Which videogame forum did you hang on before gaf?

I did a lot of posting on both the IGN DS boards and IGN PSP boards. I didn't post anywhere else before that. I usually just got imports and would post impressions with pictures and all that jazz. I remember I pretty much bought every PSP game before they came out since I had the Japanese system. I even got a PM from some guy who claimed he worked at Sony when I posted all of the Twisted Metal cheats on there before the launch of the system. Its not my fault they used PS2 codes.

TeamXbox Forums, but those just got boring.

I found this forum when I was in computer applications class my sophomore year in high school...everything was blocked by Bess, so I typed in video game forums or something like that and this was one of the first ones, and the only one that worked.

I posted as Viper on the following:

Dimension Sega
Dreamcast Technical Pages
TheGIA
The Otherworlds Shrine

And one more very important site that I can't remember that was kind of the predecessor to Gaming-Age....can anyone remember???

cloudchaser forums. Anyone remember that one?

some names I remember from back there
Boomerangslash
Snow Wolf (i think he posts on GAF now also)
Hanzo (?)

Some fansite dedicated to PSX-era WWF Games>>Katastrophe game forums(yes thats how it was spelled)>>>>>UGO game forums>>>Cloudchaser/Xengen/MoDojo>>>GAF.

But if you count lurking I've been coming to GAF for 8 years.

GR for a bit, then GAF for teh sales data. A few of us are working on starting our own forum - It is only 3 weeks young, and we've loads of customisations to do - But we're pleased so far and the custom avatars are just awesome! I'm sure you'll agree if you take a peek GAF! :D

So did half of GAF start on either IGN or Gamefaqs?

I think there should be a poll on this. Would be easier to know where the majority of the GAF "immigrants" came from. I remember the old Gaming-Age Forums was a mess, that I didn't bother registering than.

w00t! The avatars are awesome, and new ones are being made daily. We have a dark room filled with avatar making elves!

Nice to see you register! :D

I started on this small little place called The Dragon's Wall (eventually shortened to The Wall). It was like super-micro GAF which I think I first joined because of the super intensive N64 wrestling game coverage. Eventually it faded away for whatever reason and I followed J 2 Cool over here.

Both Sonic-CulT and it's sister site NiGHTSintoDreams forums....I still go there, but the bickering can be even worse than here sometimes! (and I lurk more there as well as here!)

The forums at Next Generation magazine's old website back in like 96. When those closed, I started coming here, and visiting the legendary and mysterious "boobies.com" forum.

Gamespot. Still check in there every now and then, but mainly here. The specific game forums are nice for specific questions that wouldn't warrant a gaf post.

GameSpot, 1up, Atlus... I still use the other forums besides GameSpot, I'm dead there for flamming a mod in my profile. :)

You being a troll, I am shocked. Shocked.

I got my start on the gamers.com EGM board, which, weirdly enough, I'm kind of dissapointed that I didn't see anyone else mention. I shifted over to 1up.com when that transition was made and some time after that I started to lurk on the plain ol' Gaming-Age forums. Eventually I created this account here and when 1up merged all of its boards I pretty much decided to stop posting there. I still pop on by the EGM NGR board now and then but have pretty much given up on the rest of the site. 1up killed off the communities that had sprung up on their various boards and essentially created one horrible uber board. Which I won't go on about because a few others already have earlier on.

I was also a long time member of a smaller user created board that spun off from gamers.com--you could create and moderate your own boards there and which eventually turned into a site because of server issues with gamers.com--but it's become pretty insular and kind of stagnant over the years. Used to be a pretty fun place to post.

Now its called modojo.com. I still check it out every now and again.

next-generation for a while as The Defective Servbot, then another forum which I won't speak of nor expose my name, then GAF.

Haven't left since, yay, though I do wander to other forums, this is my mainstay.

1oop.
I lurked there before joining, then about a month later I joined GAF. I still frequent between both. 1up is a lot more low-key, which I sometimes prefer.

Dreamcast Technical Pages, then it became Always Game, then it dried up and blew away. Also I think Sega X or similar name, and Secres of Sages I think. Can't recall the exact names. I remember when Dreamcast was not yet released, frequenting several Sega related boards. Dural HQ , Dimension S are the 2 I remember.

All just dust in the wind.

GAF. You know, Gaming Age Forums. You know, the predecessor to NeoGAF.

Before that? Gamefaqs, I guess, but only reading sometimes--I didn't really ever post there until after I was already a GAF member, and that was just because of working on Animal Crossing FAQs and a Kirby Air Ride Translation.

