Which Kingdom Hearts game to begin with?

PusherT said:
Is there a website I can get a good summery of KH, I really don't want to play the first game? I will just read the information ralating to Organization XIII origins and be done with the first KH game. I want to play all the other games though they look ace.

You really should play them all. You're judging the first game by its looks. See how stupid that sounds.

Ugh, see this is why I feel slightly burned by being a fan of the Kingdom Hearts games. I'm actually in it for the Disney characters and the story around Sora meeting up with all these wonderful childhood characters I used to know and they all had this one common universe-annihilating force of pure hatred working against them and wishing to remove everything I used to love. Sure having the Final Fantasy characters was a nice novelty but I don't know them that well and I'm glad their roles were mainly bit-pieces. The game went downhill when it started getting into all this super serious guff with Organization XIII and Nobodies and DiZ and yadda yadda yadda.

But I understand that people who are also fans of Kingdom Hearts are in it for entirely the opposite reasons, the ones who want all of this stuff and wished all the child-centered colourful stuff would go away and it'd be cool and edgy and trendy.

It's probably one of the only series of games where two people can be fans of the same games and hate each other entirely for it. Maybe that's a sign that, as well as Square-Enix has made it work against all odds, it's still an alien concept and, at its core, an incompatible merger of two cultures.

Just read the Wiki page and youtube the videos of the first Kingdom Hearts while holding a ps2 controller and pressing X over and over. It's basically like playing the game. There is very very little about Organization XIII in the first game.

This is like a girl-age thread: several posters give the OP the right answer to a question he had already decided on anyway.

While KH2 has great presentation, the first game has better gameplay and isn't as stupidly easy as the second.

Org xiii is just as dumb as anythin else in the series; I can't imagine why you're so hyped for them. This is coming from someone who likes all 3 games, too.

The jungle in KH1 was pure hell. Holy fucking shit. I never touched that game again because of that area. KH2 was much more improved and the combat was a lot more fun imo. You'd be fine just starting with the second one to save yourself the raise in blood pressure from the first game.

I love Kingdom Hearts and found the story segments just right in the first one since it tied all the Disney characters with their happy naivety and oblivious existences to the shady undertones of the Heartless and those involved (who despite not being truly menacing are enough of a contrast to even the Disney villains that they bring a sense of foreboding to the events of the first game.)

However the second game just went stupid with the plot.

Well said

I blame those deep dive secret movies!! They seemed so cool at the time...

Play which ever game you want, gaf tends to over stress the importance of playing things in order (in my opinion)

Theres nothing in the first game you couldn't understand after an hour with wiki and youtube

Really?

Both games were close enough that it's probably a personal preference, but the second game was super easy and linear. I think it also recycled too many areas as main worlds and did too much backtracking to artificially extend the game's length. It did make the gummi crap a little more bearable, though. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay wasn't terrible or anything; I just thought 1 was better.

358/2 takes place both before KH:COM and KHII, it ends before the events of KH:COM take place.
Are you sure? I thought it took place between KH:COM and KHII? Or possibly starting before COM and running through it concurrently. I def got the impression from some of the trailers that at least part of the game was taking place after
Sora was Zzzzz
.

I'm just gonna copy-paste Himuro's argument since his is less badmouthed than mine:

The exploration was a step down since there weren't as many chests and crap in high ledges that you'd need to reach using Trinity. Or the complete lack of platforming that was in the original. The original's more large stages really really made for some excellent exploration. You were always teased in Kingdom Hearts. See a treasure chest! But how the fraking hell do I get to it? This game would build up each ability you earned so that you'd have a Metroid-like sense of progression for finding and exploring certain areas or things.

The battle system was about as fun, probably more so depending on who you talk to, but it was so easy. Personally, I prefer the original. The quick events in KHII are cool, but they're essentially tapping triangle. Yawn. Triangle. Still, I think that KHII's boss fights are better than the original's, but the core battle system in the original is more satisfying. In KHII I mostly mashed the attack button over and over, KH1 was totally different. I remember the first time I fought Riku's last form. Holy shit. KH1 may have been made for kids in mind, but the difficulty is up there so that I think anyone can get something from it.

I especially loved how you had to shift through menus with the d-pad. You would multi-task like a mofo in KH1 and it gave me adrenaline rushes. It was balls out AWESOME kicking butt with attack button while going through menus to pick magic or items. Especially against the tougher bosses in the arena. Whoo boy. It was something I never really felt from an action rpg, that tension. KHII lacks it.

I'm one of the few people who liked the gummi ship in the original. It was Space Harrier-lyte. I got a kick out of making a cool decked out Gummi Ship, naming it Ragnarok and owning everything in sight. I liked making a giant cock with a pair of balls that could shoot shit from its laser hole. But KH2 took this to the next level. The gummi ship system in 2 is really, the biggest evolution between the games.

