Which games this generation had the worst load times?

Modnation racers on the ps3

Wipeout 2048 on the vita, pre patch, gets an honorable mention. Just to give you some insight... the patch knocked 25ish seconds off the load time and it STILL feels like a long time.

I agree with both of these.

I'm really glad I didn't have to experience pre patch 2048. I already thought it loaded slow, Jesus. It gets a pass though because it's fun as hell to play and looks amazing.

I don't really play on console so it's hard to comment but watching VGCW I can see that the Smackdown series has some god awful load times.

The frequency of load times in the Mass Effect games were a chore. Dreaded going from floor to floor on the Normandy. Never understood why it took that long either.

Naughty Dog games have a long initial load time (something like a minute), but the fact that I'd never encounter another load time in that session was a joy.

Fixed. Thankfully they put an option in the trophy patch so you can install it all at once now. Those were the worst though as you had to do the install before each chapter, even when going back to previous chapters.

But yeah, both are good picks.
Word? Does the patch supply to the original version of the game too? Adds trophies and fixes the installs??

Well, at least we don't have to nominate WWE Smackdown vs Raw (PSP) anymore.

That was truly the loading screen game from hell.

Can't find the original anymore, but here's a comparison vid to Gripshift.

Yay, looks worse than Sonic 06. Don't post town missions because those don't count :P

You're not a PC gamer unless you use an SSD. Best invention since the PC.
I like having more than a few games installed at a time on a much larger storage medium that doesn't hemorage my wallet, thanks.

Deus Ex: HR was the most noticeable to me because of how much I was a loading saves. Silent Hill: Book of Memories for the Vita also has horrendous load times.

Sonic 06 clearly wins, but the Mass Effects and the TES and Fallout games are certainly up there as well.

Also I have to give an honorable mention to the Wii U and Nintendoland before the spring update.

Makes me want to take a smoke break every time I see it.

Go try playing Lost Odyssey without installing.
We're talking 2-minute plus loading for battle, and 2min to get out of it.

Since I only had a wii until recently...
Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it just seems sooooo long in comparison to Melee. Especially for the boot up (which is approx 20 sec).

Metroid Other M: Hurray for a long loading time when going between doors quickly and booting up the game. It really makes the game even worse than it is.

Phantasy Star Universe: Also made by Sonic Team around the same time as Sonic 06. There's a load time for everything. It's even a (very boring) gameplay mechanic.

Fallout 3, it wasn't that fast to start with but after a while it nearly ground to a halt on one of my profiles, taking about a minute entering new areas or loading save files (and then there were freezes on top of that).

I suppose technically things like Persona 3 portable without the install data would win but I don't think they count.

Uncharted 2 & 3 had looong loading screens but once the game was fired up there was nothing in between

Tekken 6, now this game didn't have long loading times but it was saving/loading at EVERY little thing you did and it was annoying as hell.

For me, i would have to say Duke Nukem Forever on PS3 (i'm not sure how the other versions are). The general loading time were ok i think, but that you had to (assumingly) load the whole level again every time you die kinda sucked, especially on some parts where you might die several of times in a row.

Should have gotten the digital version, I was shocked to hear how people with the disc had to wait so long to start the game. At least there is little to no loading when you get in the game.

Digitally, TLoU is an example of near-perfection when it comes to load times this gen.
Wow, i checked a Youtube video now and the loadtime of a savegame on the digital download version on a SSD hardrive takes about 11 seconds. On the disc version it takes nearly a minute. I didnt know that it was this big of a difference. This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6wfYnYCJQI

motorstorm had 10-20 seconds of loading for each vehicle in the selection menu.
I think this was fixed in a later patch, by changing the vehicle selection menu from 3D models to 2D models if i remember correctly. But yeah, initially it took a noticeably amount of time to load each vehicle in the selection menu indeed.

But for the same price/space ratio as a Hard Drive? Not even close.

Right now I play on laptop but trust me, I plan on having an Ssd on my tower... but only as an OS drive and some smaller files probably.

It is a hard drive that never fragments, has like 10x the speed with virtually zero seek time, makes no noise, doesn't die randomly, survives 1500G and has a very low heat output. It costs a little extra, but it'll make you hate regular mechanical drives :P

Don't buy less than 120GB because it has very bad price to space ratio and get a MLC drive then. MLC is more expensive, but longer living than TLC (which the 840 is). Bigger drives live longer because they have a limited number of times every bit can be written. A regular drive will last 10-20 years at 10GB written per day. Google the differences and read the Anandtech article before you buy.

Dragon Age 2 possibly. Not only were they long, but you couldn't play the game for more than a couple minutes before hitting another loading screen.

I have to agree with Sonic 2k6. Especially annoying when doing missions. It doesn't get much worse than getting 30 seconds of loading after 1-2 text boxes or 5 seconds of gameplay... only for that to be repeated a few times.

I think there's also some WWE game for the PSP where it takes like 6 minutes before you even get to gameplay.

Lost Odyssey.

They weren't the absolute longest, but have to wait 10-20 seconds to get into battle for every random encounter was pretty brutal.

The on demand version of Halo 3 has some atrocious loading. Bungie apparently didn't think it was that much of a problem waiting several minutes for a level to load and has never (to my knowledge) fixed the damn problem. Lazy bums.
