Which is the best Mario game on 3DS?

NSMB2 gives you a billion coins at any given moment so you can easily rack up lives instantly. So while I agree it's easy, SM3DL is still on the harder end of the spectrum.

Also I mostly played it through on my hourly commute to uni/back so I actually was just playing a couple levels at a time.

I've had no problem stacking up lives in 3d land either. I'm in the high 60s now on world 5 so these infamous last 8 worlds better be extremely hard to make up for how terrible this game has been. It feels like baby's first platformer right now.

I liked the final Crown level, but besides maybe the last quarter of worlds it's not going to get extremely hard or anything. I'd honestly stay 3D World on the whole is a lot more challenging.

Lives have been easy to get in any Mario game, let's be real here.

The final eight worlds have a nice difficulty increase, though if you're any good at Mario games they probably won't be too crazy. I personally felt NSMB2 had harder levels (but not by much) with some actual difficulty coming from the DLC.
Super Mario 3D Land is a better designed game and a great showcase for the system's 3D though.

If it's 3D Land then I'm genuinely scared to find out how bad the other games are. 3D Land is insultingly simple and it's hard to play more than a couple levels at a time.

I found the difficulty to be pleasant. And while simple, my experience was the exact opposite. Couldn't stop playing. The game gets some teeth later on,
with the Crown stage and all
but its simplicity remains. But I think that's what I liked the most about it, its ease of use.

Try to avoid the tanooki suit for increased challenge. 3DL is on the easy side, but that doesn't make it a terrible game, not even close.

OT: Deciding which Mario game is slightly better than the other, ehh. Just play the one that interests you the most. 3DL is obviously an EAD Tokyo product, they are in a league of their own.

Mario Kart 7 definitely

3D Land is fun but it requires a lot of time before you ever hit the challenging maps and map remixes. NSMB2 isn't as bad as a lot of people say and at the very least it's got solid level design that's clearly less impacted by multiplayer than the console titles. It's a good game, just wrapped in that same tired mind-bogglingly insufficient aesthetic that gets put to shame by other 2D platformers left and right. Mario Kart 7 is just jammed with content and it's really fun to play. Remote play is sweet as well but the 3D is awful

does Mario kart 7 suffer from snaking or other exploits?

No snaking. Not nearly as exploitative as something like MKDS, and a great game overall. Only 'exploits' involve incredibly difficult and precise movements on some courses that even I've yet to master, and I've had the game since launch. You probably won't even notice them.

3D Land

I'm also quite fond of Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move.

Nope. As someone who felt the series was shit from DD!! onwards to MKWii (yes I dislike MKDS, whatever), MK7 was a huge return to form for me.

... Besides the god awful character roster, anyway.

If we're talking about platformers than 3D Land. It may be terribly boring with no inspiration but it's still better than NSMB. If we're including all of the series than Dark Moon, it trashes everything.

do you ever enjoy a game? Honest question.

It's no secret that the game doesn't get challenging until the back half. I'm not sure why anyone would expect otherwise at this point.

It definitely can feel like baby's first mario, but it is hands down the best mario 3ds game. If you start focusing on how easy it is you won't have any fun with it. Just enjoy the game, go for three stars on every level, gold flag poles, and have fun.

I can't enjoy a game like this when there's nothing else to it but the (relatively simplistic) gameplay. As I said in another thread this is the downside to nintendo's gameplay only focus, it needs to be fun and challenging or else why bother playing it? I have so many lives right now I don't even bother with coins anymore I just find the star coins and leave the level as soon as I can. It's not like there's any reason to stick around.

The answer to this question depends on what other systems you have, imo.

Normally I'd just recommend 3DL, but both it and NSMB2 are basically made obsolete by 3DW and NSMBU, respectively. I wouldn't take NSMB2 over NSMBW, either.

I don't think there is a "best."

3D Land feels like something new. It's a lot of fun and felt new and interesting, but I do think it's overrated 'round here.

NSMB2 has great 2D level design, much tighter controls than NSMB DS, tons of secrets to discover, great streetpass, great DLC. It's a very good 2D Mario, and I think it's unique in Coin Rush and collecting a million coins gimmick, but it isn't anything especially new. This doesn't bother me.

