I don't even know how to differentiate them, they're all the exact same thing. Which is fine with me, I enjoyed every campaign from the original to Ghosts, it's a breezy 5-6 hours every year. But I have no idea what my favorite would be. They're practically identical and melt together in my mind and nothing stands out, good or bad, any time I play through one. I guess I'd lean towards 2 or World at War because of the WW2 setting.

I don't get the BlOps love in here, worst two campaigns in the franchise. WaW isn't quite so bad, but MW trilogy is where it's at for the campaign.

As long as you avoid the vita version, you will be okay.
I personally enjoyed 4 and Black Ops 1/2 the most. I have to play World at War and CoD: 2 myself.

Nah, plenty of people don't like Call of Duty, but saying you don't like the series doesn't help the OP at all.

MW3 and Black Ops 2 are the ones to miss. Everything else is fine.

You could probably play them all from COD4 to Black Ops. MW3 and Black Ops 2 I found were both very forgettable.

Echoing a lost of posts, Modern Warfare 1 is an absolute must if you want to go straight to when, well they made it modern day.

I'd also recommend 2, it holds a special place in my heart.

After that if you still want more, Black Ops. I enjoyed it WAY more than I thought I would.

Since you're playing for single player, I'd recommend COD4 followed by Black Ops.