The sidequests aren't as good as the ones in the original either. Remember the awesome quest list in the main town in KH1? You had to do a specific number of things and then you unlocked more crap as you went on? Is there really anything like that in KH2?

Remember when you boot up KH and you have to pick between attack power, defense, or magic power? Is there anything like that in KHII? I don't remember. It's things like that which made KH1 for me and why I have played it numerous occasions.

The story? Let's not bring up the story.

I just felt that the original KH had more rewarding battle system, sense of exploration, level design, platforming, rewards, sidequests, story, characters and really...everything, with the exception of bosses and gummi ships.

It was just a totally creative action rpg. No, the battle system wasn't the greatest and the camera would sometimes make me want to kill myself, but that game was fun as hell. KH1 stands as one of my favorite ps2 games; KHII was just an unforgettable but still fun ride.

CoM is the best thing to come out of the series. I just wish they had been more creative with the whole memories thing.

It just looks gross kiddy and stupid. I love how the series seems to get dark and better with CoM onward. As for Card games I love em on my handhelds Metal Gear Acid 1/2,yugioh DS game etc. I'm going to go looking for that GBA version later today.
WTF is this shit!? Just play the first one first if you want to know more about anything in the Kingdom Hearts universe. Otherwise you'll just be confused as fuck. I played KHII before playing CoM and I was confused as fuck. I'm sure if I hadn't played KH1 before CoM I would also have been confused as fuck.

I could agree with Himuro's points, but considering how awful the camera was in the first game and the improvements they made to it in the second I'd have to give it to KH2 for that. Also, item selecting and magic casting in a fight was MUCH less fiddly. The number of times I'd try and pull out an Elixir during Sephiroth's fight and then he'd leap over and poke me in the eye with his long stringy arm and giant toothpick sword because I couldn't get to the item easily enough just made me cry.

Also, singalong sections in The Little Mermaid, Tron bikes and Gummi Ship sections that were more enjoyable than any Arwing section in Starfox Adventures* make for loads of fun and just an enjoyable experience.

The snazzy quicktime sections were great too, but I agree with Himuro that they made the fights a bit too dull and easy. And actually I would say the first game had better bosses, if only because the first game had Chernabog and he was frickin' huge. I was so expecting them to try and get the Firebird in to the second game as a counterpart/nod to him, but they really missed out on a golden opportunity there. Gaaach!

*Not that that was hard.

I was just curious as to why people loved the first game so much. I don't remember anything about the game. I beat it, but its like any memories of the game were completely erased. Same thing happened to me with Chrono Cross actually...

Because I don't remember anything about it, I came to the conclusion there was nothing special about it, since I would have remembered enjoying the game. Guess it's just me then.

I will never understand how this game series has so many fans
- well ones over 16 anyway
. I got bored around little Mermaid on the first one and I ADORE Disney.

I have some friends who enjoyed II as their kids got a kick out of watching it, but gameplay wise it just felt sterile.

Am I missing something or just not the target market?

Has something to do with both Disney and Final Fantasy nostalgia, at least for me. I still remember the first time I saw the Cloud/Vincent in a Famitsu issue, I was SO hyped I was certain it was unhealthy. Its an RPG, my favorite genre, and while the gameplay wasn't exactly PERFECT, it was still enjoyable.

I think what I was most attracted to was the production values of the game, voice acting and graphics and how the pushed the narrative into the next gen (its completely subjective as to whither or not the story was "good"). The voice talent the game employed and the amazing music just completed the package.

Oh and, eventually, The Chilly Academic :D

Didn't your avatar character "ChillyAcademic" vexion get killed by another Org XIII member Axel?

Play II then. They're not in the first game, and the second one spells out their motives. They're a huge part of the game, and they're awesome.
DANCE WATER, DANCE!!!

KH1 ftw. It gets unnecessarily convoluted later on.

100% this! I enjoyed both games a lot, but I felt 1 was sooooooooo much better and more rewarding to play. 2 was waaaay too easy even on the hardest difficulty and even though there was more gameplay options, you hardly needed any of them to beat most of the game and the bosses. I thought the story was so dumb with the first half having you basically chase Pete from world to world trying to catch him as he did stupid stuff in each. Once the Org stuff started happening in 2 it became more interesting, but imo its not worth playing 2 if ALL you care about is them. Plus Org XIII was MUCH cooler in CoM than they were in KH2 as well imo.

Kingdom Hearts 1 has a massive cliffhanger ending, reason enough to avoid it and just skip to part II.

good thing the second game is out!

Just play KH1. There's a few little things that'll make you go "ooohhh :O" when you play KH2. Also, they both rock shit. The only lame part of KH1 is the camera, but you get used to it. That'll make KH2 seem so much better! :D
