Who needs games: PlayStation 4's first year [EUROGAMER]

Oh i freaking loved that period between TLOU, Diablo 3 (so many wasted hours) and then Destiny to shit all that awesomeness up :P! I already have GTAV ready pre-ordered since I know it will be the superior version. I am also mostly referring to this holiday period where Sony definitely looks to be in a weaker position, especially since Microsoft is making a very worthy push.

I'll just play them all. My XBO is ready for whenever MCC fixes online, my PS4 is ready for GTAV, my WiiU is ready for smash, and my PC is ready for DA:I. My body is ready.

I can't cope. DA:I, far cry 4 and GTAV are all individually big enough to take all of my free time until Christmas. And I have a free copy of AC Unity that I won here. And Halo. And Driveclub sitting there waiting for online to be fully fixed.

No games :)

posts like this are making me wonder just how much console sales are driven by people constantly flipping from one to the other every time a hot exclusive or 2 comes out :) ...

Not much seeing how the exclusive games so far hardly sell anything.
In fact what some people call hot exclusive in reality hardly mean anything.

I've owned PS3, xbox 360 and wii last gen, this gen it's currently xbox one and wii u.

I'm hoping uncharted 4 is the killer game I'm waiting for otherwise the PS4 money will on an xbox one for my lad instead.

I could have bought a ps4 at any time in the last year but nothing has pulled me in yet. For all its initial teething problems the MCC is a godsend to me and I'm happy that the management at xbox had the foresight to put it together as it will keep me going all the way until halo 5.

Based on what I've read, it's being made by an independent developer with the Unity engine. I think it's hardly misinformation to refer to it as indie.

Except it goes against the very definition of what an indie is. You can say that it's a "smaller title" or whatever other qualifier you prefer, but a game owned and published by Microsoft is not an indie, period.

What a dumb fucking article. I've put more hours into my PS4 in its first year than any console I've ever owned.

Fucking dumb.

Seen gameplay:
2015:
PS4 : Until Dawn, Rime, Tomorrow Children, Bloodborne, Order 1886, Uncharted 4, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Tearaway Unfolded, Alienation.
XB1 : Fable Legends, Scream Ride, State of Decay YOE, Quantum Break, Halo 5 Guardians,

Without gameplay:
2015:
PS4 : Ratchet PS4, MLB 15(unannounced, but c'mon)
XB1 : Rise of Tomb Raider, Forza 6(unannounced, but c'mon)

Undated:
Wild, Crackdown, Phantom Dust, Scalebound, The Last Guardian.

Persona 5 is still a 2015 game for the west.

Probably a very easy thing to say for reviewers who get all of their games free.

If I got all of my steaks free, I'd notice if there were a few less steaks than usual.
Considering I have to pay for my steaks, I don't know what they're on about.

Regardless of the lack of big exclusives this year, it hasn't stopped me playing the system more than anything else. In fact I've put off buying some games simply because I won't have the time to put in to them. I didn't get to put much time into Alien because I was busy with Destiny and Shadow of Mordor and ended up putting Alien to one side and probably won't even play it again. I've neglected to buy some PSN games too.

There's plenty to play out there now. And it just means that's there's so much to look forward to exclusive wise in the future too. I don't need to buy another system to fill the gaps. There's no gaps to fill.

I'm not considering its been out for 2 years already. The games have been great however so there's that.

Well, in all fairness the Wii U has been out an entire year longer than the PS4 and XBox one. It's almost like comparing the XBox One in 2014 to PS4 in 2015 when they were both released in 2013.

Oh yeah I get that it's still amazing to see though when it has no 3rd party support and a sparse line up in terms of quantity is all. The Quality speaks for itself of course.

Why did you buy PS4 then when you need this only for Bloodborne? Did you expect PS4 to announce and release games in 12 months from every big studio?

PS4 try to cater every kind of gamer so the exclusives released by them so far may not be what some want to play but caters some other people like next year you might the games you like and others don't like.

Well cos I wanted a next gen console and at launch it was the best option? Since then most of the big games have all disappointed, it's not for lack of trying on my part.

2014 for AAA games has been fairly shit overall, and that translates in many people's eyes to disappointment with the ps4 and XB1; hence articles like this. That said the XB1 exclusives have been better received though, no wonder the ps4 might feel like a damp squib in comparison, the exclusives so far have pretty much all sucked/disappointed.

Of course I'm sure this will change in time but I've barely used my ps4 this year compared to my pc for indie games.

