Who has bought a Wii U within the past week?

Got my Wii U in today. Gamepad feels good and I'm getting used to the menus. I have Nintendo Land(from system), Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3(free game from MK deal), New Super Mario Bros U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze(free from target), and Super Mario 3D Land.

Each of the games were $10 or so off through pricematching plus two target promos that reduced the prices further, so overall they cost around $120 for 5 games. Pretty happy with that. So $320-350 after tax for a new system plus 6 games is pretty awesome.

Overall i'm pretty estatic. Only had around an hour to mess with it when I picked it up this morning. Still need to go through more menus and whatnot to familiarize myself but I played a few levels of NSMBU and a match of MK8 and they were pretty great.

One thing I didn't think I'd like so much is just playing from the gamepad. Both Nintendo Land and NSMBU mirror the displays so I was looking down at it more than the TV. Really like how MK8 lets you switch by pressing the screen in the upper right.

Less touchscreen controls would be nice. I'm a little wary of scuffing up the screen and I'd rather not use a screen protector as there was aready a lot of particals from the package and I feel it would just be full of bubbles. Been mostly using my finger to touch so its okay. Kind of makes me paranoid as if I ended up messing the controller up I couldn't just go and buy another at the store.

Lots of random rambling. Cool system, excited to get back to it, still have tons of questions to figure out. My NNID is Exuro89 if anyone wants to add, let me know.

I didn't know where to put this and didn't want to create a new topic so mods didn't think I was advertising. I just wanted to say we have just been approved to develop for Nintendo platforms (Wii U and 3DS specifically). Although our first game will be released for the Wii U / Xbox One / PS4 / 3DS, we are really excited abotu working with the Wii U.
Looking forward to what you have planned.

Damn looking at the games i'm interested in and the all nintendo exclusive retaining their value thing is really messing with my 20GBP/30$ rule, how is LEGO City Undercover still almost full price a year after its release , not even talking about first party titles.

MK8 has totally got me back in love with my Wii U.

Bought Super Picross and Pullbox World (or whatever it's called) with my Digital Deluxe cash, started playing SM3DW which I'd put off after completing NSMBU. My God what a mistake, still not happy about how much of the presentation is taken straight from NSBM, but the level design is just genius as always, I don't know why I doubted it.

I have a question. I've asked it before in some thread but the answer I got wasn't very clear.

I keep getting a "data has finished installing" notification on my gamepad. Yeah this is normal. It's for a Pikmin 3 patch.

Thing is I don't have the disc to finalise installation.

If I delete it from the downloads, will it need to be downloaded again? Or has it actually finished installing the update and will finalise even if I delete it from the download manager list? Or does it hair delete the entry from the download manager and leave the installer file intact?

Unfit deletes the installer and I haven't finalised will it just automatically download again? If it doesn't, how do I manually update my Pikmin 3 when I get it back?

I guess I haut want to know how the download manager works with a patch that is "finished installing" but keeps promoting me, indicating it hasn't really finished.

I just bought one. Tropical Freeze and TW101 are my first priorities when it arrives :) I've held out for long enough. Totally taking advantage of the Target deals. I'm also really looking forward to playing the NES remix games and Pushmo World.

Got my refurbished unit in today, but I can't get past the Mii Maker during the system setup because the GamePad keeps freezing (though music keeps playing, I can't use the touch screen or buttons). Nothing on Nintendo's support site has worked so far, and their phone line is apparently too busy right now.

Any Gaffers had this problem and have any advice?

Edit: Lol, I got through to Nintendo support and the guy's just looking up stuff on their support site.

It will keep popping up until you start the game. It shouldn't download it again, if it does, you might have to switch off automatic downloading.

Make sure youre not too far away from the console. The gamepad doesnt have a huge range on it. Otherwise, i would call nintendo.

I'm sitting directly in front of the console. Anywho, I'm on the phone with Nintendo now, but I have the feeling I'm going to be sending this back.

Edit: Aaaaand I have to send everything back to Nintendo. I'll probably end up not even playing a single game until a month after I purchased the console lol.

Dammnit I accidentally created and linked a new Nintendo network ID to my wiiu thats different from my 3ds!

Is there anyway of unlinking it, if I factory reset it for example?

EDIT: NVM Crisis averted, didn't realize you could register multiple NNID's on one console, just linked my old nnid from my 3ds and deleted the other user--phew I thought the horrors of lack of 3ds/Wiiu id unification were about to hold true for a sec!

