At the time of Alexander it wasn't part of Greek city states, it was its own Kingdom
Macedon was its own kingdom, but they were recognized as Greeks, being part of the Hellenic World. Biggest signifier was that they were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. There was a bit of drama about that though so it wasn't 100% settled.

Became a moot point by the time of the Treaty of Corinth though.

Greece contributed far more to the ancient world for sure. There would have been no Roman Empire without Greece. With that said, Rome had far more of a lasting effect on the west up through modern times.

So, basically, Greece was to Rome in ancient times what Rome is to us in modern times.

Ancient Greece set the foundations, but mostly spent their time arguing or fighting amongst themselves.

Ancient Rome took that foundational knowledge and ran with it. Far more endured from Rome.

I like to think that, if the Romans could make movies, they would have one where a character says "What have the Greeks ever done for us?"

Rome.

The Greeks contributed a lot. Democracy, philosophy, science and mathematics.

The Romans also contributed a lot. Engineering (roads for example), law and the spread of Latin which formed the basis for a lot of current day languages.

However, Rome just wins out for one reason. Besides what they contributed, they also spread Greek culture globally. Without Rome, Greek ideas might have remained regional. Rome absorbed and expanded them across Europe.

100% on this. The expansionist nature of the Roman Empire magnified its global impact across centuries,

The perhaps unpalatable truth is that war, conquest and colonialism are effective tools for contributing to the advancement of global science and culture.
