the best live performer, so he'll come up short there compared to others.

I'm not denying it had influence. I even like a lot of the things its influenced (Drake's career, Kanye's post-808s albums). I just think it's a shitty album.
