Which game from this gen will be remembered the most?

Wii Sports and Minecraft are Probabily there as well. Wii Sports was a phenomenon. The impact at the time was immense.

By popularity it will be the Call of Duty games released.
By quality I think that the Naughty Dog games (Uncharted & The Last of Us).
And Demon's/Dark Souls just for the challenge haha.

My personal choice is Demon's Souls. The online concept was revolutionary, and it proved that games can still be challenging and uncompromising, yet be successful.

But... CoD 4 is the answer to OP's question.

For me:

Mass Effect series
The Last of Us
Gears or War series
Call of Duty 4
Borderlands 2
Oblivion/Skyrim
Bioshock series
Uncharted Series

Those are the ones that will stick with me the most I think.

Minecraft.

Maybe Telltale's Walking Dead, if people don't decide that the illusion of choice that it made its name on was disingenuous.

Oh, MOBAs too.

It's not the game I will personally remember the most, far from it, but Call of Duty 4 will be the most prominent game that this generation will be remembered for, much in the same way it was GTA III last-generation.

Personally, my short-list would include:

Super Mario Galaxy series
Portal series
Bioshock series
Red Dead Redemption
The Last of Us
Wii Sports
Batman: Arkham series

Call of Duty was definitely on my list, but where is Wii Sports? League of Legends? Wii Fit? World of Warcraft? Angry Birds? Farmville?

It's like anything that isn't on Sony/MS consoles just ceases to exist for some people.

Consoles have very clear generations while PC games do not. Therefore, I never really consider PC games when the word "generation" is used.

bunch of jokers here the only two options are COD 4: Modern Warfare or World of Warcraft, depending on how you count "gen".

Well, those people usually only play on sony/ms consoles so from their perspective games like Wii Sports and Angry Birds are insignificant.

I don't play Call of Duty -- or any game on that list, sans League of Legends -- but I still included it.

Is this supposed to be an objective or subjective list? Because if it's subjective then obviously it's fine if your answer is Mercury Madness or Ubisoft's Horsez. If it's objective, as I inferred from the OP, then "what you usually play on" is irrelevant.

How did bioshock innovate anything?

It just took System Shock 2 and made it worse.

And i havent played Infinite but it seems like that just streamlined Bioshock 1 (which in effect was just a streamlined System Shock 2), which i didn't think was possible.

call of duty series - for better or worse, this is the most popular video game series at the moment. it's just too big to ignore.

skyrim - i like how someone said it's the ff7 of wrpgs. totally is. not that elder scrolls wasn't a popular series, but this game is the superstar (ff7) despite how many will say morrowind (ff6) is better.

street fighter 4 - fighters are niche, but this brought tons of new life in the fgc. every evo since then has been the biggest evo ever.

demon's/dark souls - whether or not you think these games are actually hard, they got a lot of attention for it. anyone could go on any gaming website and claim this needs an easy mode, never come back, and a huge argument will just grow on its own.
i vote that it doesn't, btw hehe. leave it be!

grand theft auto 5 - it's not out yet, but if this game delivers it could be seen as the swansong of this gen, ending it all on a high note. similar with metal gear solid 5.

I don't know which planet you're living on, but Call of Duty exploded to heights uncharted could never dream of this gen. Everyone and their grand mother knows of CoD. I can think of plenty of people in my social circles that don't even know who Nathan Drake is

What part of "this gen" in the OP didn't you get? ,..............
CoD has been around since I was using a Celeron 300a.

On GAF? I think only games by Naughty Dog, From Software, and Platinum will be allowed to be mentioned when referencing this gen.

Call of Duty will be GAF's equivalent of Voldemort.

While I would be a happy camper with either Super Mario Galaxy (2), Wii Sports, Street Fighter IV, Uncharted series, Bioshock, Demon's/Dark Souls, GTA 4 (or 5), Batman Arkham series, Bayonetta, XCom, or any of the other candidates listed here in seriousness (bolded are my favorites out of those), there is one game that haunts this thread by not being released. A game that I feel would certainly have topped my list of most memorable games of the generation: The Last Guardian.

It certainly was one of my most anticipated games, and still holds that honor oddly enough. A real shame how this game went from an almost garanteed top 10 worthy game of the last generation to being either a running joke or one of the most powerful signs that modern (Japanese) game development is in trouble.

On a sidenote: we should defnitely also do a "best overlooked games of the last generation" thread. My nominees (off the top of my head): Trash Panic (Tetris with a Japanese twist and physics), Double Dragon Neon (that music, that cheese!), Kirby's Epic Yarn (that art and charm!)

Red Dead Redemption

For me, this is the open world game that hits on every chord and it unique in its setting and gameplay. GTA IV is right behind it as the multiplayer is still fucking badass to this day. GTA V, I believe, will eclipse it in terms of everything other than the setting. Last of Us is up there but zombie games have been around for awhile now and I really didn't enjoy having Ellie running around breaking immersion numerous times. Top 5 game this gen for me though, no question.

This gen will be remembered by me for this little gem originally released in 2007. It is easily my favorite game from this past era. I had a blast with it for years.

Pretty much the same list as others...

  • Bioshock
  • Uncharted 2
  • The Last Of Us
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Journey
  • Gears Of War
  • Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare

Arguably more games from this gen will be remembered than any other gen.

GTA 4 & 5
Uncharted
Last of Us
Gears of War
Bioshock
Minecraft
Call of Duty 4
Mario Galaxy 1+2
DKC Returns
Xenoblade
Bayonetta
Wii Sports
Demon's Souls & Dark Souls

10 years from now, We will still talk about these games. Either for the better or worse.

The Last of Us - For the most unforgettable video game experience
Dead Space - For a new take on the survival horror genre
World of Warcraft - For most time wasted in a game
Mass Effect series - For showing us that you can ruin everything, everything!

COD is an easy frontrunner for broadest collective memory.

But there's plenty of god tier that will equally be remembered by the gaming enthusiast masses (i.e. those that are inclined to actually have these conversations) as pinnacle games:

Gears
Uncharteds
Last of Us
Demon's Souls
Read Dead
Skyrim
Journey
GTA
World of Warcraft
Bioshock

Assemble a large enough collective of gamers who share any titles as favourites and those games will never be forgotten.

As much as some people will hate to admit it, Mass Effect 3 is one of them. They were so outraged about the ending, that we had to make a 2nd spoilers thread because we reached the 20k limit of the first one too quickly, mostly because of the ending.
