Where does the Monster Hunter series go from here?

i'd be pretty shocked if it doesn't stay with nintendo (switch)

worst case scenario (for nintendo) is they're working on a technically gimped ps4 game that'll scale with switch

Oh in terms of direction for the series i'd like more styles. Also could they make the lobbies bigger? Maybe eight player lobbies so you can have two hunting teams going at once. More weapon types are a given of course.

They really need to update that engine and get working on a different set up.

I skipped the latest one because I feel the developers are just phoning it in these days tbh.

Still waiting for more in depth hubs (at the very least).

Since it's you Giref.exe I'm going to answer thos seriously instead of giving sarcastic remark.

Switch is where MH will go. While the series born as console, it's nurtured and grow as portable game. There are many gameplay tweaks and changes that being taken for better portable gameplay. This is to be expected as MH itself grew in popularity and become cultural landmark in Japanese popular culture because of adhoc multiplayer. Capcom will go to the platform that can provide that and only Switch seems ti tick the box.

As for multiplatform release, it's very unlikely. While HD transition I believe wouldn't be too costly if they done it on Switch, it could skyrocketed if Capcom try to release PC/PS4/XBO version. Unless of course if people contend with Switch level textures. However the biggest problem lies with splitting the player base, which Capcom seems doesn't want to take the risk because of it.

If capcom decides to create HD assets to use on other platforms, they can make enough and just reuse the same shit in every release for the next ten years. Kinda like what they've already done since ps2/psp days.

3DS games with a Switch version then move fully to Switch. Give us some nice HD textures on the Switch version and we're good to go.

What I know is that I'm done with the 3DS MH (not buying XX). I love MH so goddamn much, I played thousand of hours of this series since the first freedom game on PSP. But I just can't do it anymore. I can't be arsed playing on 200p on a cramped little system wrestling the camera with a shitty nub or touchscreen. I just can't anymore. The power of the system matters little to me, just give me dual sticks, an acceptable resolution and if you feel extra awesome a refresh on all the re-used assets from the ps2 days.

Would have been neat if we'd heard about a Switch exclusive MH. Would help sell the console I think.

I love MH on the go, but what I would love even more in addition to that is a better controller and visuals, which the Switch provide.

Hopefully it reinvents itself by going fully first-person while toning down the action.
I'm new to MH threads. Is this a joke?

I swear we have this kind of thread every month now.

My answer is still PS4/Switch and a branched series. Portable on Switch, main on PS4.
What makes you think that Nintendo would lose the main series?

As for my guess, I'm gonna go with Switch/PS4 for MH5. It'll likely be mostly advertised for the Switch so Nintendo can continue to fund Western marketing.

It's a portable-centric franchise. It will probably get one more 3DS entry and then go Switch (or mobile). Maybe they will do an HD port for PS4 but other than higher rez, Capcom probably won't spring for a total remake (See Monster Hunter Tri G WiiU version).

They make their money off portable in Japan. Consoles and the West are something I'm sure Capcom wants but they are not going to sacrifice their bread and butter to get there.

Hopefully the mainline series remains on the Nintendo Switch and Capcom figures out a solution to put some of the games on PC where I think it would do quite well. I could see strong communities forming in that space for Monster Hunter.

GAFers whine for a Western-centric open world game that has practically nothing to do with the series.

Yeah it's really weird. Reminds me of the folks years ago who wanted to play Dynasty Warriors but only if they added severed limbs, blood, etc. Basically they wanted something not Dynasty Warriors.

Capcom, being an extremely unwise company, makes this and puts all of their eggs in that basket, then cancels the series completely when it bombs.

Oh like Koei did with Legends Warriors of Troy. It had all of the stuff people said they wanted but it sucked and bombed.

Yes, especially by people who don't play it

LOL

I was going to say, this series would have some serious legs on PC.

I think he was talking about Dragons Dogma.

I refuse to believe Capcom would put any real money in to Monster Hunter when their engine and assets still make them boatloads of money.

If they're smart, then both 3DS & Switch. They would be absolutely dumb to follow the western centric model of their previous games that flopped such as Lost Planet 1-3, Dark Void, Remember Me, 3D Bionic Commando, DmC, etc. all just for consoles in which the majority of the MH games had flopped on.

I love monster hunter on handhelds, but I think it's time for it to return to consoles.

