Which Psone Classics have stood the test of time and work well on psp?

I think FFVII holds up perfectly fine graphically.
Alright, I agree that mechanically, FFVII might not be as bad as I think of it. But NO FUCKING WAY it holds up graphically. Even the art in that game is bland, generic and boring. Not to mention the God awful Lego 3D models, and the continuing inconsistency in CG. Man that game was ugly back then, and couldn't be uglier at this time. :lol

Can anyone attest to how well (or poorly) FF VIII holds up story wise, in comparison to some of awesome RPG stories in modern gaming?

Suikoden I looks great on the PSP

Bloody Roar 1 and 2

Bushido Blade 1 and 2

Final Fantasy VII works great on the PSP, and I assume that VIII holds up and works just as well if not better. Both are recommended.

Other suggested Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, and while I can't attest that it works well on the PSP, it is a fantastic game that holds up really well today; I just played it on my Dreamcast last year. And if I'm not mistaken, it's only $5.99 on PSN, an absolute steal.

And Castlevania: SoTN, obvs.

Can PS Classics use the analog nub? I was intrested in purchasing Spyro, but if it's D-pad only forget it.

Also doesn't MGS use all four shoulder buttons?

Press the home button while in game and you can select custom and assign the buttons however you wish. So for MGS, I set the l2 and r2 to the shoulder buttons since they are better to use than the r1 an l1 which just toggle the items you're carrying on/off. And I was able to play Spyro with the nub using a custom scheme as well.

I used to abhor FF8, but I recently replayed it on the PSP and I now think it's one of the best in the series. It's highly customizable, and it allows for a lot of deviation within gameplay thanks to a few well placed sidequests. I think everyone should take a second look at it.

Not to mention the story is much better appreciated if you're not 15 years old anymore, Laguna is just as fun to watch as Zidane and Squall seems a lot less emo and much more plain old introverted.

FFVII and FVIII both work great. So do Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania: SOTN.

I think its really good. I'm playing it for the first time right now and im really getting into the story.

Command & Conquer Red Alert is quite good on the PSP, if you remember to swap the control scheme and can accept the lack of a mid-mission save feature.

FF7 holds up nicely. The chunky models aren't as brutal as when playing on a 40" HDTV, obviously.

Jet Moto 2 is hit or miss - a great racing game for its time, I found some of the tracks just awful to look at. I can't remember if I felt the same way 15 years ago, but by gosh, some of those textures are just shocking.

Crash Bandicoot 1 through 3 are as good now as they ever were (and they were always fucking great)
Totally agree, the Crash trilogy on PS1 still looks good and is still very entertaining to play!

Resident Evil
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil Survivor
Parasite Eve
Parasite Eve 2
Dino Crisis
Dino Crisis 2
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysey
Oddworld: Abe's Exodus
Silent Hill
Medievil
Metal Gear Solid

Final Fantasy VII stands up well and looks good on PSP.

Final Fantasy VIII slightly less due to the low framerate on the world map, but decent nonetheless.

Well it's one of the worst RPG stories ever conceived. It doesn't hold up to anything. Not that most modern RPGs are a measure of anything.

Wait, if you play Metal Gear Solid on the PSP, how the hell do you beat Psycho Mantis?

The controller port trick is not necessary to beat him, I remember playing through that game multiple times only to learn of the trick years later.

There are indeed two other methods. Either just be awesome and do it as an old school boss, waiting for your chance to hurt him, or die three or four times and Campbell will tell you to shoot the statues, this only works after he's told you about it though. I believe that's correct.

But yeah, you can change virtual ports on their anyway.

Does anyone know what the major differences are between the Castlevania:SotN PS1 and the re-released PSP version? One is 10 bucks and the other is 15, but the 15 one nets you Rondo of Blood. But I'm mostly interested in SotN, so I'm looking for the superior version of that game.

(Wow, that came out nerdy...)

I downloaded SOTN off PSN to play on my PSP. That version runs fine on the PSP. I still have the original SOTN PS-ONE disc and i couldn't tell any differences between the two.

edit - have no clue about the re-released version.

btw, SOTN is actually the perfect game for the PSP. when u play it on widescreen hdtv the graphics look pretty aged but when u play it on the psp screen it looks fantastic.

You'll encounter archaic controls in Metal Gear Solid though, but it's worth playing 45min to get used to it so you can enjoy one of the best games ever created.

MGS1 on PSP controls about three million times better than portable ops, though, so i found it pretty okay to deal with!

if you can access the japanese store then i highly recommend rakugaki showtime, einhander, fire pro wrestling G, bushido blade, r-types and um jammer lammy, but failing that you should just get driver and play the survival mode forever.

i wish they'd stick soul reaver and abe's oddysee in a store that i could use.

Quick question : in VAgrant story from the psn, it seems that the game was modified so that when playing in zoom mode the game is full screen and quite not deformed. Is it the same for FFVII and FFVIII ?

:lol :lol :lol

That is fucking hilarious. Kojima and co failed miserably with Portable Ops.

Wikipedia has a list of differences. It sounds like the one included with Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles is glitchy. Also, I don't think you can scale the image to fullscreen, which I find annoying.

Here's the link you want:

I'm not an RPG fan, but I am a fan of Squares other games. I have them all on PSone except Bushido Blade 2 (Have the Tobals, Ergheiz, Bushido Einhander blah blah) and thought 'You know, I'd really like Einhander on my PSP since the US version won't work on my PAL PS3' so what do I do?

I friggin' bought a US $20 PSN card off Ebay thinking Einhander was on the US store. Little did I realise it wasn't, I took it for granted thinking of my US disc copy. :lol Now I'm a bit pissed cos there is nothing else I want from there.

I think what I need is to find someone who wants to share Einhander and I'll score them something from the US store and share that.

Having a hard time remembering. Did Metal Gear support analog sticks on PS1? I downloaded Syphon Filter and the controls definitely did not age well. I want to download MGS but I don't want to go back to d-pad...

It did, but I don't believe it was analog controls. Basically the d-pad and analog stick move Snake the exact same way.

Either way the PSP emulator doesn't support full analog on PS1 games. When mapped to the nub, the controls still work digitally.

Crash Bandicoot holds up very well.
I popped it in the other day to just to test something and before I noticed it I had lost several hours. Very tight game.

How does Twisted Metal 2 hold up?
I still play that on the PS3 every now and then, pretty sure it'd make a good pick-up and play game on the PSP, especially if you memorize the cheats for God mode :D

I don't know (or care) how to play PS1 games on PSP, but I have a related question: How are the Colony Wars games holding up these days? I've been really wanting to play them, and I watched a few YouTube videos and was AMAZED at how good the graphics were. How's the gameplay?
