White Night |OT| Alone in the Dark

Uh, no it's not. My logic is flawed because like, other indie games are getting covered? How on earth does that make a lick of sense? Not every indie game is going to get mass coverage, as sad as that is. And when you have Activision behind you, and on the same day they are releasing a 2nd game that's getting no coverage, I'm going to put a little bit of the onus on Activision, especially since exposure is pretty much the only reason these devs signed up with them.

Edit: Game is out now on Steam.

It's flawed because you're argument was "Activision didn't push it" and there are plenty of other indie games that have little or no marketing money either and still get coverage. Sure, Activision should be doing more to push it, and they have the money to do it, but when smaller, less-well funded teams are getting better coverage then there's something wrong going on.

There are two sizable games releasing this week, both of them arguable NOT indies, and barely any coverage at all on them by the majority of the games press, someone's not doing their job.

I've been slow walking for 20 minutes, hopefully I regain some movement soon. There is a run button listed in the controls.

Lots of shimmering while downsampling, hopefully someone finds SGSSAA codes soon

Game also has a weird Silent Hill Dog House moment where the character makes a comment about there being no blood or body despite there obviously being blood all over the ground.

Looks interesting. Will wait for impressions (since I don't have a PS4 yet :P). Hopefully it turns out good! Been itching to play more horror games lately.

You heal the first time you save (sit in the comfy chairs) so you should not be slow walking that long.

Wow just found out about that. Will definetly pick that one up. Trailer and review look awesome. thanks for the OT

Okay, just played 2 hours of it on PC. It's pretty good. I've been stuck for a while though and can't figure out a way through it so I may have to wait and have a chat with some other people who have it. I'm sure it's just me being dumb.

Here is where I'm stuck:
I'm in the secret office area and I need to find a light bulb to turn the lamp on. I've already got power to the lamp, but I just can't find a bulb
.

It's definitely got an Alone in the Dark vibe, which makes sense. You're walking around a mansion in the dark while solving puzzles like a P'n'C game and avoiding "ghosts".

There's a lot of collectibles in the form of newspapers and diaries which fill in quite a bit of backstory. Very foreboding atmosphere.

Art style is definitely interesting. It works. The whole game relies it. Got some major aliasing issues though. A lot of shimmering. Downsampling doesn't fix it.

The only source of light for the character are matches. You can only carry 12 so you need to micromanage that. They're littered around the rooms if you need to top up. You need to turn on electrical lighting in certain areas which permanently stops an enemy from entering that space and also acts as your save point by sitting in an armchair that will be in the center of that now lit space.

Overall, pretty good. I was enjoying it until I got stuck.

Definitely worth the price of entry I would say.

I am stuck here as well. No idea what to do next. I have definitely enjoyed the bit of the game I have played though. I've been aching for a new horror game with fixed camera angles, and this one fits the bill quite nicely. Combat is nonexistent, but it wouldn't suit the atmosphere the game is going for. The puzzles hearken back to the classic Resident Evil games. Well worth the cost!

Some of this dialogue is Max Payne levels of over ripe. "Scatter like a flock of dead birds"? I don't think dead birds are going to do much scattering.

Yea this is a dream for someone that loves Adventure games and Alone in the Dark. I'm fucking loving it.

It's typical noir type writing.

What if you're a serial killer and like to scatter dead birds?

I mean, not really. Constant metaphors and whatnot, sure, but generally they make sense. Hence why I compared it to Max Payne, which would get comical with some of the overwritten dialogue.

The line made sense to me, I think you misquoted it. But I understand your point. I don't think this is as heavy-handed as Max Payne, which could get outrageous.

I was stuck there for a while too, you need to
completely explore the corridor.

As for the oddly worded dialogue, it's because the developers are French and evidently did the translation themselves. The documents you find aren't as bad as the main character's monologues but still contain things like "two years old boy" etc. You'd have thought Activision would pay for a native English speaking proof reader...

I've never even heard of this game until 5 minutes ago. A black and white alone in the dark-esque Survival Horror? Bought.

Going to guess Possible Story Spoiler that
the main character is actually William, lover of the green ghost, son of the evil one, subject of a lot of the journals. Not too far in so might be off the mark but that's how I'm leaning.

What happens if I run out of matches?

Is it just game over?

I'm really not liking the limited match mechanic in a game like this where exploration and interacting with the environment is so key.

I've yet to play White Night but I've heard some very positive feedback about it. Paraphrasing heavily but these were the general impressions I got from my friend Azael who Reviewed it today.

Narrative was a real treat, use of Shakespearean English with heavy homage to American classics. Said it was an odd mix but worked quite well. Great mood, setting and overall aesthetic, lends itself quite well to what the games going for.

Stylistically a point and click adventure game as you move your character around examining objects, matches are the main source for fighting off the games enemies. Some pacing issues with the puzzles but they were mostly enjoyable.

Not that long but he said it was well worth the purchase and he found value in playing through it again today to dissect the story more.

I'm currently playing through Helldivers but this is next on my list off of his recommendation.

Are all the Boston Daily News clippings found before opening the door to the house?

I love the art-style although I did have to lower the contrast and brightness so as to not strain my eyes too much!

Just grabbed it off the store now and about to fire it up. Was not expecting this to have a platinum trophy so that was a nice surprise!

No. Boston Daily News clippings are basically hints/ story reminders so you'll pick them up as you progress through the game.

Game is surprisingly difficult the second you get stuck and start burning through your matches.

I like it though. It has a really cool atmosphere even if the scares for me have worn thin already.
