Who here really plays the Kirby Series?

I used to love the platforming games, but either it's because I've aged and the games keep getting geared towards younger and younger kids, or it's because the recent portable versions have been so lackluster, I've found myself losing interest.

Dream Land 2 is still my personal fave in the series.

I'm a pretty huge kirby fan. [...] I don't know why Nintendo is so hesitant to bring another Kirby platformer to a home console, but you better believe I'll get it day one.
In fairness, Kirby's Adventure didn't come out on NES until well after the SNES was released (1993), Kirby Super Star was a late-life SNES game (1996), Kirby's Dream Land 3 didn't come out on SNES until well after the N64 was released (1998), and Kirby 64 was a late-life N64 game (2000), so Kirby being late to the party on home consoles isn't that rare.

It's still been too long, though, definitely. :( And as A Link to the Snitch and HK-47 kind of pointed out, it's not like Kirby is some minor, under-the-radar series that the Nintendo of today wouldn't want to bother with--the games sell millions and Nintendo should have every reason to want to make one and keep Kirby alive in the eyes of those who (for some reason) don't have a DS.

Well I can tell you that I loves me some Kirby. Unlike most though, I started off with two of the black sheep titles, namely Kirby 64 & Dream Land 3. They were solid games to me and prompted me to start keeping an eye out for the other games. Then Canvas Curse came out and I was fucking hooked. Why the hell hasn't there been a second Canvas Curse or something that creative yet, I have no idea.

Much later, I would find out about Kirby's Adventure/Nightmare In Dreamland through VC & Kirby Super Star through the insane praise and hype for KSSU. These two games are really something amazing though.

I've played a few Kirby games and I generally like them, but I'm not in love with them. I mainly play them when I have nothing better to play.

I've picked up most of the games as they've come out, but I don't really get very excited for them. They're just far too easy and slow-paced for my liking. Canvas Curse was fucking bad-ass, I wish we'd get a sequel to that.

fps are awesome for the multiplayer aspect, hence it's talked about much longer than any single player experience

kirby's single player is always awesome but ... the experience doesn't last as long as a good multiplayer fps will (and i do blame how most kirby games last ike only 4 hours... come on! bump the difficulty levels HAL - u can do it!)

I love the series, played most of the platformers (Kirby's Adventure was actually the second game I ever played, SMB3 being the first). Played all the GBA and DS installments (favourite being Nightmare in Dreamland and Canvas Curse). The music's great, animation is really smooth and detailed and the best thing about the series is how short most of the levels are, just perfect for portable gaming. That said, I really don't like Dream Land and as a result never played Dream Land 2 and 3.

The main reason is that HAL hasn't made a new Kirby game since Canvas Curse. Squeak Squad was done by Flagship, and Super Star Ultra only had like 30 minutes of new stuff at best.
Flagship's been involved in every handheld Kirby since Nightmare in Dream Land. Including Canvas Curse.

The first one they didn't have a hand in technically was Super Star Ultra, but only because Capcom had shut them down by then... and most of the relevant Flagship guys actually joined HAL anyway. Also, Natsume and Intelligent Systems have actually been contributing to the various Kirby games behind the scenes (Squeek Squad & Amazing Mirror especially).

The only Kirby game I owned was the very first one on the Gameboy. It was the bane of my young existence, so damn hard. I rented Kirby's Adventure, and loved it, but beat it without trouble in an afternoon. After that, I went to only owning the Genny, and Kirby just sort of fell off my gaming map. I always mean to go back and pick up the ones I missed, but I never do.

Still love the puffball though. The goofy bastard that he is.

I dont know half way through level 3 I started dying. I think I have died in Squeak twenty times now. Half the time if I had the right power it would not have happened but still. Lack of platformers all these years have made me rusty I guess.

I really buy them. I rarely play them, however. :/
When I get my 2D platformer itch, I usually restart YI, SMW, or SMB3.

I play all the Kirby games. But Kirby's problem is that it's like, the world's most mediocre well-crafted series. Each game is polished to a sheen, well designed, and satisfiying but they refuse to stretch their legs.

Now, Kirby's Canvas Curse was the one breakout game of the series and remains IMHO the finest action game with the Kirby name on it so far. It /is/ an exceptional, AAA game that reaches for the stars and mostly achieves it.
This. Doesn't help that it's also too easy.

Kirby games are very cool. As others have mentioned, I sometimes get a feeling of "seen this before" when I played a couple of the newer ones.
The last one I was really excited about was canvas curse. I played the hell out of that game! I loved how different the gameplay was while maintaining the great atmosphere that Kirby games have.

Kirby Superstar Ultra has co-op and is awesome.

Squeak Squad was unmemorable and I traded it in.

Canvas Curse is one of my favorite platformer and one of my favorite DS stylus games.

