By no means am I a veteran of MOBA's, but I like looking across the landscape of the world's most popular gaming genre and seeing how different games choose to mold the established paradigm to fit their own unique style. While we could discuss the gameplay and/or mechanical differences between the most prominent games in the genre, I think that's better saved for another thread. I'd rather keep this discussion superficial.
Which MOBA has the best overall visual design?
When thinking of your answer, consider the following:
One thing that has always impressed me about Dota 2 is how cohesive its look is. All of the heroes in its enormous roster look like they fit together within the same universe despite the huge amount of diversity in their designs. Additionally, the vast majority of heroes in the game animate very smoothly and communicate their unique personalities and power through the combination of attack animations, taunts, and vocalization.
Another reason why I think Dota 2 feels so good to play is that its abilities all feel very impactful (compared to some other MOBAs) and are accompanied with visually satisfying effects. Chaining together a series of slows/stuns/nukes to finish off a group of enemy heroes remains immensely satisfying years into playing the game, and the visual feedback of the dying heroes lifeforce flashing up to the heavens with the accompanying sound and coin release come together to make every kill feel important and earned.
And I'm not usually into fantasy-themed worlds/character archetypes, but I feel like they were really able to craft something with its own distinct fantasy aesthetic with Dota 2. The way the Dire/Radiant sides have their own theming, the design of shopkeepers/couriers/items, and even community-made hero sets all manage to work together without anything standing out as ill-fitting for the vibe of Dota. This is especially impressive when you consider that all of this had to be essentially ported/redesigned from the more restrictive base template of the original Dota, which based most of its assets on existing ones from Warcraft 3.
Which MOBA has the best overall visual design?
When thinking of your answer, consider the following:
- Overall graphical quality (detailed character models, animations, performance)
- Hero designs (cohesiveness, personality, conveying strength/power)
- World design (stages, creeps, other items)
- Visual effects (satisfying spell animations, kill animations)
- UI design (Menus both pre-game and in-game, main in-game UI)