I also like the big screen ones. But they never sold nearly as well. I live in Japan and I see kids at the park playing ad-hoc all the time. Consoles are kinda dying in Japan so I don't think they would move the series there. Unless the hybrid nature of the Switch gets more people playing it at home (since they can still play on-the-go as well). I guess time will tell.

Emboldened by the overwhelming success of God Eater and Toukiden on the platforms, MH5 will be PS4/PC exclusive.

I never got into the series. I remember trying a demo for the 3DS and didn't like how the controls felt. If Capcom releases it for the Switch I'll support it. I've heard alot of good things about the series.

Multi platform, but with a focus on Switch... amd why not? You can play on the big screen and portable! Sometimes I honestly think Switch was made for the Japanese gaming culture and MH in general lol. Just do it Capcom, WTF are you waiting for?

They sold a ton of 3ds games. I expect at least 1 more 3ds exclusive with 50mil 3ds' floating around, then eventually a Switch game.

I would say its definitely coming to the Switch at least. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I thought ProJared's interview with Reggie was a major hint.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_OgxrwWZU8&t=6m16s

Reggie asks Jared what unannounced third party game would he like to see come to the Switch, and he answers Monster Hunter. Now first of all, that is a strange question for Reggie to ask. Knowing that Jared is obviously a big Monster Hunter fan, this question felt like massive bait to me. Of course he isn't going to say GTA or Battlefield.

The 3DS version to come out so they can maximize sales potential.

Yeah, I know. I was just adding another example of a company taking something that's popular in Japan and trying to make it more appealing to the West. In both cases the market didn't really care about them. DD was not bad though.

I love monster hunter on handhelds, but I think it's time for it to return to consoles.

Well with the Switch you get the best of both worlds so...

Monster Hunter 5 will be Switch exclusive. Genuinely believe that.

It's really just the natural move. The franchise gets major support from Nintendo, and Switch seems tailor-made for the kind of experience Monster Hunter provides while allowing Capcom to make more modest steps forward. Plus, unless something goes terribly wrong, it is a fairly safe bet that Switch will outsell PS4 in Japan just because of handheld dominance, and MH needs that Japanese market.

Monster Hunter will eventually be Switch exclusive. The question is whether Nintendo provides incentive for MH5 to be the game that does it (and I think, after Generations, the jump in fidelity would help MH5 seem like a true generational leap rather than another half-measure).

Another 3DS entry followed by a revised G version of it on Switch.

You don't just abandon that install base.
They abandoned their base before... I mean the series got popular on the PSP. If it goes multi it'll be PS4/Switch. No chance of Xbox ever getting it.

Hopefully to the PC and PS4 at 60fps. I don't see how they could grow the series like they said they wanted to if they keep it on Nintendo hardware. People that buy and play action games are on other platforms.

I haven't played a Monster Hunter game since Freedom Unite when they abandoned PSP and I refused to play it on a DS/3DS. And I loved the games. If it's coming to Switch well the Switch is way too expensive for me and I don't want one right now.

They've got a whole fanbase on Sony consoles that they left behind who'll be willing to buy the game if it came to PS4, like me.

And... what, abandon handhelds in Japan? You legitimately believe this is plausible and makes good business sense?

I don't remember mentioning any of that. I don't care what they do in Japan as long as the game is multiplatform in the West. Calm down.

Monster Hunter's user base is not Nintendo. The game was huge on PSP as well,
Monster Hunter is not a portable game. The series was born on PS2, as an online game.

Monster Hunter's user base is where Monster Hunter goes. I believe the reason Capcom has stuck with portables is to avoid going next gen with the series, making it cheaper and faster to make.

Hopefully we'll have the next gen Monster Hunting game we deserve in 2018. I like the idea, but the clunky controls and the loading time make it almost unplayable for me.

I still have not given up hope to see MH XX on the switch..
I know, I know, won't happen
just give me the same game in cleaned up graphics, 60fps, in 1080p docked, and 720p on the go.

Calling MH controls clunky at this point is borderline trolling.

You want a non-portable MH-lite adapted for the western Audience? We got DragonDogma, and guess what, it bombed.

Like it or not, MH is a portable franchise now. And Nintendo support is the reason it is where it is in the West.
I'd love a ps4 version, but Sony support was abbysmal in the psp-ps3 era. Remember the 3rdHD fiasco.
