Which series has the better platforming, Mario or Yoshi?

It's a prety silly comparison considering that Yoshis Island is the only truly great Yoshi platformer, and that was Super Mario World 2.

YI is a fantastic game in many regards, but Super Mario World is a better game overall and in terms of pure platforming there is really no contest. YI has a lot more mechanics; shooting eggs, flutter jumps, ground pounding and a bunch of special abilities but SMW is just pure platforming perfection.

Yoshi's Island is like a game that has everything in the right place, inventive level design, very good length for a platformer, the beloved art style, a catchy soundtrack and a bunch of unique abilities from Yoshi himself like the egg making and throwing and the occasional transformations.
So it's a shame that as you say there isn't much flow to jumping around as Yoshi himself, playing Yoshi's Island like a normal platformer rids you of most of the fun, if you were to speed through a stage as fast as possible bouncing across enmeies heads like you would in a 2D Mario you'd miss out on most of what's there because exploring is the name of the game. This sets up a different goal, Yoshi's Island to me never felt like a game where you try to overcome the stage design itself to reach the finish (well okay there is that but it's mostly non life threatening in the long run), it felt like an exploration based platformer where you try to get as high a score as possible, such a point I believe is hit further home by how Yoshi can take endless amounts of damage (spikes and lava being the exception) and the regaining of Baby Mario becomes the priority which is easily done.

To me Yoshi's Island is better compared to the Wario land games (after 1) than the main Mario series, they have a lot more in common. Judging by their work with Wario Land Shake it and Kirby's Epic Yarn i'd say that Good Feel are an excellent fit for a Yoshi game, Epic Yarn actually feels pretty close to a Yoshi style game, point collecting, transformations, unique art style, rewards exploring the stages and even Kirby's lasso and throwing is like a spin on Yoshi's tongue and the egg system albeit much simpler.

Really this post is basically me saying, yeah it's a great game but as a pure platformer it's a bit on the overrated side.

I think that's a good point, that Wario Land and Kirby's Epic Yarn are better comparisons.

The thing is, I love those games. I don't mind the slower pace and more of a focus on exploring - I mean damn, my favorite series is Metroid. I don't mind that you're not bouncing from enemy to enemy Mario style. Even though they do something similar, I feel like they do it far better. I guess there are probably a few reasons for that.

- Wario and Kirby just feel better to control. They move a bit quicker and jump a bit higher and have no momentum killing flutter jump. They don't come to a dead stop when you jump on enemies.

- I feel like Yoshi's egg mechanic kills a lot of momentum. Stopping to knock a bunch of eggs out of a block or eat a bunch of infinitely spawning Shy Guys just to fill up your eggs isn't fun. I also don't care for constantly stopping to aim and throw eggs.

- Collecting things is more fun. I find no enjoyment in collecting coins in Yoshi. I'm only collecting them because they might be red coins, and I'm just annoyed when they're not. In Wario or Kirby, I'm super excited to collect coins because I want that number to go as high as possible so I can get the secondary goals at the end of the level.

- Finding secrets is more fun. In Yoshi, many secrets are just a matter of touching the right corner of the level and making a a ? cloud appear. In Wario and Kirby, I feel like I was particularly clever and observant when I find a nice secret.

- Levels offer more visual variety. Yoshi has a nice art style, but there are only like three or four different level themes that are repeated throughout the whole game, and many of them look very similar to each other. Whereas Wario and Kirby try to give every level a unique theme.

- Getting hit doesn't make a goddamn baby start crying while you try to grab the damn thing. You get hit, you lose some coins, try to collect what you can before they disappear, and that's that. Yet another example of Yoshi needlessly killing your momentum.

I'm sorry, have you beaten the game including all of the bonus levels?

Years ago. Though I never unlocked all the bonus levels because getting 100% on regular levels was so astoundingly tedious. It's like the worst aspects of a Rare collectathon before Rare even got into the collectathon business.

Every time I've tried replaying it since then, I've gotten bored in the second world.

I must say I'm actually surprised at some of the responses here. Thought there would have been way more love for YI.

Guess my little gaf is finally growing up. I'm so proud. *wipes tear*

There aren't many Mario games that aren't better than every Yoshi game. I'd put YI ahead of stuff like SMB1 & 2, but once you get to 3, Mario wins hands-down. I even like NSMB more than YI.

I may or may not prefer Wario Land 4 and Kirby's Epic Yarn to Yoshi's Island, I haven't decided yet
from fear of hate
. I do think that Wario Land 4 handles the exploration and collecting better.
I think I need to actually play the SNES original for Yoshi's Island before I make this decision, i've only got the GBA game to go by and my last attempt to play it was through the 3DS ambassador version which is off by comparison to the original GBA game so that hurt my last play of the game, DKC2 is my favourite platformer and i'd think it criminal to judge it by the GBA version. Still extra levels aren't to be sniffed at for GBA YI.

A few rare occasions of having to backtrack for eggs and the ghost like enemies in Naval Piranha's castle that exist to be pelted with like 5 eggs so you can progress certainly support this point. Yoshi's Story made the egg aiming a much simpler affair, some may say that makes it too easy but it's not like egg aiming in Island is a tricky skill to be mastered, it's just a bit fiddly.

Once again I agree, i'm fine with the flowers but the stars and coins are not really much fun, ideally the red coins should always be visible as red like the magnifying glass item allows.

Being fair To Yoshi's Island it has a lot of levels, each world still manages to have it's own feel even if it's not quite as pronounced as you'd expect
World 1: Flowery/Grassyoverworld
World 2: pretty basic this one, more of World 1 I guess
World 3: Jungle
World 4: Forest? and an Orange hue to the environment
World 5: Snow and Sky
World 6: Dark World and more caves
Underground and Castles being mixed into the whole lot.