Anyways, YAY I own a Wiiu now!

Thanks. My questions was what happens if I delete it from the download manager? Does that actually delete the installer? Is it actually installed? The notification says "data has finished installing", but I haven't started the game, because I don't have the disc. Does it need to "finish installing" with the booting of the game?

What happens if I delete it from the download manager (to silence the notification) before I start the game? WIll it download again automatically, if so when? If not, how do you download it again?

Same thing happened to me, but I had a defective disk drive. I see these problems coming up more than usual lately. Makes me wonder who's manning Q&A.

so this thread's over a week old at this point, and i think we can surmise some sort of good will has been applied towards wii u and nintendo in general since mario kart 8 launched and e3 cemented their support of the console.

without trying to bring anyone down, i have to wonder why the sudden interest in the platform. the library may have a dozen or two good to great exclusive and multiplayer games, but support is still incredibly weak compared to the wii or gamecube, both of which earned a lot of ire while they were being supported.

regarding the gamecube, i think the system was too close to sega's demise, and here comes yet another new challenger in the form of microsoft to knock nintendo down yet another peg. in addition to seeming out of place with two non-video game companies, nintendo was still losing marketshare in the console division. they were increasingly irrelevant, but also outdated in the days of voice acting and cutscenes.

then consider the wii, which saw success primarily on bucking those trends. nintendo was often chastised for having abandoned the core gamer, when it was really the opposite that was true- metroid prime 3, super mario galaxy, twilight princess, fire emblem radiant dawn, and excite truck all hit within a year. nintendo brought back old series like donkey kong country, sin & punishment, wario land, and punch-out. they invested in new intellectual properties like disaster, xenoblade, and the last story (despite not supporting them across the world, unfortunately), and the platform itself was host to a variety of good and exclusive third-party games, some traditional and some not. but it's the stigma that nintendo had abandoned 'core gamers' despite this support that really stuck throughout the generation.

and most recently is the wii u. like the gamecube, the system is marching nintendo into irrelevance. like the gamecube, its most successful games buck the trends of the day. like the wii, it has a nontraditional controller, and it's an underpowered platform compared to the competition, with games made explicitly for a casual audience (wii sports, wii fit, and wii party all made it to the platform in some way or another within a year of launch). is it so far removed from the days of sega's demise as a first-party publisher that people give nintendo credit that they'll stick it out? was their e3 presence proof enough of that? or is it that the lineup seems quaint and novel in a good way - a relatively pleasant diversion from other anticipated and enjoyed libraries? is the platform's current standing in the market giving the perception that despite being weird compared to the competition, it's so far removed that it's not a threat to the status quo? maybe the people who would otherwise intensely dislike the platform don't care because it's so removed from the standings.

for me, i've enjoyed several games on the machine. like the vita, i wouldn't have bought one had i not expected to get a certain level of enjoyment out of the machine, or been aware of its future and library. and while i love super mario 3d world and new super luigi u, and i've enjoyed surprises such as pushmo world and nes remix, it's still the weakest nintendo platform i've owned. it's just interesting to see the perception shift.

I'm going to bite harder than Suarez on friday!

.

  • Mario Kart 8 is the superlative entry in a beloved series with well-executed online play
  • $200 NoA refurbished deluxe system is in impulse buy territory, especially if its a companion console to PS4/Xbox One
  • Free game selection includes 3 very well-regarded titles to build instant catalog
  • Deals like Buy 2 Get 1 at Target & $20 off Mario 3D and DKC Tropical Freeze at Best Buy the last couple weeks also help build library cheaply
  • Strongest E3 showing from Nintendo since '09 with plenty of marquee titles for 2015 (even if Zelda is 2016)
  • Although they'd be nice to have, does anyone REALLY care about Activision, EA, and Ubisoft titles?

can I make copies of saves from my wii on a sd card and then put them on the wiiU or is a system transfer required to move data between systems?

