Where is the love? Dirt 2

Sorry for bumping but I just found out this game is coming to pc as a windows live game, I hope we get a demo soon so I can test it at 60fps on my rig.

Codemasters have the best front end devs imo, their presentation and menus are always top-notch :)

My rental for this showed up yesterday and I'm having tonnes of fun with it.

Always playing in cockpit, the rewind is a god send (totals sold on it now instead of restart) and the whole vide of the game is clicking with me.

Feels great racing going through the campaign before hitting the online, going to be holding onto this for a while.

Really scratching the itch for some good arcade racing I have.

I adore this game. It's absolutely what I want from a racer; absolutely arcade-orientated, but with enough skill needed to win races decisively that it doesn't get tired or boring. It's like a rallyesque version of the PGR series, as far as I'm concerned.

its good, but the floaty driving is worse than dirt 1 (more like grid) and braking is almost redundant on some cars. wish there were more tracks, and for some reason the level system is stupidly done, unlocking far too much too soon

This is one of the first games that I actually enjoy using the cocpit view.. is awesome.. and the physics are not bad took me one race to get used to it, and I disagree, the driving is better than Dirt1

Closing Comments
For as much potential as the Wii version had, Dirt 2 just ends up being a letdown, especially when the package boils down to being a port/crossover of the PSP offering that Sony fans are getting. The visuals are sub-par, and while the sense of speed is there you wonÂ’t find any serious customization, or reason to go back and race any of the tracks in the gameÂ’s linear career mode. You go one by one through races, beat them, and move on, and while there were times when the racing felt tight and responsive, those moments were few and far between. Two player splitscreen is included for players that want to go head-to-head with friends, but thereÂ’s no sort of online integration, and with a career mode thatÂ’s a basic as Dirt 2 youÂ’ll be looking for a new racer within an hour or so of play. ThereÂ’s serious potential in a racer with this much sense of speed and the power of the Dirt 2 branding (licensed cars, X-Games, famous names in rally racing) but the Wii version unfortunately misses the mark. Hopefully weÂ’ll see another attempt down the line with more attention given to the Wii audience, as this game is Dirt 2 in name alone. If you own a DS, pick it up for NintendoÂ’s handheld. All other serious racers will want to splurge for the 360/PS3 versions if thatÂ’s an option, or wait on our final verdict for Need for Speed Nitro coming in the next couple months.

Totally disagree, the handling in Dirt 2 is much better. The braking in Dirt 1 was far to powerful, making the car stop on a to small distance. The cars in Dirt 2 feel more heavy and the way they can oversteer so much that you can't straighten the car up again feels much more real.

Really wish the PC version hadn't been held back until December. I refuse to pay more for the console version and miss out on the mega high-res DX11 graphics.

Suppose NFS: Shift can tide me over a short while.

Just got it, am blown away. Everything good from Dirt retained, the bad stuff is gone, and it is smeared with a glossy coat of the polish Codemasters refined with Grid.

Along with Bizarre, Codemasters is now my favorite racing dev this gen.

Ha.. I finally found the option after rolling my eyes for hours while they talked to me. Your right, this really helps.

I agree, for the most part. There doesn't seem to be enough rallying. Could've skipped gatecrasher and put in more of that instead. Pretty much my only complaint so far, but it's a bummer.

It astounds me how they had the time to put in all these little details. Like in the replays, if something collides with the camera it gets all distorted and the music skips.

How do you turn off the driver chatter? I turned down the driver speech volume but this also includes the voice of the co-driver in rally stages.

I do love this. Wish there were more rally stages. Disappointed that the Battersea and Japan stages are just "stadium" ones without a proper rally section, though. Would have been nice to do a Rally round London through the parks.

I'm feeling really mixed about this game. On the one hand, I love rally games and I loved DiRT 2, but this game feels like one giant Ken Block and crew media advertisement. I liked that DiRT had some non-rally races with buggies and what not and I enjoy them in this game but the WRC side of things is virtually non-existent, it's as though it's been completely Americanised with all this X Games bullshit. Few point to point races, real lack of variety in tracks and environments.

Then the handling, theres something about it thats annoying me. When a car slides, it has a tendency to just keep sliding off the side of the track, the only way to really pull the car back in seems to be wrenching on the handbrake and coming to a near complete stop; either way you won't really be powersliding around the corner, too shallow and you just slide off the track or you turn the car 180 to a virtual stand and start accelerating from first again. Not really helped by the shit track selection.

I dunno I still like the game but it definitely seems a step back from the original which seemed to mix WRC style point to point rallying with off road Raids very well, this one just gets in your face with it's X Games extreme off roading bullshit and seems to have little to do with any form of rallying.

I hope for the next one Codemasters dump this 'Pro Street' style menu system and X Games style crap and return to a more WRC orientated title, this one just smacks of selling out.

This is because you don't know how to drift well. I only "slide out of track" when I really lost like all traction. You can have very nice inertial drifting in this game. Countersteering also works fine for me.

couldnt have said it better. drit 2 is a good game, but man - its not a RALLY game anymore. it completly misses depth and challenge. also, the rally stages are the best thing in dirt 2, but they are only a few. the whole buggy/trophy truck/raid bullshits has far to much weight in the game. also, its short on content in general and after a few hours, you have seen everything. and i dont like the floaty truck handling in this installment too.

Yeah, I dreaded the Landrush and Raid events. Baja in particular made me want to kill someone after the first few times.

