Who is NOT buying a Wii U?

I remember standing in line on release day for Brawl, and spending the entire next day playing through it. I barely ever played it after that day. : /

Luckily I was going to College the next year, and I didn't give two craps about the Wii hardware itself, so I left the Wii out on our freshman dorm lounge with Smash Bros and Double Dash. It got a lot of drunk play at midnight that year. Since then, it's probably gotten used for about 20-30 hours (90% of which was my roommates the following years)

I'm going to wait this time around...

I have this feeling that it will be, obviously, much better than the Wii but not as next gen as its competitors new consoles.

I wish them the best.

Not day 1, but I'll likely get one eventually. But I guess that depends how the inevitable Zelda looks. WW, TP, and SS all kinda let me down, but I'm still optimistic for the next one. If there's a Wii U Fire Emblem, then I'm instantly going out and buying one.

No. not into Nintendo's first party output. at all, never owned a Nintendo console, probably never will as long as they play it as safe as they've been playing it.

The WiiU actually make me wish to try to build a PC Gaming Machine. But I'm a total noob in PC gaming.

Off-topic but it's not too hard. The PC I have now I built myself a few years ago from separate parts from Newegg and it was the first time putting one together and it worked on the first try and has run flawlessly ever since. As for actual gaming being hard, you can use the 360 controller for most big games. The talk of constant driver updates and lots of errors and problems is mostly overblown.

Not I, said the fly.

Why? Well mainly the price- Nintendo is finally doing current HD, admittedly the system is like more powerful than PS360, but you are not going to see those advantages for some time it seems. I can't really justify the price for the package. That damn controller, which Im indifferent about really ran the price up it seems. Also, the exclusive games really aren't grabbing me. They look good, just not 300-350 good. New Super Mario Bros U looks so... I dunno, safe, underwhelming. Rayman Legends is the biggest title for me, but once again I cannot justify spending the cash for one or two games.

Also, it remains to be be seen how well supported DLC, apps, games, demos, online etc will be with the Wii-U. I foresee myself jumping in on the system after a pricedrop or more killer apps in over a year or so.

'playing it safe' is not what i would call nintendo's approach with the DS, Wii, WiiU. All three of these systems went against everything before them in terms of hardware progression, generations, and third party expectations. Underpowered relative to competition sure, but hardly safe.
3DS maybe. If WiiU did not have the tablet, then it would definitely be safe as it seems to rely on Wii franchises and other past successes.

Nintendo's output is quite diverse. you should probably pickup a wii on the cheap and play some GC, Wii, and VC classics. Unless you only play simulation games and traditional fighters, there is probably something for you.

I'm not hyped for Wii U. Online feels like it will still not be up to par and no killer apps for me yet.

Will mainly depend on the games it gets. So far I only want Bayonetta 2, which isn't nearly enough. Maybe after it's been out some years and have dropped in price and gotten a decent amount of games I really want to play.

The console itself just seems very boring to me. Looking at the graphics of the games they have shown so far, it looks to be another wii in terms of hardware capabilites.

The controller aspect of the console also doesn't interest me at all, seems like another nintendo gimmick without any real potential for interesting stuff to do. My guess is that it will be used like the second screen on the 3ds/ds in the vast majority of games. Especially multiplatform games.

I dont have any interest in buying one, i havent seen a Fire Emblem or other game that make me really want to have one, also probably some friend will lend me one after they get bore with their just like what happen with the Wii. My last Nintendo home console was the Gamecube, i still think it sucks compared with the consoles of their gen but Rogue Leader, Fire Emblem and Metroid were simply awesome.

The WiiU is an upgrade for Nintendo fans, whom had to game on SD consoles in an HD era for the past 6 years. If they didn't own another console or a PC for their gaming as well, I can see why the WiiU looks attractive. But for the rest of us, the U is more of a step to the side instead of forward. Batman, Darksiders 2, and other already released current Gen games are on the docket for the "new" system. Millions of us have already played and beaten such games.

For me the WiiU is just there. There is little to be excited about since I can already play similar looking games on systems I already own. And I think multi platform support is already doomed since Nintendo did little to future proof against the impending death of the current generation....a generation Nintendo is just being born into.

Only time will tell but I wish Nintendo had taken a bit more of a chance instead of just another controller change-up for the second Gen in a row coupled with weaker hardware.

I bought a Wii when it first was released. I played a bunch of Wii Sports on it since that's what everyone wanted to play as soon as they had seen it.

I didn't use it much at all and then sold it. I then bought a second one for Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Taiko Drum Master that I ended up importing. I played those games regularly for a few months then lost interest since there was no real other titles that I wanted to play.

I sold my second one and haven't looked back.

I heard the price and checked Best Buy to see what the pre orders were looking like. I couldn't find a launch game that I'm willing to shell out money for.

I'll sit on the sidelines for a while to see what the game situation is looking like (or when Bayonetta 2 is released).

Nah, I bought a Wii and sold it because it never got used. I just don't like Nintendo games anymore. They seem so stale and I feel like they haven't changed much since I was a kid.

