It's really tough to pick one, as each does their own thing. Without looking at my collection, or doing any other research, these are the names that come to me off the top of my head:

Paul Verhoeven
John Carpenter
Yoshihiro Nishimura
Sion Sono
Shinya Tsukamoto
Brian De Palma
Quentin Tarantino
Russ Meyer
Dario Argento
Paul WS Anderson
Zack Snyder
George Lucas

I'm sure I'm forgetting some greats, but I can watch pretty much any film by these guys and find something of interest.

Top Tier

John Carpenter
Martin Scorsese
Alfred Hitchcock
The Coen Brothers
Steven Spielberg
Sergio Leone

The Shortlist (These are director's that are close to getting into my top tier list, I just need to see a few more of their films. I also taking my time on watching these films, giving them time to stew in my head)

Akira Kurosawa
Roman Polanski
David Cronenberg
Ingmar Bergman
Billy Wilder
David Lynch
Stanley Kubrick

I can't name a favorite one. I can't!

Kurosawa
Kubrick
Tarantino
Fincher
Miyazaki
Scorsese

I guess those would be my #1

Coen Bros
Spielberg
Mann
Refn

Those would be my #2

Satoshi Kon and Bong Joon-Ho's films really speak to me which probably place them as my faves, even if other directors may have more films I've enjoyed in their works. Kon's exploration of reality and identity within the animated medium and Bong's cinematography combined with his memorable characters put them above in terms of preference.

There is only two directors that i go to see every movie regardless of reviews. The first is Tarantino, has to have one if not the best track record of amazing movies. And the second is David Fincher, love the dark mysteries movies that he makes.

Jim jarmusch, especially after only lovers left alive and Paterson. Then there are in no particular order: Fincher, coen brothers, lynch, Danny Boyle.
