Which N3DS version should I get? standard or XL?

If you want the faceplates get the original model but if you want the bigger screen get XL. Personally I enjoy the smaller models more because I feel it fits better in my hands compared to the larger ones.

anyone think they're gonna pull out a minor revision at e3? I'm waiting to snag a new one on the off chance

I don't want to say there's 0 chance of it happening, but it's pretty darn close to zero. The New 3DS is still pretty, well, new, at least for a game console, and Nintendo's clearly looking toward the NX moving forward.

Glad to see the small model is getting so much love in this thread. A lot of it still comes down to personal preference, of course, but I was kind of worried that pocketable handhelds were dead.

The SNES games on VC for the n3ds have pushed me to upgrade.

I'm still on an original model. Never got an XL. But I'm conflicted. The bigger XL screens look nice, especially coming off an original 3DS, but better pixel density and portability on the standard n3ds is tempting.

However, I've been getting bigger screens on my devices over the years. I honestly don't care for faceplates either.

Anyone with experience with both?

Edit: wrong forum. Could a mod move it?

I currently use a New Nintendo 3DS. I came over from a 3DS XL. While I appreciate the size of the console, I sorely miss the larger screens. We just bought my girlfriend's mom a New 3DS XL and it is totally awesome.

Don't get the XL. After having mine since launch I the size and just pure inconvience of the size got to me. I now own the standard N3DS and it's absolutely gorgeous to boot.

I've owned an OG 3DS, a 3DS XL, and a New 3DS

I'd say the New 3DS is the best of the bunch by a large margin. I haven't played a New 3DS XL, however, but I know it's close in size to the 3DS XL and it's just too big for me. plus the screens are bigger, yes, but the image quality takes a big hit. I always preferred the OG 3DS to the XL for that reason but that one is too small. the New 3DS is the perfect middle ground imo. it's a fantastic handheld.

I have big hands too but for some reason the 3DS XL just doesn't jive with me. it's really uncomfortable to hold and if a game uses the shoulder buttons I can only play for like 30 minutes before having discomfort.

I love my xl but the collector in me wishes we had access to the black regular ones in NA. You really can't go wrong either way unless you have Andre the Giant hands. In that case go XL.

Is HHD any good?
It's a really fun title. You can pop in, design a room to whatever specifications you'd like, and it works great with the Amiibo cards if you have any of those. It's not a full AC game, but it definitely scratches that Animal Crossing itch until the inevitable NX version. I'd keep the code, but if building and organizing rooms isn't your deal you could probably get $25 for it.

You can always import a black one from Japan.

I just bought the smaller version after owning the larger model since launch and I prefer the smaller one. The larger N3DS cramped the middle of my hands after a while and this one doesn't. Also the screen is a little bit sharper due to the pixel density, its not a giant difference but its noticeable.

Also the charging cradle is a HUGE bonus since I always forget to keep it charged.

The only problem with n3ds is the small stylus. It's really small to me and hard to use.

I don't like the stretched pixels of the XLs at all tbh.

I'm happy with my small n3ds which I upgraded from a small OG.

I had the n3DS XL but sold it on gaf ages ago and got the regular n3DS. I am glad I did! I bought some grips for it too and it's perfect. It's also very light compared to the XL.

Gorgeous cover plates!

Entirely agreed, I love the charging cradle. I definitely don't regret buying the standard size; I liked it so much at the reveal that I imported one.

XL, every time.

It's a wonderful size with lovely big screens.

If the next Nintendo handheld doesn't have an XL variant at launch, I'm out/I'll wait til it does.

I have the XL, mostly because my hands were more comfortable with the original XL than the regular original. I think I would have been happy with the regular n3DS, though. I went back and forth a lot, and when they decided to do a staggered release in the US, my decision was made. It also helps that I don't take my portable systems out of my house. If I did, I might have waited for the non-XL.

Is that a life-size WALL·E?

Hah, kind of. It's the Wall-E set that Lego released last year.

I haven't bought any *New* systems, but I have each of the old ones -- 3DS, 2DS, and 3DS XL. I go back and forth between which ones I like more. I've been wondering which one to get if I got a New 3DS too. I have some Puzzler World games (crosswords, sudoku, stuff like that), and I think those absolutely benefit from the XL screen. If I got a (regular) New 3DS, I've heard you can't transfer back to the old ones. Here's a useful picture I found in another thread:

I originally had the XL variant, but I found it too heavy when playing titles like Picross and couldn't get over the pixels being blown up compared to the non-XL New 3DS.

I picked up the white Mario matte faceplates, though, since I wanted a better grip than the AC:NL faceplates had.

Here's a size comparison with the same image (I spot passed myself after I transferred from N3DSXL to n3DS 😅) if this helps. I bought the Pokémon 20tj anniversary bundle and subsequently went nuts with the faceplates. I like it a lot.

Also that picture is in HDR so the colors look a little funky in the n3DS which isn't the case in person.

I hadn't noticed how bad the Maggie's were on the 3ds xl until fire emblem awakening. I'm seriously considering a new 3ds. I just really wish I could have an account on two systems. I'd use an of 3ds xl for certain things and the new 3ds for others.

I REALLY hope Nintendo ups the PPI on their new handheld.

I remember owning the OG 3DS and the OG XL for a while, and after playing with the XL's screens for long enough I couldn't go back to the OG, regardless of how noticeable the jaggies are

I know the regular n3DS has bigger screens than the OG, but those comparisons still make it look substantially smaller than the n3DS XL.

But I don't really carry my handhelds around in my pockets, so portability is one if the least priorities I have for a handheld.

I probably will end up getting a regular n3DS at some point since I usually do that with Nintendo systems (I have every model of GBA for example).

Get an XL. The bigger screens are nice and the difference in pixel density isn't big enough to make that a deciding factor. I forget the exact numbers but the n3DS and XL are way closer to each other in pixel density than either is to an iPhone or Vita or whatever.

I enjoyed my 2DS. I thought it was more comfortable than the DSi and older in the hand that I had before. Then I got an XL with circle pad pro and maaaan do I miss the second analog stick after getting a New3DS.. The C-stick really isn't the same. I guess a regular 3DS with the circle pad would work just fine, though. I didn't miss the bigger screen until I tried it. And sometimes you could tell how the games were designed for smaller screens.

Edit:
I tried the two size. With man-hand i keeped the XL + this:

Perfection.

Ahh, yes, of course!

I would like to use the XL for some and a new one for others, but unfortunately they can't do that, and I guess it is so you can't buy one game and share it with other people's systems. I agree about the PPI. My 3DS XL got a lot of use, but I wouldn't buy the new XL...

That's what I'm thinking. It's only a bit bigger, but I think it will make a difference with touchscreen games which I find a little harder to play on the OG than the XL due to the small screen.