If you love Squeak Squad then you need to run, right now, to buy Kirby Super Star Ultra on DS. I really do like Squeak Squad a lot, honestly: it's a good A- or so to me, though I know I like it much more than some of the other diehard Kirby fans in here. (I speak with Drkirby and Iam Canadian on pretty much a nightly basis in IRC, for example. [server: irc.globalgamers.net ; channel: #gaf_wfc])

It's not that I dislike Squeak Squad, because I don't. There's really nothing that's technically wrong with the game, other than the often-too-short levels. There's just something about Squeak Squad that's just so utterly forgettable. As a matter of fact, as I said in the IRC once, that may be a positive aspect since it's like a new experience every time you play it. :D

Also, nice shilling, Jigs. :P

I really Kirby on the NES, too bad they never improved the series or expended beyond the first game. Canvas Curse is awesome but then again, they came back with a shitty NES remake, Kirby is dead to me. I can eat Megaman sequels or "yet another FPS" because those games have some sort of challenge, the Kirby games not only didn't evolve at all, but they're easy as hell and have little replay value (they're still fun, because the foundation is solid, and the controls are always nice, but you could say that about any good platform game). It's such a waste of a series :(

Because I only had a Game Boy and a Sega Master System, Kirby is the only Nintendo franchise that I associate with my youth... and I still think the modern games are awesome.

Canvas Curse is still one of my favourite DS games.

I bought Canvas Curse and really, really liked that game. It's probably my favorite DS game that I own, in fact, and still gets popped in from time to time.

On the strength of my liking of Canvas Curse, I bought and really enjoyed Kirby's Adventure on Virtual Console.

I bought Kirby's Dream Land 3 on Virtual Console, but have not, as of yet, started to play it.

I bought Kirby Super Star Ultra on the cheap, and I'm sorry to say that I got really bored with it and sold it to break even. I didn't get very far, and I plan on revisiting it someday, but it really didn't grab me after 3 of the 8 (9?) "minigames".

I think what really hurts the Kirby games in the long run is that:
1. They're all really easy, easy enough that they are supposed to be accessible to young children.
2. They all have very similar structure, so far as if you've played and own one, there's really not an overwhelming reason to need another one unless you really like the series. Apart from Canvas Curse and some new abilities, the core series hasn't evolved much in almost twenty years.

You really need to play it for about 60 hours before it clicks and you "get" it.
No, it clicks after about 2 hours I think, you just then spend 60 hours playing it.

I really hope there is a Wii Rerelease with Wifi added.

Lots of people citing the lack of difficulty for not enjoying Kirby that much.

I don't know, normally games being too easy even on a first run bothers me as well (nearly any 2D game eventually becomes easy with enough practice, so the first playthrough is where I really look at difficulty), but in Kirby it doesn't matter much to me--I just challenge myself to do better than I did before, which is often good enough, and whenever boss rush modes are arouind I'll usually play them a lot and try to go through with different powers. Best part of Kirby Super Star to me was the Arena just for that reason.

Not too big into the series, but I am currently playing Super Star Ultra (beat a few of the games) and it's awesome. Extremely responsive play control and great aesthetics. Canvas Curse was also a great game, one of the best uses for the DS stylus, unfortunately the game was over just as soon as the difficulty started to ramp up. I guess my biggest problem with the series is that they are a bit too easy... I mean they don't have to be MM9 hard, but sometimes, you know, you want a bit more challenge.

Want to add a bit of chalange to Kirby's Adventure/Knightmare in Dreamland? Beat it without using the copy power. Want more? Do it during extra mode with half life? Tad more maybe? Get the max precent completed, which I think was 89%.

Side rules are since Metaknight has to be fought with the sword, toss it away after you beat him, and the Star Rod part if fought normally.

Well as you know, most small children don't know how to post on GAF.

With that said I love the Kirby games. Started with Dreamland 2 which I still love (Rick!), then downloaded Adventure from the VC and thought it was quite good, and finally played SSU a few months ago and was blown away... by the graphics. I think I'm starting to get sick of all the recycled enemies and stage archetypes, though. I hope Kirby Wii mixes things up.

First time I played a Kirby game was in the 90s on my brother's Game Boy. I really liked it and have played many games since then. But I only ended up buying a Kirby game when I got the DS and that was Canvas Curse, than Squeak Squad, and most recently Super Star Ultra. I also downloaded Kirby's Adventure, Kirby 64, and Kirby's Dreamland on the Virtual Console. So yes I am a Kirby fan, but have never really played the spinoffs.

I almost got Nightmare In Dreamland on GBA but my grandpa couldn't find it back then. I had no idea it was a remake of Kirby's Adventure because I had never played that game before.

Hopefully Kirby Wii comes to fruition, but I'm not getting my hopes up this time around!

I do like most of the Kirby games and i get them pretty close to their release.
You usually get what you expect from these kinds of games, so no reason to make a fuss.
Anybody interested in pictures of my 7 Kirby plushies?

I'm a big Kirby fan too. Although, I have not played Air Ride, Squeak Squad or Amazing Mirror.

I've played Dream Land, Kirby's Adventure, Dream Land 2, Dreamland 3, Superstar, Crystal Shards, Dream Course, Tilt n' Tumble, Canvas Curse and Avalanche.

Superstar, Canvas Curse and Tilt n' Tumble are my favorites.
