Which games has bad sequals?

I see a lot of people mentioning Forbidden West and TLOU2 as bad sequels, even when they have improved every technical and gameplay aspect over their predecessors, better more fluid exploration, better combat, hugely improved visuals, QoL/accessibility improvements. The only thing that is polarising about them is the story, which is subjective. I personally find that the story was better in the first installments of both, but the second games make enough improvements such that they feel better to play; hence i would consider both of them superior sequels.

God of War Ragnarok is different for me because i feel it does not make any critical mechanical improvements upon GoW2018. It feels like a sequel made in the exact same engine with some noticeable visual improvements, that's it.

Horizon 2 and TLOU in terms of story wise. Both were bland with terrible pacing, but both had incredible visuals and gameplay.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is considered worse than The Legend Of Zelda.
I should've seen this thread earlier. 'Worse' is not enough to describe that mess. Random encounters spawning out of nowhere in a real time action game? Wtf they were thinking? I will probably skip it.

While not "bad", the sequels to F.E.A.R. were not nearly as good as the first.

Pretty sad just how after each installment the quality went down pretty significantly. F.E.A.R. 2 felt bland and uninspiring with somehow worse combat compared to the first one and F.E.A.R. 3 was just Call of Duty with limited horror elements. I actually prefer Extraction Point and even Perseus Mandate over both of them.

The Famicom Disk System version is way better. US version was made much harder, though palaces were better in that version, I still prefer it to OG Zelda.

Horizon Forbidden West

1. Dumpy Aloy got fatter and uglier
2. She also became a complete asshole
3. The game also didn't change much after the first game besides being a bloated mess and I expected the game to be revolutionized considering how much the first game lacked in many areas but also how much money it made, I assumed they would build it out and give it a bit of charm or magic or something but no, it's the same boring shit. This was the game that made me realize Sony was no longer interested in improving games or iterating really, rather they just want to pump out the same game over and over again. Also the combat somehow became more tedious so the changes that existed weren't what I would have chosen.
4. The story was so boring but the story in 1 was okay

While I enjoyed Zelda II for the music and some of the gameplay, I don't think of it really as a Zelda mainline game in my head, it is so different.

IIRC wasn't Zelda 2 a reskin of some other game that may not have even been a Nintendo game? Seems like they got the idea for Zelda 2 from some other very similar game but I may be going crazy. I'm not sure if that is accurate.

Let me throw in Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest.

Once again, I was wrong about another Zelda game. I'm having a lot of fun know lol. Never doubt a Zelda game, just play some more.

I actually think Blasphemous 2 is worse than the first so far. I haven't finished it yet though.
It feels kinda janky compared to the original and I'm not finding the exploration as satisfying.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was bad.

- Horrible side content
- Awful story with the last act rushed beyond belief
- Miles has no relevance in the game
- MJ missions no one wanted
- Completely broken at launch
- No post-game content

Could go on and on but a downgrade over the first game in every way besides traversal.

Super Mario Bros 2

As a kid, I was so disappointed with this game. Just the pace of it seemed so much slower than the og.
Learned to appreciate it a bit more later though, but still by far the weakest 2d Mario imo.

Borderlands 3 - atrocious story

Halo 5 - atrocious story

Destiny 2 - a trainwreck that never ends

ME Andromeda - franchise killer

Dragon Age Failhard - franchise killer

Pretty much all modern sony sequels have been a step down from their predecessors

TLOU2 still catching strays lol I enjoyed it.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime

Ghostbusters: The Video Game was a great game, captured everything Ghostbusters I wanted in a game, and then this steaming pile of shit is the follow up. It's totally different and basically is just a bunch of nobodies in Ghostbusters gear with a shit story and shit gameplay. Total trash.

I tried B2 and it did not hook me at all. Biggest problem it just keep throwing exposition at you with cut scenes & talking.
Very pretty presentation mind, but it killed the pacing.

Ghost and Goblin has the the right amount of exposition IMO, devil grabs girl. Got it!

for me, aside from infamous: second son, every major tent-pole sony single-player franchise sequel (including uncharted 4) for the last 2 generations. none of them unlike, say, uncharted 2, equaled or exceeded their predecessor. that, after 5 years, astro bot is the highlight of the ps5 so far tells you all you need to know...

I always find it funny when people people knock TLOUII. The story in the first was so generic and formulaic that I never got invested into it. Executed well, mind you, but the narrative was so filled to the brim with zombie movie tropes it felt like I had ESP every time a cutscene triggered. So Part II "ruining" the story by killing Joel never bothered me. I did not play it for the story anyway. I enjoyed Part I purely for it's gameplay and production values.

Part II has way better gameplay and cutting edge production values so I much prefer it as a game. Ellie being a boss fight was such a cool concept and boss fights in general were done much better.

Only counting their first sequel since there would be many many choices if I include all possible sequels for every franchise.

The Last of Us
Fear
Silent Hill - While SH2 isn't bad but it's not as cool as SH1.

Fallout 3-4-76…All terrible in terms of story, lore, setting, quest design, rpg mechanics…Bethesda just does not understand Fallout at all hence the trashpile towns, hence the constant lore breaks and retcons. In a vacuum they are fine but utterly inferior as experiences to Fallout 1-2-New Vegas.

Funny(?) thing is, of the 5 games you listed the Destiny 2 'trainwreck' is still a league if not several above the other 4.
