I love how Neogaf is painted as a collective mindset when there is clear disagreement in just about every topic.
Because every mildly 'touchy' subject is usually in a 'if you're not with us, you're against us' mindset and every other opinion will be shut down by getting banned or getting your words twisted so you're forced to leave or defend yourself for a pretty neutral statement and perspective, which usually gets you banned as well. I can totally see why people think that way about GAF - at least for some subjects. Well, it's a gaming forum foremost, so I'm not sure if any serious discussions about touchy subjects has actually a place here to begin with. Best to stay away from those threads.

It's just negatively stereotyping websites people don't visit to make them feel better about the websites they do. You can already see some silly comments about Tumblr and Reddit on here and by no means are they a hive-mind either.
That's true too. I remember reading GAMESFAQ and they were pretty much hating every other site.

@OP
I still don't understand the motivation of the girl. Why did she want him to be DQed?

Wow. Shut it all down.

As much as the FGC wants to portray a community getting together for the pure fun of playing fighting games, a lot of the hype as well as the negative 'drama' in the scene is due to the betting.

Betting/money matching as a common trend is relatively recent in my area.
Hype and drama over fighting games we've still had from day one though.

what the fuck does that even mean?

It's basically a derogatory term to refer to straight people that they made up. They would claim that it is a "neutral" term, but you'll hardly catch any of them using it in anything but a negative way. Basically, because your sexual orientation matches your physical parts, you are an oppressive shitlord. And if male, probably a rapist.

Typically anyone who would actually use this term is the type of person who lives in a bubble and is possibly more racist and more sexist than anyone you've ever met.

Cisgender has nothing to do with being straight. Or does it refer to sexual orientation at all. It is when your gender identity matches the one that is given to you at birth. But keep making assumptions about people who use a word you don't even understand.

That was hilarious.

I mean people can't be serious having a go at him are they?

You mean you've never celebrated wildly or acted like a bit smug when you've beat your friend when he or she is over?

Come on.

The look of sheer confusion on his face when she grabs him kills me.

If you've ever been to a small LAN gathering then you know this shit happens all the time. Frankly, never put your hands on another person. Ever.

Why is it used as slur towards people though?

Straight people are easily the largest demographic of "cisgendered" people and are usually the targets of the term, but I did say that it's about your body/mind matching. I think sexual orientation frequently follows, though you're right. A dude who likes ladies could want to be a lady who likes ladies and therefore wouldn't be 'cisgendered' but would still be technically straight.

And as you can see in the very video posted, it is definitely used as a general slur of vague definition. I frequently see it used in the same way.

But I'm not interested in arguing about it, clarify for everyone else here until you are content. The tumblr activist bubble is something I like to keep a safe distance from. There is a lot of hate inside of it. A scary amount of crazy hate.

Don't get why people act like the FGC is some terrible community all the time.

It's damn sure more entertaining and fun than any other gaming community.

it's like the least offensive gaming community out there

and i hate fighting games

Man I love fighting games, but I'll never get into the scene because of stuff like this right here.
Holy fuck posts like this are so infuriating. This is like saying you refuse to travel to the US because of crazy gun nuts. The scene isnt full of this and has a lot of welcoming people. If you dont get into the scene thats fine, but dont act like this is indicative of the scene as a whole. Its ignorant.
Speaking of Dark Prince I saw him at Evo 2013, recognized the voice right away. Naturally he was chilling around the MvC2 casuals.

In my experience these tournaments are a bunch of people just yelling out phrases they read on the internet. Walk into a Smash tournament and within 3 minutes you'll guaranteed hear "so salty", "i can't even", "believe", "the hype is real" etc.

Next tourney I'm getting "who bitch this is" started.
My experience too. Got old very quickly. Not that everyone does it but there's enough people doing it that it got on my nerves.

Dude looks just like Donald Glover. Holy shit.

Considering how many people are killed and accidentally shot in USA by guns, especially kids, actually it's kind of reasonable to not want to travel to the USA.

Yea, I think CoD tournaments, at least back during MW2 to BO2/MW3, are much more toxic than anything in the FGC. It was so much more immature and just annoying to watch.

Besides this whole middle class morality as to how people should behave in social settings is tiresome. I understand that some people are sensitive and can not tolerate smack talk after they make a mistake or are exposed but this is how the community operates.

It is mostly in good spirit, because after playing against one another these people are friends and are generally speaking having a good time. The mentality is different to CS 1.6 nonsense. I played that game rather competitively a decade ago and it was just a bunch of teenagers screaming to one another in mIRC, refusing to accept match results and so on. There was no intent to push people being better players, it was just nasty from the get-go.

Precisely because some people are dumb and don't even know what they're saying in the first place.

Yep, it was a term long before some idiot tumblr users latched on to it.

You said sexual orientation matching physical parts and in your example they would be a lesbian.

If you're going to go off on a rant about tumblr activists, at least know what you are arguing against. Saying cisgender is a made up word that only sexists or racists would use shows that you have little understanding as to why it exists. Tumblr didn't create the word.

I don't play fighting games and it seems like a fun community. I wouldn't mind going to one of those one day.

That's a Smash tournament, though.

If youre going to write off an entire country that vast with that many different areas and people I think thats idiotic. Ive been to places in the States and Ive always felt safe

cisgendered shouldn't be an insult, there's nothing wrong with it just like there's nothing wrong with being trans.
There's nothing wrong with being trans, of course, that goes without saying (at least for me). But "cis" people didn't choose that label and should feel free to object to it. We all have the right to be referred to as we choose.

You consider a male with male parts that desires to be female but still likes women already a lesbian?

Yes. They may not have transitioned, as in appearing as the gender they identify with or take hormones, but they would still be a woman. Many trans people know from a young age that they are not the gender they were assigned because of their genitalia. Getting surgery may help with dysphoria, but wouldn't make them more man or woman than they already were.

Then how would we describe people whose gender matches the one they were given at birth? I see cis as a useful descriptor and don't understand why there is so much push back towards that word. There are some assholes who use bisexual, straight, or gay as an insult but that doesn't mean the word is bad but its usage.
