Which (OG) Gameboy games would buy today?

There's no Gameboy I would purchase today, but I did download the free Donkey Kong for 3DS via Club Nintendo, and it's great.

Licensed games were so much better back then... :(

I'm trying to think of weird sentimental choices from the past that I'd want to buy again, but honestly, my GB run was impeccable. DK94, Link's Awakening, Wario Land, Pokemon, SMB DX... all cream-of-the-crop titles.

I had a couple of those 57834975843-in-1 Hong Kong carts, so one of those, I guess.

Duh. Sorry. I can't remember if this is the game that I remember playing as Taz, or if that was a Tazmania game though.

I really enjoyed the Tazmania games on Master System and Megadrive/Genny. Probably my favourite platformer from that era. Forever alone? Who cares.

Anyway, the point being, it'd be interesting to see the GB version.

Final Fantasy Adventure is my favorite game on the platform. The start of the Seiken Densetsu series, the game is much more Zelda than Secret of Mana, but is very very good. Great music, cute little story (with a ton of falling down from large heights), I replay this one all the time. The Final Fantasy Legend series is also great, especially 2.

Mole Mania is quite fantastic, played through it the first time last year. It's a Lolo-style action puzzler where you need to not only concentrate on what's above ground, but also what's below ground. Not doing a DS version which could have used the 2 screens was a total missed opportunity for Nintendo.

Balloon Kid is a sequel to the Nintendo classic Balloon Fight, that's all that needs to be said.

Great Greed is a strange turn-based RPG with an environmental theme. One of the few traditional RPGs for the system.

Rolan's Curse is an obscure action RPG a la Zelda.

Knight Quest is a game I had as a kid but never beat, it's a one-on-one turn-based RPG with decent animation. A little simplistic but not a bad game.

Kwirk is a fun puzzler made by Atlus and brought to the US by Acclaim, kind of like a Sokoban game with a twist.

Gargoyle's Quest is a classic platformer with an RPG-esque overworld. One of the best games in the early days of the console.

Sword of Hope 1/2 are games that combine Shadowgate-style adventure gameplay with RPG systems. Never played these much but they always piqued my interest.

Bubble Ghost is the precursor to Soul Bubbles IIRC. Simple, arcadey game where you have to blow a bubble and get through increasingly perilous mazes.

Cattrap is a puzzle game with a time-reverse mechanic.

The Game of Harmony is a fairly abstract game which was made with the intent to help you relax.

Daedalean Opus (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) is a puzzle game where you try and fit a variety of pieces into a shape by turning and flipping them, imagine a cross between Tetris and Tangram.

Batman by Sunsoft
Ducktales
Motocross Maniacs
Dedalian Opus

^ all great. Most must buy, though?

Revenge of the Gator.

Lots of nostalgia bombs up in here. I don't suppose there's any chance that Escape from Camp Deadly would stand up today though?

Anyone remember the Gremlins game where you (Gizmo) would literally have to try and beat gremlins to death with a small pencil thing? The most insanely hardvgame I ever played as a kid.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie

Ha ha! I've never played this, but it is a fucking brilliant choice!

Operation C. Its a pretty solid action game, even if the jumping is slightly wierd compared to a regular contra game from the NES.

It's vicious haha. To be fair, The Amazing Spider-Man has its fair share of shoddy programming and cheap bosses as well.

Parodius and Revenge of the Joker are insanely playable though. You can beat them in short half hour bursts, which is what made GB games so great at the time.

If I was rebuilding a collection the one game I'd make sure to get would be James Bond 007.

This was my first ever GameBoy game so it would be a must. Also it's a pretty good game and an interesting take on the James Bond universe. Taught me the rules to Black Jack as well.

EDIT: Oops, didn't understand thread topic. There were a few good ones I remember loving growing up. Motorcross Maniac and NBA All-Stars Challenge 1 & 2.

But the only one I'd buy today is Shantae. I never played the original GBC version and know how expensive it is on Ebay. I hope it comes to eShop soon.

Nice to see quite a few mentions of Kwirk. It's fairly short but most of the 30 "going up" levels are very well designed, challenging and fun to solve. Pushmo kind of reminded me of this game particularly--there are lots of block pushing games but their level solutions have a common emphasis on looping paths and reversed moves.

I didn't like the timed "heading out" mode quite as well. The puzzles are mostly trivial to solve and the focus is on step execution, which is exciting albeit primitive.

Wait, did this one have the basketball player boss? I could never beat him as a kid..
Ah yes. Perhaps it did. I remember collecting meat as Taz. Now I think about it, I'm not sure I ever played Tazmania. This is the game to get.

No one for Mole Mania?

It is such a great game.

mole mania was the shit

Yup. I hope it hits the 3DS soon.

Sensible question: Do Gameboy games look any better on a Gameboy Pocket than they do on a Gameboy Color?

In my opinion original Gameboy games look best on the Gameboy SP+. Second to that is Gameboy Light if you can find one. Worst is the OG Gameboy, due to its horrible screen refresh.

Pocket has a larger screen than the OG Game Boy, which means the pixels are larger and more fuzzy. It's way better than the OG Game Boy screen though when it comes to a lot of things. The Color has a clearly sharper screen with much less ghosting etc compared to Pocket, but it's smaller. One weird thing about the Color screen is that if you raise it and lower it up and down in front of you, there will be horizontal lines forming on the screen for some reason. I've not noticed that on the Pocket. Not a complaint because you don't often do that. Just an observation. Anyone know why that is?

Battle Arena Toshinden

The Playstation version was pretty popular, but the Gameboy version never saw any of that success. It was a solid port with the full roster of characters, workable controls and a great GB rendition of the soundtrack.