Without wanting to reopen the endless core/casuals definition debate, it's possible perception may have shifted slightly as to what a 'core gamer' is, with increased inclusiveness of Nintendo's style of games and perhaps a lowered tolerance of AAA cinematic experiences. Speaking for myself, I didn't really realise what we had with the Wii until about 2011 when I bought the Rainfall games and a few other gems and realised what I'd been missing while trudging (and I use that word deliberately) through the AAA library on the PS3. Prior to that I think I pretty much treated the Wii as a Nintendo box with the focus on the big hitters rather than the mid-tier, and did most of my gaming on the PS3 which seemed to me was where the core gamer was to be found (or 360, of course). It took me much longer than it should have done to realise I wasn't enjoying it much, and figure out why. Perhaps other people had a similar experience, and perhaps that view also held sway during the previous generations where whatever 'the core' were, they weren't really Nintendo.

On top of this we have a situation where development costs are spiralling, mid-tier has shot it, there are fewer AAA games coming out than ever, each with massively increased budgets that have to cater to the widest range of customers possible to make a profit and a whole mess of F2P and micro-transactions business models. It's a situation that's really only arisen in the HD era, and maybe Nintendo feels like a safe haven from all of that, the last place you can get gaming like you remember it from past generations. Couple that with the 'rediscovery' phenomenon I suggested above, and the fact that this E3 they absolutely nailed their presence, their message, and the way they interacted with the fanbase, and I can see how they could garner a whole load of goodwill without really doing anything that different.

Yeah that's Nintendo alright. Lots of Wii-games are only now going down in price, years after they have been released.

You can copy the saves to a SD card. But the wii transfer copies everything, including Wii shop points and downloaded (VC) games.

Mario Kart Bundle has been sold out everywhere here. Decided to stop in the land that time has forgotten - Kmart. Seeing as how they still sell a full priced Madden 08 I was expecting to only find a fully priced Mario Kart N64 bundle. But surprisingly they have 6 Mario Kart WiiU bundles so I grabbed one.

(repost of my post in download thread)
Getting my WiiU in Friday and first game I'll buy is Shovel Knight =)

Got $410 in eshop money ready to be spent... mario kart 8 w/ free pikmin 3, donkey kong, mario world, w101 and zelda HD for sure (mario u and luigi u in box). Also going to get Earthbound, after that I dunno.

I use to have a WiiU last year, but it got fried in an electrical thing and I never got around to rebuying it (long story, dont ask lol) and to be honest I didn't do much with it which I now regret. So pretty excited as I've missed so many great games, honestly I don't see myself even touching my ps4 till next year at this point and even then it's limited in what I want. Nintendo about to own me again, great times ahead!

well, bought Mario Kart Pack today. Welp, i had a Wii U 18 months ago and sold it. Guess what? Did a complete reset, but forgot to deregister my Nnid of it... and now i can not connect it with the new wii u.

Any one got experience with it? Specially with NoE?

I laughed at this, because that is true here in the town I live in too. I hoped to snag a discounted Zombi U or Wonderful 101. Instead I found full-priced white Wii U's, and three MK8 bundles that were pretty much sold out everywhere.

By the end of 2015, WiiU will have already a better library than Wii. The only things missing will be Metroid (Pikmin 3 and Bayonetta 2 largely compensate for that) and Mario Galaxy (SM3DW is almost equivalent). Moreover, they could appear before the end of WiiU life.
WiiU is likely to be my most played console in 2014 while I wait for PS4 or XBO to have enough interesting games out.

Nintendoland multiplayer
Pikmin 3
SM3DWorld
WWHD
Mario Kart 8
Bayonetta 2
Pullblox World
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Scram Kitty And His Buddy On Rails
DKC : Tropical Freeze
Guacamelee! STC Edition
Shovel Knight

At least 7 of those are or will be instant classics IMO. It's more than enough to justify a console.

This post hits the nail on the head for me. Sums up my feelings on every issue touched upon to a tee and the new found gaming lease of life through my own recent rediscovery of Nintendo.

Except that I turned my nose up at the Wii altogether at the time so are now having to go back and make up for what I missed out on.

Got my MK8 Bundle last weekend. It's been a lot of FUN.

The only thing that really sucks is that to get your free game you have to register your WiiU console. Since I'm from Mexico I couldn't get that promo :c

As much as i love the Wii u line up and games i played. It still sadly is nowhere near wii quality. Wii is my favorite console only 1upped by the DS. Wii umissing the great 3rd party support. But all those games you listed except for maybe donkey kong are all amazing.

So I've been a Wii U owner for the past 9 days or so. I bought it used from someone who got it 10 months ago, and her reason for selling it was that see didn't use it anymore.

