Which games were most ahead of their time?

First person dungeons were in Ultima 1 and probably Akalabeth in the early 80's, and space travel was in Ultima 1 and 2 as well. You could also use a laser gun as a weapon!

I'm sure Phantasy Star 1 was a fabulous game, but other games have done some of it's hallmarks for awhile before it (and I'd imagine Ultima 5, released in 1988, had more 'advances' than Phantasy Star 1 had).

FF1 had a pretty sci-fi setting too, and it came out in 87.

Agreed. Phantasy Star was a great series, and well executed, but definitely should not be considered something that were ahead of its time.

Yep, this is also one of my very favorite games. Absolutely loved the experience. I would kill for another Outcast adventure and was crushed by the cancellation of Outcast II. :(

I know....I was so hyped for the sequel....beyond good and evil, although a totally different setting etc, was the only game that gave me a similar feeling this gen....they better make a sequel to that game

peace

Uh...midwinter, damocles..

Ultima ascension was also way ahead of its time. So ahead in fact, no existing pc could make the damn thing run.

Origin was known for pushing the technical boundaries....until EA destroyed them....bastards.

Jet Set Radio, PSO DC. Carrier (Amiga), Little Computer People (C64).

Carrier!

I'd completely forgotten about that, superb game. And definitely unlike anything else out at the time. Must be amongst the first real time strategy games, and in full 3D as well.

Little Computer People was something special as well. The whole illusion of a different character living in each computer. And it must also be the first virtual pet/tamagotchi as well.

Thought of another couple of Spectrum games as well:

Valhalla - Think it was the first text adventure with animated graphics to depict what happened

Lords Of Midnight - Had thousands of locations, and a mix of strategy and adventure that was completely new

Anyone else here start gaming in the 70's (basically when videogames were invented)?

I can't help but smile of at some the games people mention here... You can tell many people started gaming with the NES, or even later than that. I don't particularly like being old, but I do enjoy the perspective my age gives me. :)

It's good to see games like Archon and Ultima mentioned in this thread. (And of course, my entry, Star Raiders.) There was an entire era of games long before the NES! Long before Nintendo took over the reigns of videogaming, dozens of genres were born - from RPG's, to sidescrollers, to adventure etc. Those games were truly "ahead of their time" because they started it all!

It was an amazing time to be around. Gaming was at its most magical - it was ALL totally new and everything was an experiment (not counting the inevitable clones). I miss those days sometimes, even though modern games are far more advanced. *sigh*

Before Nintendo... games were not games... BELIEVE!

Great thread. Given that a lot of the good choices have been taken already, I'll serve up two games that tried to be ahead of their time but failed (miserably, in one case):

Dragon's Lair

PitFighter (offering "full" control over digitized visuals)

I'm still sticking with Halo. Seeing a game like that on a demo kiosk for the first time was amazing... from the sniping, the grenade throwing, the graphics, style... wow. i guess it also helped that i was 15 and not a jaded cock, but hey i really liked it.

Body Harvest on N64 was way ahead of its time if you ask me. It had the 3D GTAish gameplay down way before GTA3 did.

#1 Game that needs to be updated. Seriously.

Unreal Tournament, for one, beat Halo to the punch.

NARC beat Pit-Fighter to release by about two years for extensive interactive use of digitized visuals.

Holy crap, I didn't even realize NARC had digitized visuals. Damn, this rock is heavy.

Rescue on Fractalus,
A5200_Rescue_On_Fractalus.png

the game created the term "Jaggy" 15 years before PS2, used procedural 3d graphics generation 20 years before MS tried patenting it, and above all, it ran single digit framerates on most contemporary machines, clearly more then machines could handle in the day.
The sequel "Koronis Rift" was the better game, but it can't qualify for ahead of its time in the same way.

Tau Ceti might make the cut too
ZX_tau_ceti.png

Afaik first 3d with dynamic lighting (even shadows + day/night cycles), combining text adventure aspects with action/space exploration etc.
The only thing that casts a bit of shadow on it is the fact Elite came out first. :P

I second Carrier Command too,
ST_Carrier_Command.png

the game combined RTS + FPS/Flying shooter before terms RTS&FPS were even invented, and did a damn good job of it. Not to even mention they made a Spectrum port which rightfully shouldn't even be possible.

When I made my post I was talking about console games, what console RPG at the time even matched PS1? in terms of graphics and music and such?

you posted one shot from the spectrum version, you lose!

*LOOKS UP AT THE GUY WHO POSTED HUNTER*

I love you, do you want to shack up?

Hunter was AMAZING.

Although seeing Mercenary again really makes me want to play it....

I want to "BOARD" the "CHEESE" right now!

It and it's predecessors paved the way for career/franchise modes as we know them today.

all very good choices... ahhh the good times

For me it was Dune II, and Wolfenstein 3D.

Both of those games got a "holy *****" out of me when I first played them.

One thing about Dune II that gets overlooked or forgotten sometimes is the context sensative music. I think it was the only game I played at the time that I didn't turn the music off. For some reason they got rid of that when they put out Command and Conquer, which is the only thing I didn't like about it.
