I spent a good deal of time at Nintendo's booth this E3. Though there were a lot of great games on display there, the two that really jumped out at me for their tight game design, gorgeous visuals, rampant pace, and just sheer awesomeness were not any of Nintendo's in-house games, but Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101.
Both of those titles floored me. Wonderful 101 was such a refreshingly unique action game. It has so much style, and the frenetic gameplay made for nonstop fun with five people. The various hero configurations they had to show off were already all fun in their own right (with the Whip being my favorite), but the promise of a vast array of them to come seemed like pure action-packed bliss.
Bayonetta 2's big gameplay reveal did not disappoint either. They showed off what I assume is the very first level of the game, and it was nonstop action from beginning to end. It felt like Yusuke Hashimoto really took to heart what was so great about the first game and upped the ante in every regard. Bayonetta looked better than ever, played just as well as always, and felt perfect on the Gamepad. The promise of multiplayer challenge levels and an ever-increasing crescendo of climax action has me so excited to play this game. Truly one of the standouts of the show.
What's the point of all this gushing? I guess it's to say that Platinum's Wii U games look to outshine even Nintendo's own efforts in sheer fun, and I think everyone over there deserves more attention. Though these games have been getting some praise, I feel like it's been more muted than incredible-looking games like these deserve.
60 FPS trailers of both games:
Bayonetta 2
Wonderful 101
Also, here's a picture of Iwata begging for his life at the hands of Bayonetta.
EDIT: Well, I knew this would go this way. I know GAF loves Platinum in general; I'm asking where is the love now that they have shown off two games that really stood out as some of the best of show this year. Since we know the media isn't going to pay those games much attention, I'm wondering why GAF's excitement for them seems so muted...
