Which Consoles Do You Feel Excelled in Specific Genres?

In the past generations I've always had 'go-to' consoles for specific genres. That's not to say I wouldn't play genres on other platforms, rather, I felt the software libraries were more geared toward specific types of games.

I thought it would be fun to look back on older platforms and their software libraries and point out which we all thought were a step above the competition, during the generation it was released, in each genre. It's all opinion of course.

I'll start:

The Sega Genesis destroyed the competition when it came to scrolling shooters. The turbografx came close, but I'd rate Gaiares and the Thunder Force titles higher than anything on NEC's console.

I thought the Nintendo 64 absolutely dominated the Saturn and PS1 when it came to first person shooters. It had more of them (as far as I know) and they were higher profile releases with big budgets. It was also the only one of the three that had four controller ports out of the box. Back then I couldn't fathom playing an FPS on either of the other two platforms.

On that same note, I think the original Xbox also excelled over the competition when it came to first person shooters. During that generation Microsoft really had a solid online model, and was the only one that had online play out of the box (a few years after launch of course) and it also had four controller ports by default.

I figure I should have at least one controversial pick, and so I'm going to say that in my opinion the Super Nintendo was the better pick over the Genesis for platformers. I never found anything on the Genesis that I enjoyed as much as Kirby Super Star, Mega Man X, DKC2, Super Mario World, or Super Mario World 2.

Wii U is a platforming monster right now:

NSMBU, New Super Luigi U, Mario 3D World, Rayman Legends, DK: Tropical Freeze.

I'm not sure any other console comes close.

Shmups: PC Engine -> Saturn -> Dreamcast -> 360
JRPGS: NES -> SNES -> PSX -> PS2
2D Fighters: Neo Geo -> Saturn -> DC -> PS2 (DC died so fast)

Those guys up there are all pretty apt. I have to add that the N64 was a haven for 3D platformers that encouraged exploration and collecting. They followed in the footsteps of Super Mario 64 and ended their tenure with people flinging the term "collect-a-thons" at them, but I enjoyed the hell out of this genre. I miss just poking around 3D worlds collecting buttons and musics notes and fairies and shit.

My perspective on the OG XB was that it was a good gateway into Western PC gaming (at that time), put onto console. It was also an almost Dreamcast 2 ironically.

Okay a slightly more controversial one:

The DS was my go-to handheld for JRPGs. It had 3D FF remakes as well as Dragon Quest remakes, Pokémon, Rune Factory, and many quirky original releases as well. I spent significantly more time with the genre on the DS than I did the PSP.

My favourite genre is JRPGs, and I felt that the DS, PSX, SNES and PSP all excelled in delivering both great quality and quantity of them. 3DS is getting there, but needs a little bit more.

Wii: Platformer, Party, Rail shooter, Puzzle
DS: Jrpg, Party, Platformer, Metroidvania
PSP: Jrpg, Action, Raid/Hunting
Wii U: Party, Platformer
3DS: Jrpg, Platformer,Puzzle

Not sure what is the main target of PS3 and 360 though.

N64- Party games/multiplayer games
PS1- JRPG's and action games in general
Dreamcast- Arcade games/multiplayer focused games
PS2- Everything
Gamecube- Adventure games
Xbox- Western RPG's and shooters
Wii- Party games
PS3- Indie games
Xbox 360- First/third person Shooters with multiplayer focus

You want arcade ports? You bought a SEGA console. Genesis. Saturn. Dreamcast. All top-notch in that department, the only exception being the fact that SNK games were more available and typically ran better on the NEO GEO (naturally).

But yeah. Arcade ports? SEGA.

I loved sports games when I was a kid so I went with the Genesis. Madden '92 is still fun to this day. Sports Talk Baseball blew my mind. Played tons of World Series Baseball and Triple Play '96. Good times.

SNES had the RPGs and platformers.

JRPGs - PS1
3D Platformers - N64
2D Action Adventure - SNES
Beat Em Ups - GEN
SRPGs - PSP
Puzzle - Gameboy

I might be kind of ill-versed on the genre, but aside from Streets of Rage (only the second game would I consider amazing) did the Genesis have any other awesome beat-em-ups?

I may be in the minority, but I really like Final Fight 3.

I'm not especially well versed in the genre either, but off the top of my head? Golden Axe and Battletoads. It's possible the SNES had better beat em ups, but the Genesis ones were much more visible at the time.

EDIT: Comix Zone too.

Ooh I cannot stand Golden Axe. I gave so many chances to these games and they're so bland. I remember playing it at a kiosk back in the day, and I hated it.

Comix Zone I actually am going to play in the coming days on my modded nomad.

Ps3 for character action games. Psx for jrpgs. Ps2 for survival horror.

It's true that the PS2 had a ton of survival horror games. Silent Hill 2-4, Haunting Ground, Rule of Rose, Clock Tower 3, RE: Code Veronica, RE spinoffs, and smaller titles like Cold Fear and Obscure.

With that said I still have to give it to the Gamecube for RE0 and REmake. Those titles remained exclusive to the platform until the next generation (and then it was on Wii) and I found them better overall than the combined library.

Just my opinion of course.

Good luck, the game is pretty dang hard. Oh and beware of bats.

What did the Genesis have over the SNES? Beat-em-ups?

Sports games, particular EA Sports games, which were all developed for the Genesis because EA blackmailed Sega after reverse engineering their cart chips. They were considered good then, too.
