As much as I would like to see Sony releasing first, Microsoft will beat them to release.

They will make a huge splash of it being a worldwide release, understock, and systematically report how it's being sold out everywhere for maximum marketing effect (a bit like Nintendo did with the Wii).

Make no mistakes, Microsoft are the most likely to rush a launch. All they care about is being first to market, they don't care silly things like hardware quality.

Having said that, regardless of how far apart both releases will be, it won't make a big difference for either of them - informed gamers, who still are the early buyers, will decide which system to buy based on E3.

That's an incredibly big statement to the contrary of popular belief. It's not just "no, I believe MS is first", but actually that most of us are "fucking delusional".

If you'd paid interest in this race, you'd know it's without doubt MS that's scrambling. Sony has managed to force their hand, and in reaction, MS seems to have thrown together something quick and dirty. I think it shows. And by that I mean the philosophy, lack of games, merely talk of "all the great games to come". It seems to be no doubt that MS are the infamous six months behind in development as rumored around here. Sony's conference didn't blow me away, but that's because it was a steady, good reveal. Lots of meaty content, not just scramble-mode CGI and "look at the graphics of this cut scene!" - I felt deceived by Microsoft, and they want be to believe they're more ready than they are.

The fact that Sony hasn't showed their console design yet, might just be another way to steal MS' thunder, when we're getting closer to release. Maybe they're still finalizing it, but you know what? That's great. We know the components are in place. We know what the system is going to consist of. If you test that a lot, and do find a good design, then it's just likely Sony will beat MS with a better functional case for their console yet again. Because god fucking damnit the 360 is as loud as a fucking leaf-blower.

It's also likely that despite Sony not having finished the design, if that were the case, they were so content they could control that process in time for the actual release, that they decided to reveal the console sooner than they would, and in response, Microsoft had to throw something forced together. In that case, it was great work by Sony.

Yes, because the 4 months in between are crucial, and enough, for designing the hardware.
That E3 teaser is just meant to trick us into believing that they ever worked on it.

How can you be so sure that MS had finalised its hardware back in February too? You'd expect both companies to have the hardware locked down at this point.

As for who will release first? Providing they're both in 2013, it doesn't matter in the slightest. I reckon we'll see a bit of time between them, but nothing major. Nov/Dec for both systems (in the three major territories). I wouldn't like to guess which way round they'll be; the only thing we've really heard about the relative progress is that Sony's dev tools are a few months more advanced.

They will launch on the same night, but Microsoft will negotiate with Wal-Mart to start the Xbox checkout process 5 minutes sooner.

I'm going with MS, we've seen the box, we've even seen inside the box and we've seen the OS running, the first parties have been quiet for years so the games must be well on their way. Havent seen enough of the PS4 to justify picking Sony first, securing all that Gddr5 ram might prove tricky until production is ramped up.

From everything we have heard and seen, Sony seems to be the most prepared to launch first. Especially when developers like Avalanche came out and said that Sony's dev tool environment was much more mature than the Xbox. Then again I never underestimate Microsoft's sheer will to push something to release before it is ready. Now more than ever they seem willing to out spend the competition, so who knows what type of cash they are willing to blow.

Microsoft mentioning that a lot of their Xbox One policies are still up for debate, and no units actually shown running software gives me doubts as well.

We also saw Knack played during the remote play segment, and saw more gameplay of it in snippets later in the presentation. Also Game Informer was at Sucker Punch a month ago and saw Infamous Second Son in playable form. Soooo yea.

What I'm saying is, Sony had a lot to show back in Feb (more than Microsoft did this month). They even showed the final design of the box (in teaser form) the day before Microsoft's press conference, so that argument has absolutely no relevance.

There's no reason to think Sony won't launch first. It's definitely possible. But to call people "delusional" for saying so is ridiculous.

Did you forget about the demonstration of Knack? How can you even reasonably judge the quality of the next Killzone at this point in time? It doesn't even matter anyway, as we didn't see any gameplay at all at the Xbone conference.

Are you talking in terms of your enjoyment of the series, the fidelity of what was seen or the overall sales and reception of the series?

And if you have to see only one of the controller or the case, you prefer to see the case? The thing that you don't hold for hours on end, the thing that just sits under the TV humming away? I would rather see both, but of the two the controller is the bigger deal for me. I'll buy a console because of what it plays like, not what it looks like.