The animosity towards Sony from the anglo-saxon press has been tremendous ever since the PS2 dominated the market. Is it a case of cheering for the home player? Seriously, every issue that plagued MS was -and is, in some cases- obfuscated, while ever misstep of Sony lends itself to a formidable scrutiny.

It's almost as if there were another company, operating behind the scenes, that was desperately trying to sabotage their competitors by getting people on the internet to say negative things about them...

Who will have time to play any exclusives with Dragon Age:Inquisition, Far Cry 4, GTA V and LBP3 coming next week anyways? I'm still playing Diablo 3 lol. :D

I've been playing my ps4 much more than I played my ps3 in its first year, that's for sure.

Killzone, infamous, and tlou all kept me busy. Also I think its criminal how ffxiv is never mentioned in the exclusive conversation. Then you throw in great multiplats like shadow of motor, tomb raider, cod and the soon to be released dragon age? I'd say that's a solid year.

Its not a great year, but with the games mention, plus the order, bloodborne, and uncharted due in 2015 I dont see how any ps4 owner would be unhappy.

It amazes me that the PS4 has done so well with such a weak lineup. I get why gaffers bought the console, but what's the wide appeal to more casual gamers?

The PS4 just has that "it" factor, I guess. Combination of marketing, brand recognition, and being the clear best choice from a hardware/pricing perspective, maybe?
I'd say in the U.S. mainly it's MS missteps. like they don't offer the option of a kinect less bundle at launch. how stupid is that. brand recognition only takes you so far. look at Sony and the PS3. you can't offer a more expensive product that does 90% of the same as the cheaper product and expect to sell.

and maybe MS should've held back Gears of war judgement as a launch title.

as for places in Europe, they were always Sony land to begin with. it's why I'm suprised people still post Germany or Japan sales threads and act surprised. Sony is supposed to do well in those territories.

I don't get that analogy at all. If you pay for something, you're less likely to notice something is lacking?

See, this is an odd perspective to me. You can understand why NeoGAF would buy it-- the same place where there are people shouting about exclusives-- but not why the mass market would buy it.

The mass market doesn't give a shit about exclusives (with some narrow exceptions).

It's this place that has such a hard time accepting that. We had huge arguments over who had the best LAUNCH EXCLUSIVES last year. No one gives a fuck. Goddamn.

Do you have Madden?
Do you have FIFA?
Do you have CoD?
Do you have AssCrud?

This place is like DO YOU HAVE FIRMWARE UPDATES?

But there are lots of games...

There's definitely a lot of games, I have several PS4 games that I haven't even started yet, but I think that the point of the article is that the PS4 line-up right now isn't very compelling if you're looking for exclusives that you can't play elsewhere. I really can't disagree with that.

It's a situation that will change next year but Sony should really be patting themselves on the back for managing to launch a system this well considering the quality of their exclusives.

Shouldn't the PS4 be faulted for the released games it missed out on, and not for hypothetical games that doesn't even exists?

Thank You

The majority of people can't afford to buy every game that comes out, especially as soon as they do.

Sure, you can look at lists and tut and shake your head, but most people probably have a backlog as it is won't have even noticed a lack of games*.

Plus, yunno, I want steak.

*if there is, which there isn't.

I haven't touched the ps4 since unity came out which I played for couple hours ....and now I have zero motovation to go back to it.. That piss frame rate

..and looks like I won't be touching it again until batman ..

So glad I have 2nd console. Wii u <3

Maybe, but the market doesn't think like that. It's not, "Where can I buy the best exclusive games?" The biggest sellers are multiplat. It's no mystery why the PS4 is doing well. The mystery is why people struggle to reconcile that with what's in their brains.

Such a weird narrative that Microsoft is somehow an exclusives juggernaut while Sony "has no games" when it really just boils down to Microsoft having 1 more first party retail exclusive than Sony this fall. And if we include 3rd party and digital download only exclusive games that number flips incredibly in Sony's favor.

It's exactly the same script that was being sold to us last year and most of the xbox exclusives are now multiplatform leaving only Forza 5 as the lone retail exclusive from then.

We need to approach this conundrum of PS4 success with evidence based reasoning.

I used to think that consoles sale based on their firmware updates. Now that it has been shown that this is not the case we need a different explanation.

Livestreams and events.

Playstation has done more livestreams and has even one more major event planned in December. QED.

(Nintendo streams don't count because they are not live.)

Bingo. Having the best third party games matters.

Are you mad? The PS4 firmwares are 2000% more stable than the competition's! Surely it's selling based on all that stability.