Everything went great. Setup, updates, everthing, up until I booted up a game for the first time, which was Mario Kart 8. Console freeze! The console have a tendency of freezing 2-3 times every day, but it never locks up while I play games though. The console decides to freeze with the transition between menus, e.g. game -> system menu or system menu -> system settings. Another thing that happens when the console locks up is that the TV loses video connection the console and the TV greets me with a "No signal" message, the gamepad also loses connection to the console 5 minutes or so after the freeze.

So I decided to contact Bergsala via e-mail, and did my best explaining the problems I have experienced and the answer I got was. "Hello! Looking at the details you have given us, it seems like there could be a problem with the motherboard. If that is the case, I wouldn't recommend sending the console in for a repair."

I'm speechless. I didn't know how to respond, and I still don't. Thankfully, the person that sold me the console still had the receipt, so I'll head to town in the near future and hopefully get it replaced.

So if I'm not mistaken the NNID is tied to the console, right? Is there something I could do with that or do I have to contact Bergsala again?
Sometimes I just hate this company.

i don't think so. wii u is severely lacking in most genres, where the wii was well-represented across the board. even counting wii u download games, i don't think it stands up to what the wii had at retail and through wiiware. of course, when you throw vc into the mix, it's far more apparent which has the more robust lineup between the two.

Glad it resonated with you, though it's based almost entirely on gut feeling! You've got a hell of a good time ahead of you if you skipped the Wii completely (and that may also contribute to the current wave of goodwill - the discovery that the machine is backwards compatible with the secret best library of last gen). If you like distinctly Japanese oddball action adventures with RPG elements, do not miss Pandora's Tower.

I have a question for the thread. I'm looking to purchase a Wii U sometime in July.

There are many people in the F/S thread who are selling Download Codes for one of the four free games. I am able to go ahead and purchase 2-3 download codes now and then just save to redeem them once I get my system?

Is there a time frame in which you must redeem the online codes?

The promotion lasts until July 31st. I'm not sure how the codes work, but they should be good to then.

In Europe at least the code is good until the end of September. The code must be generated before the end of August, and MK registered by the end of July.

The download code can be used to download the chosen game from Nintendo eShop to any Wii U console**. The download code expires on September 30th 2014, 22:59 (UK time).

Buying MK8 digitally will just auto attach my game to my club nintendo account if they're linked and give me my free game choice right?

I guess I haut want to know how the download manager works with a patch that is "finished installing" but keeps promoting me, indicating it hasn't really finished.

I have been wondering the same since launch :D However so far I've just kept deleting the files when it said "download has finished installing", but I'm not even sure what that does..
I guess theoretically it's easy to find out... if I had my Pikmin 3 game cd here I could try deleting the download notification and then launch the game afterwards to see if I got the new touch controls..

Buying MK8 digitally will just auto attach my game to my club nintendo account if they're linked and give me my free game choice right?

If you buy digitally you will get a special activation code that you can find on the "recently purchased" page in the eshop. You need to enter that code on the club nintendo website and that'll give you the free game download code.

Joining the wii u club!!! Got mine today with...

So in Australia it's $179 at Kmart for the sky landers basic bundle which includes Nintendo land. Seems like there is an unofficial price drop of about $100 on the wii u basic. The premium is still $429 with mario kart. Considering mario kart can be had for an extra $58 stand alone it's a no brainer to get the basic. I also picked up mario 3D world and tropical freeze. I was just going to get kart and tropical freeze but what the hell, what's an extra $58 for something I'll get down the line anyway plus Nintendo games hardly ever get price drops. I will get new super mario bros u for the free download as that was probably my favourite game on the wii. So wii u plus 5 games for $350ish dollars is a great deal. Actually this year I was going to get a 3DS XL instead but I can't ignore this. Plus e3 has me really excited for next year.

I agree with a few of the posters above. Seems the only triple A games that are left are stuff from the big publishers and a lot of te games tend to be dumb downed in terms of gameplay mechanics. Also There's not really anything on the other systems coming out this year. I'll get Driveclub but that's probably about it. I feel like it's always better to wait on Nintendo systems and then buy it all in one go.

Just received mine, yay.

But um... setting it up now, do I seriously need to create a new (dummy) user in order to run the system update in order to be able to import my NNID user? If I try to use my NNID, it says I need to do a system update, and it sends me back to the create user/use existing menu. -_-

That part is really un-intuitive but you should be able to go into the "create new NNID" and then there should be an option to do it later.
