My copy just shipped from Amazon.ca. Has anyone gone through the process of a clean install from the upgrade media yet? How smooth did it go?

Yes, i had vista, got a copy of Windows 7 through MSDNAA and the clean install went really smooth.

Windows 7 Student deal is now up for other locations outside US.. Canada confirmed.

http://ms.bluehornet.com/surveys/submit_my_school/en_us

Just follow through the questionnaire and submit your email address. I can confirm that my Canadian university address was verified (@mun.ca).

Stealth EDIT: I only see the Office deal so far.. but at least we'll be ready for later.. Hopefully this goes live at midnight. Sorry guys.

I get a free upgrade but I haven't read anything about it. Is it available at midnight tonight to download?

Right, just ordered the Windows7 Professional 64 bit upgrade version through the student deal thing. But now I'm all worried whether it would even install.

I currently have Vista Ultimate on my system, and I have just ran the 'Upgrade Advisor' and all it states is that I can upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.

I want to ideally reformat my system and do a fresh install with the Windows 7 Pro 64 bit that I ordered??!! Urggh.

Anyone else have problems getting a response email from 741? I am a student and put in my email yesterday and had them try and resend it today and still, nothing. Not in any spam folders or anything and it is a .edu address. Do they not send anything until tomorrow? Just wondering

Edit. Nevermind it finally went through

You can if you do a fresh install.

Cheers. Sorry as well, as just realised this has already been talked about at the end of the previous page..............just I'd expect the upgrade advisor to actually give more info as to 'all options' and not just something that puts doubt into my mind as to whether the version I purchased would work.

If you have a free upgrade from purchasing a computer I believe you have to wait for the disc to be shipped to you, I'm not sure they're offering downloads for that promotion, though it seems that would make more sense.

As an OS noob, I have but one question:
Why do people get so excited about new operating systems? What's the benefits here? I'm currently running Windows XP like I have been since the rapid demise of the short lived Windows ME. :lol

I was excited to install it right away, but then realized I haven't finished Batman AA yet. I don't want to deal with the possibility of losing my game save, and I'm fine with Vista x64 for now, so I'll wait just a bit longer.

It's a vastly upgraded and superior to what we're using at the moment?

Why don't you just back up your game saves? Worked for my in-progress games from Civ-IV...

Waiting for my Windows 7 upgrade disc to arrive. Can't wait!

Just a question on installation--

Can I boot from disc and do a reformat + clean install like I've done with Vista/XP before? Or is there some sort of verification that need to take place.

None of the reasons would really impress you if you have to ask...it's just a lifestyle. The people who are typically excited for these transitions are usually power users who spend 6-8 hours per day at the computer.

Changes that would seem inconsequential or unnoticeable to some can be a huge deal to us because we're so intimately familiar with the inner workings of these systems.

That's the 'It's Not Cheating' program. It's always been for selling Office 2007 for students. You sure Windows 7 will turn up there?

Do you have any links detailing the deal we're apparently getting in Canada? I've heard a few people mention it before but I haven't seen any kind of official announcement.

And how long do these e-mails typically take to go out? I signed up for the one on that other site before I knew it was US only and Microsoft never actually sent me a reply. I hope I don't have to wait weeks just to get a response this time.

"Protect your purchase with Extended Download Service for only $5.95. We will keep a back-up copy of your digital file should you need to re-download it for any reason."

What does this mean? You can only download it once?
edit: nm u can download it unlimited for 30 days. I assume u can put it on a DVD after that? :/

Jesus, I feel kinda jealous. I've been running win7 as my default OS since the second beta phase. I wish I could have this same excitement. :/

You guys are going to love it

I've used Windows 7 at work, and frequently shift between it and Vista and XP. Definitely a major improvement. It is as fast as XP (I switch between OSes on the same box, so the comparison isn't apples/oranges), visually better than Vista and XP, and far far less annoying than Vista, and even a little less annoying than XP. I'll be building a Windows 7 system next year to replace my 6 year old XP box.

got today, with a 64gb SSD,

I got a Home upgrade for my laptop and a Pro Full for my desktop.

Anyone done a clean install with the upgrade disc?

Got my upgrade option from buying Windows Vista recently, it says it's shipping on the 22nd, was hoping to receive it by then so I could finally go back to the awesomeness.

Going back to Vista from the W7 RC was so painful

Edit : Just saw that it's been shipped already, but can't track the package cause of maintenance that's supposed to happen on Sunday :lol

It goes through your school for that deal? I figured it would just send a link to your email...
Nope, my school has volume licensing. We just have to go on some website and download it. Don't need to actually receive a license. it contacts a server or something.

Is that something all schools will be doing or is your school special?

Hmm, I think Volume Licensing is only for Enterprise (and maybe Ultimate.) I'm not sure what other schools do, but judging from the thread, a lot of schools use MDSNAA or wtv that's called.

My school isn't in that MDSNAA, or whatever, deal. Hmm, I guess I'll just have to wait until midnight (in about 45 minutes) and see...

Anyone who got it with win741 get a download link in their email? :<

ALso, I am on win7 now, how is this going to work? Is there any way I can just use the key to activate it without reinstalling the whole thing?

Also.. oh Hi DM btw.. it says upgrade on the box and when you click through, but it's confirmed through Digital River that it is a full retail version (TomsHardware Forums/Redflagdeals) on the US site anyway. I'm going to Guinea Pig the Canadian Professional edition.
