Which Dead Rising games are worth playing and why?

Capcom Vancouver's heart wasn't in 4 and it shows. Plus they cobbled that thing together in like a year from the remains of a much darker version that Capcom Japan hated.

Dead Rising 1, and by extension number 2 (since it pretty much copies the first game, though it's not as good).

Dead Rising 3 is good, I just didn't particularly care for the way it controlled. Shooting felt off for some reason. Also the city wasn't super interesting, and there was a lot of back and forth IIRC.

Haven't played Dead Rising 4.

tl:dr version.
Dead Rising 1 is a must play classic. If you liked that, then continue on with 2, and maybe 3. Don't bother with 4.

Dead Rising 1
As far as I'm concerned, Dead Rising 1 is a must play classic. It is in my personal top ten GOAT, and I have played through it many, many times.
I understand why some people don't like it. It does have frustrating peculiarities, but to me this just adds to the charm.
The game is absolutely not meant to be beaten on the first play through. It's about learning the mall, item locations, the characters, the survivors, and the enemies (particularly the psychos).
It's a little like an early rogue-lite as there is meta-progression (on top of player learnings) that makes later play throughs easier.
The straight laced cheezy campiness, combined with an amazing characters, and phenomenal game design combine to create something truly memorable.
Cryptic Soft Spoiler: Adam the Clown and the shortcut provided are absolute key to the game.

Dead Rising 2
Not the cast iron classic it's predecessor is, but still an excellent game that is worthy of a gamers attention and time.
This one builds on the interesting overarching story arc introduced in DR1, particularly if you play through Case Zero and Case West.

Dead Rising 3
A good acceptable game. Not as good as the previous games, but worth playing if you enjoyed them and are interested in the franchise. Interestingly ties together some of the overall narrative at the end in an interesting way.
The psychos are nowhere near as interesting or well designed as the earlier games which is probably one of the more disappointing things about 3.
The DLC is also a nice addition if it was purely an alternate canon take (like OTR), but worryingly setup the future...

Dead Rising 4
Franchise killing cash in. Avoid.
Retconned the narrative and the characters.
If you're reading this whoever was responsible (developers and/or management decision makers): Fuck you.

Additional bonus tinfoil hat content.
Who knew Dead Rising 2 was predictive programming for 2020+?

The 1st game was ruined by Otis. The only real game I've raged quit in 40 years of gaming.
That bastard would phone me whilst I'm surrounded by hordes of zombies. You better well answer that phone, because if you don't, he won't stop, ever, like EVER!!!!!

Loved the original, loved Case Zero... then when DR2 proper came out I played it for like an hour and I don't know. I just didn't feel like playing it anymore. Then I played 3 and it was okay, but I loved the tight timing and difficulty of the original. One of those games I went the extra mile to unlock all the achievements. Achievements still seemed like a good idea at the time. Never grabbed or even really noticed that PC versions eventually came out, but good to know in case I ever want to revisit, I'll keep my eyes out for a Steam sale.
