Who puts on the best live concert?

There is absolutely nothing like a Phish show.

They're playing 4 nights over New Years at Madison Square Garden and won't repeat a single song.

Cannot fucking wait.

Definitely Springsteen, especially with the E Street Band. Nonstop 3-4 hour long concerts (sometimes even longer), changes the setlist every night, plays rarities and stuff they've never done before, and they take requests from the crowd, all while playing with the energy and stamina of musicians half their age.

One of my biggest regrets is going to see Eminem at a festival instead of the Prodigy. They had the same timeslot, but Eminem was late, so while we waited for 45 minutes for him to appear, we could see The Prodigy stage light up with fire and shit and hear "Firestarter" in the distance. The crowd was going crazy, and all we thought was "we could be there."

Of the 30 or so concerts I've been to, there have been some incredible ones:

TV on the Radio - 2 amazing concerts, 1 during the Return to Cookie Mountain tour....but it was in a venue that maybe had 300 people in it (working off of memory). I got a setlist and talked with them after the show. At that point in time I was a very star-struck fellow, and was amazed to talk to my idols. The amount of variance in the live songs from the album versions coupled with the frenetic energy was quite amazing. Although hamstrung by a lack of a full instrumentation, I saw them play a year or so later in Pittsburgh during the Dear Science tour. It was equally amazing. I recently saw them at a festival-lite experience, and it was disappointing, I think mainly because the sound mixing and strict schedule (and audience) didn't really fit the band.

Wilco - Seen them, god, nearly four times now (or five?). Tweedy is amazing during the breaks, and they have a very large catalog to cull from--not to mention covers. Their live versions often feature Nels Cline on the guitar (good for earlier works to add some spice), or potentially a couple of acoustic songs. Some of the best Stadium concerts ever. Absolutely sublime.

The Raconteurs - I saw them during the tour for their first album, and Jack White really delivered. Benson and White had a great rapport, rifffing off of one another and adding extended solos during various tunes. I imagine this would translate to White Stripes live concerts, as from the recorded ones I've heard and seen on YoutTube, they look quite exhilarating.

Radiohead - It depends on if you can handle Yorke's shaky live voice. I can't handle it with Kanye West, so his concerts are a supreme disappointment to me. There's enough variation in the setlist usually to make these worthwhile concerts.

The Shins - I"m not sure whether they're hit or miss, but I was supremely disappointed the first time I saw them. It was essentially just listening to each album being played over the live speaker. However, I saw them a couple of years ago in Seattle during the Port of Morrow tour and they blew me away. Amazing show.

Waxahatchee - Recency bias here, but she put on a great show for cheap. Dr. Dog is always a good showing as well. Also enjoyed the time I saw Ghostland Observatory, The Mars Volta (I hate their albums) put on a FANTASTIC experience, Arctic Monkeys had a The Shins like experience with 1 for 2, The Toadies were fantasmic live though I'm not a huge fan of their music, Animal Collective were also 1 for 2 on amazing shows, Fleet Foxes put on a good show as did Xiu Xiu and Bon Iver, The Notwist were interesting live as was Kishi Bashi, Explosians in the Sky were a great Festival experience while I played beach Volleyball whilst intoxicated, Sword was frenetic...though I didn't appreciated getting an elbow to the face in the mosh pit (that's why I don't do that stuff....).

THISSSSS!!!!!

And fuck all those bands that depend on dumb fireworks and other bullshit to put on a great show. It should all be about the music and the emotions. That U2 stage just looks stupid, ridiculous and even unethical to spend all those resources for just a damn show, specially coming from somebody like bono who apparently is so concerned about everything... well, just my point of view.

Neurosis

they're transcendental

Radiohead, Low, John Zorn (especially Cobra or Electric Masada), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Prince, Portishead, Death Grips, The Dead Weather, Tool

(Only listing acts that still perform)

The most surprisingly fantastic live act I've ever seen was Grouplove. I don't particularly care for their music–I went with a group–but holy shit they were amazing live. If I was deaf, I would've never guessed they were an alt pop band.

The Who were. Probably not any more.

Other than The Who, Arlo Guthrie was the best concert I've been to. I saw him at a festival where I went to see Don Henley (who sucks lives BTW) and I was completely blown away by Arlo.

Pink Floyd
Ohh, I bet.
That wouldn't be possible now but I'd love to see Gilmour/Waters solo one day (will be watching out for Roger next year since I read he may do an arena tour for the new album he's working on). Would have tried for Gilmour this year but tickets had all sold out by the time I saw. Closest I've gotten is The Australian Pink Floyd and whilst they were obviously not the real thing, they were actually pretty great! Will be going to see them again next year.

God I hate it when people post "end thread" as though they have the definitive objective opinion that cannot be challenged.

P.S. Radiohead. End thread.

Saw Roger Waters do The Wall twice a few years ago... unbelievable. But it's almost unfair to call that a concert... it's theatre on an unprecedented scale.

Never heard of Yeezi, but most of the rest of the mentions are all top notch; I've seen a good deal of them.

However, no one comes close to Iron Maiden. Got to see them headline about 5 years ago and was just blown away.

I'd also like to mention the following:
-Transiberian Orchestra
-Glen Hansard
-Myles Kennedy (in any band)

They are good live too, really dancy.

1982-1991 Metallica (Listen to Seattle '89 Live Sh*t: Binge and Purge or Monsters of Rock Moscow 1991) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOldXkcqf_Q

1990-1991 Pantera (Moscow 1991)

1980-1989, 2001 Iron Maiden (Live After Death 1984, Maiden England 1988, Rock in Rio 2001)

There are no equals and it's not physically possible to keep the kind of intensity they had indefinitely.

System of a Down, both times were amazing shows, the command they have over a crowd is stunning.

Also, Bjork, simply a magical experience...

Nine Inch Nails' With Teeth tour was pretty great

Rammstein Made in Germany tour was pretty great

Tool 2012 tour was pretty great

An Evening with Machine Head was pretty great

Flogging Molly 2008 for the Green 17 Tour was pretty great

Neutral Milk Hotel's farewell tour was pretty great

But the best show I've ever been to in my life was Peelander-Z in a shitty dive bar. Good beer, good friends, and punk rock that sounds like the Ramones if it was played by members of the Power Rangers/Kamen Riders. Their stage show is hugely interactive and just pure fun.

Subjective question based on music preference I think. I just paid over $100 for a Tool ticket and I don't feel like that's too much. I'm a big fan and I think they put on a great visual show. I would also say that 15 years ago Garth Brooks put on one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I saw TOOL on that Halloween show that people went nuts over.

They put on a good show, but god damn... TOOL fans are fucking retarded sometimes.....

Personally Green Day put on the best performance i've ever seen. They knew their audience and played to it. Hell of a fun show.

Paramore was great about 6 years ago- Hayley's voice is amazing live. Don't know if they're as good now with the lineup changes though.

Strung Out. Seen over 200 bands and they undeniably have the best live show. Seen them 9 or 10 times and every time the singer is in the crowd with the fans. So good.
Runner ups are Rush, Lagwagon, Every Time I Die, Buzzcocks and Propagandhi.
Worst ever is a tie between Five Finger Death Punch and Motley Crue.

Iron Maiden and The Flaming Lips are the two best shows I've been to.

I saw Maiden during their Somewhere Back in Time show and was amazed at just how good they still are. Sounded even better than the original recordings on most songs.

The Flaming Lips I saw when they headlined a small one-day festival in Philadelphia. The performance started with Wayne Coyne crowd surfing in a giant hamster ball, and only got more entertaining from there.