Plus it seems a bit over priced for the tech they are offering. I will just wait for PS4/XboxWhatever. The WiiU is getting ports of current gen games, but I am afraid Nintendo may be left out of the picture again once nextgen starts and their system is too under powered to port games to, like what happened to the Wii.

I'm not buying one at launch because I don't like any of the major Nintendo franchises and I don't have a spare HDMI port. But I am interested in getting one next year when more details anout third party support come out.

I want to state again that I'm expecting these late ports to sell very poorly.

Rationale being that I see the primary audience for these releases as people who held out the past years with only owning a Wii. But this group by definition has a proven unwillingness to spend a couple hundred dollars to get access to these games. And the Wii U entry price is even higher.

Basically, a flow chart:
If you want Batman AC badly enough to purchase it,
AND you already have another HD console
=> you either already HAVE purchased it, or you can get it cheaper than the Wii U version.

If you want Batman AC badly enough to purchase it,
AND you have remained a Wii-only user so far
=> it wasn't attractive enough to you to warrant a system purchase; why would that change now?

So I was a Nintendo guy from N64 to Gamecube and then I started branching out. Now I'm primarily a PC gamer and am probably not going to get either the 720/ps4 because of that. Nintendo can win me back, but it would take a few first party releases to justify the money.

What I really like Nintendo for local multiplayer. A first gen Wii is like the ultimate multiplayer machine. Does anyone know if it might be possible to hack the Wii to support Wii U Pro controller? Not very easy to find Wavebirds anymore.

If nintendo made local multiplayer a focus with the Wii U I'd be way more likely to buy one. Luckily the wii u pad should lead them down that path.

I'll buy one when the following games are out:

1. a Mario game that takes the series forward like Galaxy did. The off-shoots and NSMB doesn't count.
2. Zelda
3. Bayonetta 2
4. Monolith's next game

I won't be buying anywhere close to launch. Nintendo has burnt me with that too many times. I'll get it when the price is reduced and a couple of the four games mentioned are cheaper to pick up. Then I'll grab the other essentials, burn through the Wii U's library in about half a year, and be done with it.

I'm buying about 5 for EBAY purposes but I'm not keeping any.

I've yet to see a game that I would even have a passing interest in, and I think selling 8 year old hardware for that price is insulting.

At this point I think the WIIU will be the first console in my life that I don't own for myself.

Not at launch. I think Nintendo makes great games, but they aren't for me. Bayonetta 2 is tempting, but I'll need more than one game to get me to buy the system.

NOt buying a Wii U because the only games i want :
-bayo 2
-zelda
-galaxy U

are nowhere to be seen in 2013 and by that time there will be a price drop.
no point for me to buy a console when i don't have games i want on it released

=> it wasn't attractive enough to you to warrant a system purchase; why would that change now?
The ARMOR !! the armor changes everything ( /*sarcasm*/)

It's hard to imagine buying any next gen consoles with the PC getting so many more ports at the moment. I was mostly a Gamecube person but never quite bought a Wii.

I'm as big a Nintendo fan as they come, but I'm gonna hold out a bit on the Wii U. Not because I have any doubts in it, I'm just going to wait for software that I really need to play.

After buying the 3DS at launch and not really having much to play for a good while (not the case anymore), I've learnt not to do that again.

The price and system specs are all great to me. I'm just not completely sold on any of the launch titles. Once it gets bolstered by some other first party titles I'll be jumping on board. It might take SMG3 for me to lay down my hard earned though.

It saddens me to see that way too many people think that every Nintendo console's sole purpose is to have only Nintendo games played on it.
Have you ever thought about, I dunno, 3rd party titles?

So many people just say "I wait for Mario/Zelda/*Nintendo IP* before I buy it".
Do you wait for God of War or Uncharted to buy the PS4?
Or do you wait for Halo or Gears of War to buy the next Xbox?

This "waiting for the 1st party titles" argument is getting so old.

Was deeply, deeply disappointed with the Wii after getting hyped up about it, so I'm probably not going to buy another Nintendo console again. The Wii U doesn't have the technology angle to get me interested and so far they haven't shown games that would make me run out and buy it. Also the controller doesn't interest me in the slightest. Low res, capacitive touch screen? No thank you very much.

Rule one is that I won't buy a system if it's not at a point where I can walk in and buy it without worrying about supply issues because creating the impression of scarcity is basic psychological manipulation.

(I also avoid grocery shopping when I'm hungry.)

I'm sure I will get one eventually. I want to play Mario and Rayman but not enough to pay full price for them and buy a new console on top of it.

So many people just say "I wait for Mario/Zelda/*Nintendo IP* before I buy it".
Do you wait for God of War or Uncharted to buy the PS4?
Or do you wait for Halo or Gears of War to buy the next Xbox?
To answer your questions, yes. I have the PC for everything else. Consoles are strictly exclusive machines for me.

Err, yes? Is that a problem? Maybe 7 years ago I wouldn't have but I'm over 20 now and have to pay with my own money that I could be spending on other things.

No upscaling is disappointing.
$350 for 32gb n what should b a pack in game is disappointing.
No bluray/dvd playback is disappointing.
Launch/first gen games usually are not up to snuff
ie. rush jobs.
A Holiday 2013 price cut to combat the other 2 console launches seems like a good reason to wait.