I want the next Colin game to go back to the rally roots. This isn't Colin McCrae, this should be called Racedriver: DIRT instead.

<3 the Rally and trailblazer events, though. And it's still visually gorgeous.

Just picked this up today. It's good fun and looks great. I which it had more rally, but still it's pretty good.

Got into it properly on Friday night after not gelling with Shifts handling and been hooked on it since. ITs a work of art in control with G25 wheel on PS3. Up to about level 27 and done about 40% so far. Had a cracking 4hours online Friday night with it with friends as well. Laughed so much it hurt :lol

How do you turn off the comments btw as thats the only thing I dont like?

I'm a big RSC2 fan. How close is this game to it? I played the demo. It's pretty good.

I'm very much of the same mind. I've been playing Dirt 2 all weekend - and while I'm enjoying it, it's not as good as the first one. The entire game seems to have been "Mountain Dew"d, which I'm not a fan of. The car selection seems very sparse, and the events and tracks aren't as interesting and seem more repetitive. I'm also not a fan of the rewind feature. That, along with the ability to just instantly restart a race, takes a lot away from the difficulty and tension.

Like I said, I'm mostly enjoying it, but I still can't help to pine for the brutal hill climbs or the long range point-to-point tracks of the first game.

Car handling is about what you'd expect from Codemasters - arcadey goodness.

Ken Block and Co. should stick to action sports and NEVER attempt voice acting again.

Especially Pastrana, but especially Block.

You can make it as hard or easy as you want though thats the point. You can get rid of flashbacks if you want :lol

I'm spending some time with DIRT 2 after playing GT PSP and NFS Shift, and the first thing I noticed is this game looks absolutely gorgeous. It is truly beautiful. And it plays amazing too!

I picked htis and shift up at the same time

Mistakenly i thought this would be inferior to shift, how wrong i was. This game is phenomonal i can't stop playing it

The progression is right, the sense of speed is right, the graphics are insane, and the events unlike in DIRT 1 are generally fun. Seems like you can avoid those you don't like as well

Much more rallying then expected, codemasters only said 20% of it is rally but they must not be counting trailblazer which really is rally up hill

Only wish that there was more opportunities to have hte co-driver as that is where Colin Mc has always shined, they need to get the WRC licence back and make a full on rally game again

I am VERY excited for F1 2010 now if the same team is on it.

IF you go to options you can change the co-driver to technical so it sounds like Mcrae of old (ie easy 6 100 etc..).

Turning off voices as well Ive noticed it turns off the irritating chatter only THANK GOD :lol Oh where did you come from. Im on the f* track you just rammed me
Hey watch it. You just f* hit me

And so on ;) So now say bye bye to swearing back at em even though they cant hear you :lol

Finally unlocked the Utah tracks last night and the game gets even prettier. I only wish it were ALL point-to-point rally races. That would make it damn near perfect (minus the shit invasive xxtreme voice overs).

what percent would you say it is?

also, any chance you can list the number of rally/trailblazer stages?

Trailblazer makes up about another 20% of the game modes.

Unfortunately, there seems to be only one real rally/trailerblazer track for each location that features one of those modes. So a location like China only has only one of these tracks; a trailblazer track that is broken up into two different half sections plus a full section. Malaysia has only a rally stage, and it too is just one track broken up from what I recall.

There are 9 locations total, but Japan, England, and LA do not feature rally or trailblazer tracks. The track selection in this game is by far its biggest fault; it's absolutely atrocious. There's really only a handful of tracks for each of the games five (?) modes.

so im beating my oponent in 1 on 1 on the LA track, the final stretch comes up where there is a jump, prick lands on top of me and I give him a piggy back throught the finish... before I could hit the flashback the race finished and he won. wish I could youtube that shit.

Dirt 1 was just garbage, the control was so shit, it feels like it was on snow most of the time instead of dirt. Im giving it to my nephew for his birthday today. :lol

I finally got my copy over the weekend.

The controls are very much like DiRT, maybe a little more refined. I didn't like the way the car controlled in GRID so I'm glad that DiRT 2 retained what DiRT had.

The whole X-Games look and feel to the game is unfortunate though. Definitely has less rally races, the GUI with the shitty voice-overs really brings the appeal down a notch.

More DiRT is a good thing but the design...oh the design, it's really too bad :-/

I'm really enjoying this game. Looks great and is pretty intense especially with high speed buggies. Still I can understand a lot of the complaints in this thread. There isn't enough variety with the tracks, you'll race the same ones over and over. Thinking back Dirt 1 was probably better but I'm still really having fun with this one so far (level 25 or so).

Popped the game in hooked up the G25 and man what awesome fun this game is. Turned music volume to 0 and speech to 35 or so and the rest up full and cockpit view pure awesomeness.

True where is the love? and Official thread?

I've been playing this the last couple days. The rally courses are great, and I appreciated the instant restart, because I am not touching the rewind feature, it just feels like cheating. I just restart after a crash and practice until I can race the track fairly cleanly. I've even restarted some races I've won because I was really sloppy. I haven't hopped online yet (I want to be familiar with all the tracks first), but if the demo is any indication I'll be sticking to solely no-contact races. I just know how much of a dick I can be to the AI drivers (forcing them into walls, etc.), and I know others will do that to me in those stupid eight wide starts.

Sorry for the bump but is there no official thread for DiRT 2? I couldn't find it or NFS: Shift over shadowed it or it just wasn't GT5/Forza 3?:lol I love this game even if Colin would be choking fools for what they created. I do wish uphill climbing was present though..
