White Night |OT| Alone in the Dark

Thanks for posting the review in here. A shame this isn't getting as much talk due to tons of games being released. I hope folks give it a go when they have more time or things slow down a little in releases.
Horror games don't get as much talk cause everyone is scared shitless and gives up :P This one really flew under the radar.

Same reason Outlast and Whistleblower never got the due they deserved.

Bought this but haven't had time for it yet. Zombie Army Trilogy has consumed my life (another game not getting its due!)

This was one of the best downloadable... scratch that horror games I ever played. The art was so beautiful and I was just really immersed in it. I finished it in 2 days. It's something I really want to see more of, and it's a true shame it isn't doing well.

Oh hai there

Okay so I have played this game two times, one where I played up until chapter two and then turned it off right after you use a match for the first time, then I played it again for 10 minutes until you go back into the entrance hallway and a door is open and immediately turned it off again.

God damn.

I have a hard time playing through this game and I am only 3 rooms in.

Creepy as....

Just creepy.

I like the atmosphere, but I didn't find the game particularly scary so far. That being said, I only reached the second chapter last night.

The limited amount of matches available is irritating, especially for a completionist like me, who inspects every corner.

I just beat the game - what an incredible experience.

I am so incredibly happy at the end of the game -
dat victory lap! I spent the whole game scared of turning every corner, and then bam, all of Ch.6 is just one big victory lap, being able to freely walk outside
.

So it sounds like this game isn't getting a lot of recognition from the general gaming community, but those who did play it absolutely love it, is that right?

Someone want to describe how the game plays and the types of mechanics that are used?

Does the game become unplayable when you run out of matches? Edit: I see on this page that this question has been addressed by others.

I'm not a big Resident Evil fan but would it be correct to say that eventually Resident Evil would become unplayable/unbeatable if you waste too many bullets/supplies and ink ribbons?

And is White Night the same?

I love the game so far but I don't like limited supplies.

I've gotten far enough where I'm doing the following:

In Chapter 2, I've unlocked the room to the library. I have two mysteries I have to solve. First, I need to find the cookbook in the library which will have another key. And second, I need to find out how to activate the electricity in the rooms with the ghosts....

You can technically survive with the knife and there are bonuses for finishing the game with only 1 ribbon save. So no, you don't really need to but that is what we call difficulty scaling. Besides, you would have to pretty damn wasteful to blow all your ammunition in this game.

I've been playing this over the last couple days. I'm only around the beginning of chapter 3 but I'm enjoying it. For some reason I always get a little nervous when a match goes out because everything goes pitch black and I'm not a fan of pitch black. Still though I'm enjoying it and plan to see it through to the end.

Hm, I just preordered Bloodborne and have a few dollars left in my wallet, think i'll use them on this game. Sounds great!

finally got to playing this and while i think it's pretty fun and atmospheric so far...man, thi sgame is the fucking poster child for why i defend tank controls in old resident evil games
it's infuriating to walk around with the changing camera angles but not have character relative controls

Specially when you're fleeing, trying to escape a ghost and end up being turned around and running right into it, instant death. Those are the worst deaths, when you know it wasn't your fault and the game just fucked you over.

yeah ive gotten far enough now that there are (random?) ghosts popping up in rooms i've previously been in
and jesus fuck its hard running away from them without tank controls
sigh
i really wanna play this, but i feel like this tiny (actually, huge) issue is gonna make me just drop it
guess i'll go play RE1 again, instead

This game was really great and it upset me a little it reviewed so poorly, I really enjoyed this, look cool and really loved the fixed angles, really felt like a cool old school horror game, had some tense moments, the story was really cool I thought. I hope the guys that made this build on this.

I enjoyed it myself, but kind of get the bad reviews. The game just dragged on.

Either way, I enjoyed it. It's a game I normally would not play, but glad I did.

The game was only okay imo. I don't like being rushed (you can run out of matches very fast) and in some scenes the visual style made it very hard or nearly impossible to see the ghosts. Still, I don't regret buying it and I've got all the trophies except for the one for finishing the game in one night.

I don't really care about trophies, but I remember thinking these ones were quite cool. As for matches I don't recall that was ever really a problem for me, but I can see how if you run out of them the game would get kind of unplayable.

That was exactly why I stopped playing. Shame, because the game wasn't bad otherwise.

yeah the matches thing was a bummer. great idea, not great implementation
it's not like RE1 where if you run out of ammo, you're really handicapped but you can still get by. its just more intense
with white night when you run out of matches you're kind of fucked.

I think the matches are fine, it's honestly way harder to screw yourself over in this than in Resident Evil, (Not that it's actually possible in Resident Evil to completely screw yourself over anyway)

Much like in RE and Amnesia it's mostly a trick to unsettle you and make you think the game is harder than it actually is.

Yeah, I remember my first game I didn't know how to open a certain door and just wondered around aimlessly using my matches up and ran out. But starting it up again and conserving my matches only using them when absoloutely neccesary I had loads of them by the end of the game.

Yeah if you know where you're going (more or less) you won't run out of matches or worst case scenario you'll have 1-2 left before you find more. The problem is when you don't know where to go and you're not familiar with the room layout. :) I don't like replaying the same section over and over instead of doing a one long run, taking your time and enjoying the scenery. The idea of implementing matches wasn't awful and I certainly kept going and retrying. It just hurts the enjoyement factor imo. I think the game could've preserved tense atmosphere even without them, maybe not on the exact level but similar.

Yesah, I can see that completely, the first time I played it I didn't know what I was doing and it got pretty frustrating. For me it was just so refreshing to play a fixed camera angle again, and while not to everyones taste I liked the visual style and thought the story was cool, it might seem outdated now but I love collecting diaries and stuff in games and reading all that back story and stuff.

I'd really like them to build on what they did with this game but I have no idea if they will.

So I started this...

MAN THE BEGINNING WAS ANNOYING. I hate when character movements get impaired, ugh.

Also the matches mechanic, but by just glimpsing at the thread, I can see it's a very polarizing mechanic. I prefer to take my time and examine stuff so it's really triggering my OCD.

I missed fixed camera angles so much tho :(

Man, I want to like you White Night, but you are really testing my patience.

Ghosts instant-killing you as you walk out of a room are not hard, they are bullshit.
