I just searched myself on it and it had my previous address/phone number on it. I wasn't concerned about that, but when I searched for my mom's name, it had her current and previous addresses since I was born.

I made an account to delete all her info off the site, but it was probably up for years. Maybe I'm paranoid, but having all that personal information there for anyone to see is scary af.

The horror!

That scene in Dumb and Dumber must have been very confusing,

"Why does that book attached to the pay phone have the woman's address??"

And the results from the "Be Terrified of Everything" polls - brought to you by MSNBC, Fox and Ray Calhoun's Interior Decorator on the corner of 5th and Main - are beginning to trickle in.

As was said, how is this a problem? The company ships huge heavy books to everyone's houses with all this same information in it. Don't want people using it to find you? I guess you could dump your landline.

don't understand it either. My grandmother once said "what? people can find my number and name in the phonebook in the internet? that is not good" . my grandfather just said "why? they can just look in the normal phonebook everyone has at home" lol..

In the age of the Internet it is indeed atrocious that this information can be obtained. Names, addresses, phone number, family members...etc.

Just shrugging ones shoulders and saying "fuck it. Used to be on books" is bullshit.

Such information should be private.

Well, that's certainly pretty paranoid. What is it OP thinks anyone is going to do with the knowledge that his mother, in fact, has a permanent place of residence?

I couldn't see myself and I have a rare first name/maiden name combo. I only recently changed it.

Online though Google autofills my name. Pictures in Google Images of me and all the search results are me. I've worked super hard to clean that up. It's suceeded. Plus a new last name helps!

I'm just saying that if anyone knows your full name, they can just put it on Google and can possibly find out your phone number/home address through this site. Scares me a little bit, but people on GAF are braver than me I guess 8)

I admittedly never really looked in the Yellow/White Page books, so I don't know if they have information on everyone in the entire nation. whitepages.com does tho, so yeah js.

in germany you just call the phone company and tell them that they need to delete your information.

for example, you can't find my mobile phone number and not my address/land line at the phonebook and not on the german phone book page.

Edit: yes, I know you did that for your mother.

Used to be in books? It still is and I haven't bothered to ask the phone company to remove my info. If you want your info delisted, simply request that they do so.

What are you scared of? Like, for real? What is someone gonna do with a name and address that they wouldn't already do if they were a psychopath (literally the only people you have to worry about)?

Whitepages is the tip of the iceberg. There is a lot of public information about people available out there. Some is available to anyone (e.g. taxpayer information for all real estate) and some (e.g. drivers license, vehicle registration, and mail forwarding information) is only available to qualified parties that demonstrate a legitimate need such as attorneys or debt collectors. Services like Intellius and LexisNexis can furnish relatively comprehensive reports about people for a a fee and any potential employer, landlord or lender can pull your credit history to review. You can take steps to minimize your digital footprint but it's just about impossible to eliminate it totally.

Their details on me are completely wrong. They have some of my previous addresses correct but are missing most of my previous addresses, and have my name completely wrong.

Yes, yes, I know it's still in books but the general response here seems to be "It was originally in books so fuck it."

Thing is people shouldn't HAVE to request it be delisted. It shouldn't be listed in the first place. People should have to intentionally list their information.

We should err on the side of protecting our information. Especially now in an age where everyone has instant access to the internet.

Shit is a stalkers wet dream.
