Mine would be Torna titan from XC2:TTGC.

For me, that would be the Chrono series: Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Both had specially rich environments, with different locations, different moods, different everything. One moment you could be playing on an ancient temple and the next in an ultra futuristic time-frozen scientific research facility, and the next you could be in a lush swamp.

First thing that came to mind was Satorl Marsh at night in XBC1 - I remember the first time I got there in the Wii game you have this super dull drab environment during the day and once night fell I was just blown away.

I also really like XC2's environment designs.

Ulraya (sp?) at night is stunning, from the art to the music...incredible stuff.

Could post so many more.
I love the way they implemented a "tropical" water theme into the game, with lots of corals, beaches, waterfalls, indoors canals, etc.
To this date it makes the world really stand out in a genre mostly dominated by more traditional medieval fantasy or anime aesthetics.

The xenoblade franchise is also great with the awesome vistas, unique vegetation and nice use of color. I also love the concept of these worlds and societies existing on top of giant creatures.

Final fantasy IX is really good and I also really like persona 4's Inaba the rural charm of the small city gave it an extra ominous vibe because it was so friendly it was almost too friendly…

Easily Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. I couldn't find many good pictures, though. They're too zoomed in.

If considering not just visual aesthetics but environmental design as a whole, this one goes easily to the Xenoblade franchise.

Close the thread now! We have found the winner

I haven't played enough to know, but although I didn't enjoy it much FFXV felt like a pretty valid would i could drop in to

Xenoblade Chronicles X/DE/2/Torna all have great environments.

Controversial, If FF13 wasn't so linear it would be top tier in environments, playing it again on Gamepass and it still looks incredible.

I'll also give a shout out to Persona 5 with it's style, no game has yet to top P5 with it's UI

Panzer Dragoon Saga, and the overall franchise, had a very unique world.

I also love Phantasy Star II, its futuristic world was amazing. Phantasy Star IV was very good as well.

Final Fantasy VIII was pretty great too.

I think a lot of world is rather limited to what we know of diverse, unique environment.
A lot of JRPGs in general - seem to follow some sort of strict manner of Plain/Prarie - Arctic - Jungle - Desert - Volcano - Ruin - Cave types all the time... and somehow feel like rather repetitive. To be perfectly honest, it just seems like all the same formula a lot of times.

Some JRPGs seem to happen a lot in the city's limits + isekai - so for a while it felt fresher.. but also got repetitive in a while. So at this point, I'm just more or less trying not to overthink about it much as long as they are good looking ones.

I have to say it's a toss up between FF14 with it's normal environments and especially the artstyle in raids and guest raids (such as Nier raid) and Final Fantasy 9. I'm way too lazy to post screenshots.

I'm going for sheer variety of environments other than artsyle which is subjective otherwise Ni No Kuni would be up there as well as Breath of The Wild.

You're comparing polycount vs art direction + execution.

Xenoblade looks like those UE4 asset flips, where there's a lot going on, but nothing blends together, because there's a blatant lack of consistency since it's a mish mash of outsourced assets placed on top of one another.

But hey, some people even thought that the Demon's Souls remake looks better than the original, so who am I to argue with some people here.
Seriously did you really think FF12 is really better than Torna Titan lol, FF12 environment is very flat and basically just copy and paste for the entire game. There's nothing interesting going on in FF12 field exploration as opposed to Torna Titan which i considered as the best when it comes to area/section of the JRPG genre. From the unique big structures, secret locations, varied environments, and beautiful floras/faunas.

In term of art direction for the world environment alone Torna Titan is on another tier.