Kirby and Wario do have more variety though.

Aren't there only 2 Yoshi games? Island is pretty great but Story was pretty bland and easy. It's kind of unfair to compare those to the plethora of Mario games since they play differently and haven't had their foundation built on as much.

There's Yoshi's Story on N64

Not really platformers but:
Yoshi's Touch and Go
Yoshi (puzzle game)
Yoshi's Cookie
Yoshi's Safari

Mario, easily. Yoshi's Island is great, but I prefer Yoshi as an "upgrade" to Mario (SMW, SMG2) over being the primary character.

Eh, Yoshi's Island is one of the best games ever made, but it's not really the 'platforming' that makes it great. That is, if by platforming, we mean how well the character handles and how fun and effortless it feels to jump around and navigate it from one platform to the next. When it comes to this sort of thing, nothing comes close to the Mario series.

Yoshi's Island's greatness comes more from it's inventiveness and the aiming/shooting mechanic.

This is the single thing that kills Yoshi's Island for me.

YI is a fun experience but lacks in pure platforming imo. SMW (and DKC2) spank it to hell and back in pure physics and level design. YI's secret levels are nuts but it's way too frustrating to unlock them.

Mario obviously. Yoshi Island is slower-paced and focused on exploration.

I actually really like both YI and YIDS. Yoshi Story is pretty bad though. Topsy Turvy is mediocre (and, maybe it's just me, but Bowser is impossible to beat), but it didn't infuriate me as much as Story.

Never thought I'd see a Yoshi's Island backlash. What a phenomenal game that is. Slow-paced, yes. It's an exploration platformer, and it's flawless.

Guys don't forget the dr mario-style game for the NES called yoshi. It was extremely easy and required you to chain a bunch of blocks in between egg shells to grow big yoshis for huge bonus points.

SMW's physics are still unbeaten.
Both, ground and even underwater controls are suberb (holding up/down on the d-pad to control swim strength = best idea ever).
Wha... What are you talking about??? If that's real, someone should update the "Shocking videogame secrets" thread!!!

I disagree with that, even though I've only played a bit of YS. YI uses a customizable (one click to prepare, one click to throw or hold to prepare, release to throw) one button approach, whereas in YS you need both the button and the joystick, which I believe is slower and affects the overall timing of the game.

What? You didn't use up to swim up faster? And down to sink faster?
My memory is quite rusty as I played that game when it came out in 1992 (PAL)... I might have pushed the up/down buttons without even thinking about it, as when you tilt the controller in racing games, not knowing it really affected the speed of movement.

I don't think it's much of a contest, because Mario is not only more of a traditional platformer, but overall in consistency it's much stronger compared to the Yoshi series.

Taking each game as separately though, it's no contest either (in my opinion): Yoshi's Island is the greatest platforming game I've ever played - and this is coming from someone who has grown up alongside the games.

If only there was a 3D Yoshi game, so it could duke it out against the best of the 3D Mario bunch, Super Mario Sunshine.

I prefer Yoshi's Island because of its artstyle, creativity and its gameplay based more on exploration. Plus it's the only Mario game with great boss fights!

But SMW has better platforming physics, and I can understand why people prefer it over YI. But as a whole I think YI is a much better game. It's a shame that NIntendo never managed to make another proper Yoshi game.

I was reading along with this post and nodding to myself in agreement but then the last line gave me an embolism. I don't understand how anyone could think Sunshine was superior to the Galaxy duo. It has to be to get a rise.

No way, Sunshine is still the epitome of 3D Mario for me. Almost nobody agrees though, but that's cool. Fantastic atmosphere (soooooo good), excellent exploration and awesome, variety-filled platforming are what push it to the top for me. The Mario Galaxy games were great and all, but I prefer the open design of Sunshine.

I absolutely loved the Mario Sunshine styled level in Galaxy 2 ;)

Guys, guys, can't we just all agree SM64 is still the best 3D Mario game?

Yes, seriously, and no, it's not nostalgia.

i think i now see why i like YI more than any 2D mario.
i like everything else from YI way more than what 2D Mario games provide.

But Sunshine fails in one very important area when it comes to 3D platformers: the camera.

What's this shit about "overrated". Because clearly you know why people like stuff better than they do themselves. Way to be dicks.

Also yeah, I'm not choosing either.

I never had problems? "Oh no, it's not automatic! I need to control it!" Look out everyone.

There's even a shadow of Mario when he's behind a wall. It was genius.

Speaking of 3D platformers, how would a 3D Yoshi work? I've always thought Wiimote + Nunchuk would mean we'd finally get a 3D Yoshi game - it's perfect for the egg aiming.
It didn't happen though :(

Actually it was the automatic part that failed. I wouldn't have minded if the camera stayed where I placed it.

Behind the ferris wheel was a capital pain in the arse.

This is such a strange question to ask. Yoshi's Island is essentially a mario game. I think it would be more interesting to ask which development team handles the mario style platforming better.

That was crazy Nintendo of Europe renaming I think.

You're both wrong, everyone call it Yoshi Topsy's turdy.

And yep YI is really the best 2D sidescroller.
Too bad the 2nd best to 7th best are Mario games though...

Oh and WW is a terrible Zelda game and Mario Sunshine never happened.

Mario is the best platforming series.

But Yoshi Touch & Go is the best side-scrolling action shmup platformer puzzle drawing game that exists.

Yoshi's Island is my favourite Mario game of all time so Yoshi wins by default.

Such a great variation in game mechanics, I loved the transformations and the first time I played 'Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy' I nearly lost it. So many great boss battles as well, the whole Kamek supersizing regular enemies idea was used perfectly.

Sorry Mario, there's just too much awesome to be found on YI (and all you were was the annoying baby relay baton).
