White Engine renamed to "Crystal Tools," has Wii support

How long has it been since a truely original Square property released that didnt have anything to do with FF? On consoles I mean.

The World Ends Wi...

Oh.

Driving Emotion Type-S? But that wasn't developed by Square...

The Bouncer? That one sucked... and flopped.

Umm... Probably Code Age Commanders, which would have been a new milked IP if it didn't flop so horribly.

Drakengard? That one flopped too and was developed by cavia.

Infinite Undiscovery? That's tri-Ace, and it's not out yet. Radiata Stories? That was tri-Ace as well.

UE3 engine multiplatform means Gears 2 on ps3 LOLZ!!

The engine has Wii support, meaning that it can aid in developing Wii titles, not that it will be easy to port over a PS3 title over to the Wii, which I'm pretty sure is obvious to most except those who want to get people riled up.

Square is probably just doing the 'framework' engine thing that Capcom is doing... Providing a single engine that can be used across the platforms for various titles. That's all that this really is. Not really a big deal.

More confirmation on FFXIII Wii? :o :o :o

Is FFXIII still using the white engine? I think I remember hearing a while ago that they switched to the Unreal 3 engine.

Maybe they'll use the WE for the Wii (lol) for a FFXIII spinoff or something.
UE3 is for Last Remenants, White Engine is for everything else.

No, FFXIII is still using the White Engine.

Last Remnant will be totally unrelated to FF I think.

*Sigh* Well, I guess that's the end of using a console to it's full potential... not that SE really ever pushed hardware, but still... looks like they're going the way of Capcom with a loose framework that provides a similar platform to develop on for its team memebers. Hopefully, it's initially based around the PS3 and not PC or Xbox or, god forbid, it's just UE3...

exsqueez me?

Probably due to the rising cost of games. But it does suck having all these copy and paste engines around. I'd rather have unique engines for each platform.

I don't think it's the end of the world. FFXIII's been under so much secrecy, who knows how they've optimized the engine and to what degree for PlayStation 3 architecture. I remember reading one article in specific which said they had already moved on to using 4 of the cores of the cell processor, but I don't know how accurate that is since Square loves to be so silent.

S-E's next MMO to be on Wii as well?

God, I hope not. It's bad enough that PS2 has held back FFXI. Also, no HDD, lol.

The fact that they've renamed it to Crystal Tools and that "part" of it works with the Wii should be telling people that this is much more of a dev environment than just an engine. The parts that work with Wii probably have more to do with asset-sharing, pipeline tools, etc. than with how a S-E Wii game will actually look. (That said, I'm sure there will be a Wii-specific engine that their titles will reuse, the same way they built the FF3 engine and reused it in multiple DS titles... and I'm sure it'll look better than anyone else's Wii projects, more or less.)

Just because it is a multiplatform engine doesn't mean they can't take advantage of the PS3, FFXIII will be using 4 of the Cell's SPUs, so it's definately taking advantage of the PS3 just as much as any of Sony's games.

Assuming the article is correct (thanks Chris), this is not limited to "tools" but the entire engine has been renamed, is multiplatform, and supports the Wii (partially). Anybody making this into more than it is (this is not confirmation of FFXIII, KHIII, or SE-MMORPG) or less than it is (this actually is big news) has an agenda. It is what it is.

Read:
1. This is not confirmation of a megaton game announcement.

2. This announcement itself is a miniton. Why? Frankly, the only thing we knew that Square Enix had done on the Wii was some preliminary work on FFCC:CB and it had magically disappeared about 6-8 months ago, a WiiWare title (which looks quite good), and one first person RPG slasher. The announcement itself means that something we did not know about is being planned for the Wii (assuming the WiiWare title wasn't already using this).

3. What title, then, is in development that we don't know about?

I mean UE3 wise. Everything starts to look the same.

Holy shit I just realized what they could use this engine for on the Wii.

Kingdom Hearts III, lol.

Isn't FFXIII vs in kindom heart's vein? Another KH would take a while after FF vs is done unless they get another team to do it?

FFVII Wiimake on the way.

Waggle + Cloud's giant sword = awesome real-time combat RPG

admit it

and KHIII lol

**********

Anyways I can't wait to hear real news about this.

Yes, good point. This should be encouraging for Wii owners worrying that SE had nothing else in the pipeline.

No, this thread screams wishful thinking.
The Gamebryo engine supports Wii, so it's not surprising that Oblivion turned out to be such a technical showcase for Wii. Oh, wait...

I still believe this has something to do with Crystal Chronicles being all silent and stuf. Not because of the name "Crystal tools" but because of that rumour from 1UP.