No because I trust that the next xbox/ps4 will continue to get quality 3rd party ports/games more than a year or 2 after launch, and the same would shock me for the wiiU.

It's the "waiting for shit worth playing" argument, FYI.

Nintendo also needs to prove that 3rd parties will give a shit about the Wii U before anyone is going to buy it for anything but 3rd party exclusives.

What kind of idiot buys a Nintendo system on the verge of being outdated technically for 3rd party titles? Its not like the 3rd parties will stick around the second the next Xbox and Playstation launch.

As always, the only real advantage Nintendo has is their first party studios. It is a powerful advantage, but anyone paying attention has no need to buy a Nintendo system until those first party games are delivered.

i bought the wii and hardly touched it. couple of months later it went up on ebay. Won't make that mistake again.

it basically comes down to this for me. i wouldn't have bought a wii without nintendo titles but with them it's probably my favorite console this gen.

i don't like most triple A games anyway and if i do i play them on a PC. Nintendo platform is for Nintendo games and that is good enough for me.

Nintendo Wii (84% of my games are made by nintendo)
Nintendo DS (75% of my games are made by nintendo)
Nintendo 3DS (100% of my games are made by nintendo)

i don't expect the Wii U to be different.

While I'm waiting for first party title on other consoles, I'm awash in a sea of top tier third party titles. Unfortunately that never seems to occur on Nintendo consoles.

Since the SNES, there hasn't been a Nintendo console worth buying on the back of third party titles. I say this despite having about 50 third-party titles on my Wii.

In this generation, we have the added benefit of the fact that a huge, huge, huge swath of GAF already has a PS3, a 360, a gaming PC, or more than one of the aforementioned. So if third-party titles are multiplatform, they have the option to play them without additional hardware investment, at higher resolutions/framerates/IQ, or both in some cases. That's not to say Wii U won't end up with some great third-party titles, of course it will. But it's not like it's going to open a new world for a lot of people.

I am not buying one, since I was very disappointed with my last (and only) nintendo console, the wii. I don't think nintendo has any exclusived that really matter to me and for multiplats, I'll stick to my PS3 since it's a comfy console that provides me with everything my gamer-me needs.

Not buying a Wii U because it's expensive, it doesn't have enough games I want yet and I don't have room for a motion-control console (my room is 3.1 metres by 3.1 metres and my monitor is only 24 inch). Also I only just bought a PS3, so there's plenty of games I plan to get for that before I'll consider another new console.

Just like the Wii, I will wait until Smash Bros comes out. Unlike the Wii though, I'm also going to wait for it to drop to at least $199 before I pick it up. If that's never then fine, but that's how I feel after being burned by the Wii.

1. Since when did upscaling become the requirement for BC? PS3s PS2 upscaling was just a smoothing filter, pretty much achieved on any TV by setting the sharpness to 0, and then they removed it from "wave 2" units. On 360 we had to wait and pray for them to add the games we wanted.. remember that?? And the list was different in each region. At least Wii U has 100% BC, which means that you can sell your Wii and keep all your Wii games. Isn't that the point of backwards compatibility? (And the HDMI output will atleast enhance black level, sharpness and contrast.)

2. You're not paying for just the GBs.. You pay $50 extra for: a $60 game, charging cradle+stand (guessing $15 retail value for this), the Premium service.. You'll be insane to go for the Basic set. And why SHOULD Nintendoland be free? The competition doesn't do it, why should Nintendo?

3. Valid argument if you don't already have a BD-player. If they get HD-streaming services for Europe, with a better selection than Zune I would be happy. I watch far too many movies to buy physical discs anyway, and I'm not a download-pirate so digital rentals have saved me.

4. So, you're using past console releases against Wii U, which seem to have the most solid and "up to snuff" line up of any console, both in exclusives and enhanced ports, only lacking the revolutionary flagship title like Super Mario 64 for N64 or Halo CE for Xbox.

5. You don't know if the other consoles will be ready to launch holiday 2013, you don't know which price they'll be or which games they'll have. Nintendo could have the most epic holiday line-up ever for all you know.. Super Mario Universe, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy VII HD, Wii Sports U, Super Smash Bros., Timesplitters 4. A price cut won't be neccessary if they have the one must-have game, because even at $349 they will be the cheapest alternative of the new generation. (They'll probably start to push dual GamePad games at that point, and Sony will be supporting PS3 at least until holiday 2014, with a tail reaching well into 2016.)

Umm, actually all of his arguments are valid. It's entirely personal opinion.

Your Nintendo damage control won't work well in this thread, unfortunately.

Just providing positive against negative. I'm there day 1, feeling sorry for the rest. All new consoles (at least from the big companies) are must-buys day 1 for me. Having to play catch-up on a whole year or more of releases - just when two more consoles are releasing must be a pain.

I am biting my knuckles not to order one. There is nothing really compelling in the launch lineup and I think the pad looks really cheap, but I am very very afraid that when I see that 1080P Mario goodness on a big screen and hear that orchestra Mariotheme through a good speaker set I will just break down like a baby and order one. Must. Resist.