Also, shout outs to Mario Land 2 for its environments, and Wario Land 1-3 for their gameplay! All available on virtual console.

As far as platformers go, I really dig 3D Land and NSMB2. A lot of people dislike NSMB2 but if you're the type to 100% games I recommend it without hesitation. The secrets in this game are really well placed and a pleasure to find. I also think the base game is better than NSMB. I dont thi

Avoid NSMB DS. 64 DS is alright, but the lack of analog control and some of the changes kind of kill it for me. I dont know if it counts as a Mario game but I had a ton of fun with Super Princess Peach even if it was on the easy side.

edit- forgot about the virtual console. Any of the NES/GB games they have up there are worth a play for sure.

This doesn't stop the game from being difficult though, All lives do is allow you to continue from a checkpoint, when the levels are involving and challenging it doesn't add that much.

The real question for me is
NSMB2 or Paper mario sticker star?
cuz i hated NSMB2 (from what i played) and didnt start paper mario until now

Yes to needing to be fun, no to needing to be challenging. There's many, many reasons to play a game even if it isn't challenging. One being, well, if it's still fun. Mario games always put anything that constitutes challenge at the butt end of their games anyways, this is how it has always been. And why is difficulty measured in lives? It's like the people in the ABLW thread who said it was too easy because they never died, but they asked for help multiple times within the thread about puzzles or hints on how to get items, which is where the actual challenge is.

That being said, 3DLand is significantly different in design compared to other Marios, and its feeling of satisfaction for making jumps being lessened along with its constant barrage of powerups does make the game quality suffer imo. But I still had a lot of fun playing the game. If you're not having fun, the only thing I can suggest is to stop looking for the challenge and just chill out and enjoy the breezy level design. If that dosen't work, the game isn't for you.

Sticker Star is actually a pretty fun game. Don't let these haters cloud your judgement.

Not that is downright unplayable (but it is quite tedious and unfun a lot of the time) but I can't see any way anyone calls it the best Mario game on 3DS.

I thought NSMB2 was a piece of shit yet still liked it better than Paper Mario.

3D Land is the best handheld Mario game. Sticker Star is the worst Mario game on the 3DS.

Hey guys, Paper Mario wasn't the RPG you were expecting, but as a puzzle game it was the richest one I have played in years. It had a big variety in levels, each one as very different than the one before that and presented you with lots of tools to play with. Combat was an uninspired thing and it could have been handled better, but the core puzzle nature of the game was superb.

OP, don't get into this game expecting a Paper Mario, go knowing that it is a puzzle game first and a fun one at that.

Like others have said. 3DLand.
At first it seemed far too easy
things really get good after you beat it

Mario 3D Land is simply awesome, but it is closely followed by NSMB2.
Get both, have fun with both.
Don't listen to people saying NSMB2 is bad. It isn't. It's the best NSMB title out there, actually. The one and only black sheep of the series is the Wii title, which barely was any fun at all.

Still, SM3DL beats all of the NSMB games.

3D Land, but only if you haven't played 3D World yet.

Otherwise, when SMB3 comes out on VC it will be the best by about a million miles.

I enjoyed 3D land quite a bit, but this is the truth, 3 and World are still leagues better.

Edit: Also with Sega recently bringing out a bunch of Genesis games for the 3D classics series, Nintendo really should catch up and get some Snes games on there. Super Mario World 1 & 2, Super Metroid, F-Zero... there's loads of games that'd be great with 3D.

I really dislike NSMB2, it's probably my least favorite (mainline) Mario game of all time. Perhaps it's because I played it right after NSMBU but collecting coins just didn't click with me and I can only remember one design thing I hadn't seen in a Mario game before; being able to change the direction of those fire cannons in one of the castles.

Yeah from what I've played of both so far I'll take Paper Mario over 3D Land. They're both disappointments but there's at least a tiny bit of challenge and point to PM with those disposable stickers. PM could have been so much better if they designed it so you really ran low on stickers constantly if you didn't plan things right. As it is you get so many there's no real point to battling anything but bosses.