I mentioned that too, and lol @ your slaughter comment. I can't believe how many of you guys are gamefaqs people though, especially considering the quality of this place.

PSDB
SoA Boards
OCRemix
NeoGAF

Along with a smattering of other small boards that I might have only posted in once or twice. I have never been able to really keep up with more than one forum at a time. I miss PSDB the most.

cloudchaser, baby!

there were lots of retards and racists, but it was entertaining. i remember a guy named professor k that seemed to be the head mindless fanboy, and a creepy racist named mike that always found a chance to hate on blacks and asians......good times.

yeah, the war room was encouragement for all the retarded stuff there...i think that's what made it so entertaining.

i was mainly a lurker, kinda like here....matt2k1 on cloudchaser.

#psx / #playstation -> #videogames -> #bemani / #rgvac / #arcade

Also Usenet, but please don't go digging up my embarrassing rants from 15 years ago. Who knew all that shit would be archived?! :(

But what about Gaming Enthusiast Online, the pseudo predecessor to GAF? :)

That was the place that I couldn't remember where I spent most of my time pre-GAF when I wasn't on the Sega boards.

Dimension-S

best Sega forum ever!

Heh, took a while for a D-S mention!

I've always wonder what happened to that "Ace O' Spades" fellow...

Didn't you also post on Dave's SEGA Saturn Page, along with Sabin? It had that multiplatform board, I forget the name of which, so maybe "Dave's SEGA Saturn Page" doesn't ring a bell with you. I think it did have another name for the multiplatform board...

Imagine today's GAF using the old skool forum systems...It would be a nightmare.

You got the right people (my brother used to post as Sabin), but I think the wrong board. I'm pretty sure we spent most of our time on Gaming Enthusiast Online and The Otherworlds Shrine. He didn't spend much time on the Sega pages, but I definitely did on many of them (including Dave's page).

I was a bit of a troll back in the day, but in general the level of discussion on the Sega boards was a step above most of the rest. It was late in the Saturn's lifespan that I really got into it, and by the time I became a raging Sega fanboy during the Dreamcast launch, I think everyone had moved on to other boards like GAF.

I feel like we have this discussion with a few of the old-timers every couple of years here on GAF, but who did you post as?

I started at the Gamers.com EGM forums; after NUKE, this is where EGM and all ZD magazines were at. It was a crazy place, but I really got into it, and quite a few people in this thread did too. They gave me the keys to the shortbus and let me mod the place for a bit before we moved to 1up.com...and 1up.com became my new home on the Internet.

1up.com's forums are a different animal altogether; prior to the merger, it was the real home of their user community, contrary to blogs and other such windowdressing. Almost every past and current community feature spawned from a forum idea, and I was proud of that considering I run those forums (still do :)). The merger really killed the forum's growth though - but EGM NGR still lives! ANIMAL HOUSE MOTHERFUCKERS. Finally, I found GAF via their MLB 2004 Season thread...joined to post in it, stuck around ever since.

The gamers.com splinter forum jaundicejuice mentioned was a place I used to frequent too; I still lurk from time to time to see how my old homies on the Interwebs are doing.

Anyway, Gamers.com EGM --------> 1up.com ----------> GAF.

The Penny-Arcade forums for years and years, but after awhile it started feeling like the mods were just making changes for the sake of making changes. "This is a dictatorship: If you don't like our decisions, go somewhere else!" was always the unofficial mod staff slogan, but somewhere along the idea the whole point of the hard-line stance got lost. When it started being less of a "we're doing this for the sake of the community" thing and more of a "we're doing this because shut up we're the mods and we make the rules" thing, I bounced.

Not to say it's not a great forum filled with some awesome people, I just disagreed with the direction things were headed and voted with my feet. Now that I'm on something resembling a career path, I don't exactly have tons of time to devote to forums anyway.

I was on the IGN Boards for a good while, and I'm still an Insider. It's where I get my Pikachu avatar, and besides, I'm Game Scoop's #1 fan or something, so it's only right. Plus the Mega64 vids are pretty awesome.

I don't really post at those boards anymore though. The podcast board got killed off in favor of blogs and it stopped being fun to post on the message boards when the systems came out and people couldn't argue about theoretical crap. I remember chubigans from the PS3 board, but once the PS3 came out, my time being there was over. He's pretty much the only one I remember.

Nobody will remember me from there because I have a different screen name. :)

Other than that, I did a short stint at TeamXbox's forums, and I got banned from the ToonZone forums because I went off on some kid who posted a thread about "What's your favorite Final Fantasy?" when that thread had been done about seven times before. It was too bad, I had about 700 posts at that forum. That was some overbearing moderation! :lol
