Who started to play the Fire Emblem series with Awakening?

As we know, Nintendo just annunced Fire Emblem Fates has sold over 300,000 the first 3 days in the US, becoming the bigger success of the series.

Since i'm italian, i still need to wait for play Fates. :P

The series is literally changed from a niche game to one of the stronger Nintendo series actually.

I wonder how that happened honestly... Awakening was literally the Fire Emblem savior. It did a lot better than what Nintendo hoped. A LOT of guys started to play this series with Awakenig. I'm one of those guys, for example.

My first Fire Emblem was Awakening as well, and thanks this amazing game now i know one of my favourite series ever. :)

Anyway, loved this game. The gameplay, the soundrack, the characters ( ESPECIALLY the charaters), and the story too, even if many guys says is nothing of special. I really liked it.

I have never played Fire Emblem and, honestly, have no intention to start in next months or years (sorry, too many games!), but what exactly made Awakening such a hit?
 
Started with FE7 on GBA. Still loved Awakening despite it making a bunch of changes I know people weren't a fan of
 
I got into FE when my friend let me borrow his copy of Awakening. I'd say that was a great introduction to the series because it piqued my curiosity and got me to find a copy of Shadow Dragon for my old DS. That same friend has played a good majority of the games so talking with him about the tropes and jokes in the series is fun while I try and make my way through these games. I'm currently enjoying Birthright, but it is a little too easy, though I love the characters and environments. I'll be starting up my first run of Conquest soon, which has my friend pulling out his hair on Hard, so I'm looking forward to it.
 
I started with Awakening, but am a long time fan of this genre. I missed it on GBA because I found Advance Wars first and just stuck with that. FF Tactics Advance seemed like a safer bet so I never gambled on Fire Emblem.

I wanted to go back and play the GameCube and Wii ones but couldn't find them anywhere, and this was around the time the XCOM reboot came out so that scratched the itch.

I got Awakening well after it came out, because I was going to be away from home and wanted a portable tactics game. At the time, finally, Fire Emblem seemed to be the best option to go with. After playing it I scolded myself for not picking up the series sooner.
 
Not only was Awakening my introduction to the series but my re-introduction to Nintendo after not owning one of their consoles for like 10+ years. I absolutely adore Final Fantasy Tactics, and while Awakening is unique in its own right it is a Japanese SRPG. Still my favorite 3DS game. I ended up buying the SE of Fates and the SE new 3DS XL. Yep, I'm a fanboy of the new direction of FE.
 
I started with 7 but my girlfirend started with Awakening, she was very interested in the marriage mechanic and a bit of the strategy. She seems to be a big fan of the permadeath and mechanics now, so she's interested in heading back into the older games.
 
I started with FE Awakening and it was my favorite game of 2013.
 
I started with awakening, and have been in love with FE since. It was initially the artstyle, the social/dating sim aspects, and eventually the demo that sold me on the game. The gameplay and strategy involved just cemented that love even further.

i think it was the fact they made it assuming it would be the final game in the series.

iirc, in an old interview they mentioned that FE's declining sales were a problem and that if FE Awakening didn't sell over 250k, it would be the end of the series. so, the devs were advised to put everything they had into the game and make it the best possible sendoff of the series in case it was the last one.

turns out it completely turned things around and FE is now more popular than it has ever been.

i'm still pissed that F-Zero never got a chance to go out with a bang like this. we needed one last 3D F-Zero!
 
I started with Awakening. It was pretty cool until I ran out of weapons during a mission.
I really like the simpler supply system in Advance Wars.
 
I tried Sacred Stones a bit from the 3DS Ambassador program, but I never really got into it for whatever reason. I picked up Awakening later since it seemed like a good place to get started with the series, and because I kept seeing screenshots of dialog on Twitter. I've been very slowly working my way through the game since then (I just hit chapter 12 last night, for an idea of how slowly I'm progressing). I play on normal/classic, so I tend to put the game don for a few weeks after losing a unit due to a stupid mistake halfway through a mission I've spent the past 45 minutes-hour on and not wanting to redo the hole thing right away.
 
I started with Awakening.

I got a few hours into the game, and I definitely see the appeal of the franchise, but I've never been able to mesh with strategy rpgs. Even Valkyria chronicles, which is even straddles the line of the genre, couldn't push me over the hump.

Seemed like a great game and great franchise, just wasn't for me. Still waiting for that SRPG that can pull me into the franchise.
 
I started with Awakening and liked it so much I went back and bought a copy of Path of Radiance. That should tell you how much I loved Awakening.
 
Loved it. Didn't play earlier because the concept of permadeath was so unappealing. I did play the abassador copy beforehand but I didn't like it

Think the option to not have permadeath is a pretty big factor in widening the fanbase.

I started with FE7 myself though. Permadeath kinda intrigued me and my biggest worry was item durability. Not anymore though, obviously.
 
Started with Fire Emblem (7). Favorite's probably PoR.

Enjoyed Awakening, but at the same time missed the "finite" nature of the older FE games. Excited for everything about Fates, seems like a love letter for FE fans old and new.
 
I did! Well, mostly - I played a bit of Path of Radiance back in the day on a friend's copy, but it didn't click.

The three factors that really attracted me were the customizable avatar, the character designs, and the children. I love playing matchmaker with characters and giving that tangible, visible, biological results really kept me hooked.

The art attracted me, the avatar sold me, the low barrier of entry kept me, the matchmaking hooked me.
 
I started with Awakening and loved the hell out of it. I'm in the middle of replaying Skyward Sword right now, but as soon as I'm done with that I can't wait to spend weeks absorbed in Fates.
 
I started with Awakening. I normally don't dig SRPGs too much so maybe that's why some of the design choices that pissed off longtime FE fans grabbed me so much. I also really liked the characters and their interactions with each other, the concept of two units having children that shared their attributes, and the overall story. Yes I know it's not a great story, it doesn't have to be for me to enjoy it.

Got out of my comfort zone this time and started with Conquest, and I gotta say I'm really digging the more varied, difficult skirmishes. I still don't play with permadeath on though because I don't see a point if you're just going to reload your save to keep your units from dying anyway.
 
Started with Path of Radiance around it's release, then picked up FE GBA and Sacred Stones shortly there after and got Radiant Dawn at release.
 
Started with Path of Radiance. Replayed that game soooo many times before playing Sacred Stones then finding a copy of FE7 which was GREAT. I never played that remake FE, but enjoyed RD for what it was.

I love Awakening. I'm not a big fan of the current direction specifically bc of the writing for the story stuff, and I was hoping the dating focus would be an Awakening specific thing before going back to how it used to be. Need to play Fates before completely judging though, but I'm just a bit...shaky on whether I want it or not. Maybe when it gets cheaper, just to be safe.
 
I did. I'm not even sure where I would find copies of the other Fire Emblem games besides Sacred Stones (which I have via 3DS Ambassador) for a reasonable price, so even if I wanted to go back I probably can't without spending ludicrous amounts of money.
 
I started with Rekka no Ken (The first Fire Emblem released outside Japan) and have played everyone released here since.

I really don't like Awakening.
 
Actually started with 4 (Seisen No Keifu). No idea how I got into it, but I was hooked. Worked my way forward/backward from there.

Awakening is cool. Needs to be so much harder though which was the greatest disappointment (maps were basic and enemies didn't pose a threat).

Can't wait to go for Conquest when it finally gets released here (despite all 3 Fates games not even having a set release date yet).

I'm honestly glad that Fire Emblem was saved and that it's now more popular than it's ever been, but I see little to nothing of what I liked in the series left in it anymore. Trying to slog my way through Fates is challenging with the abhorrent writing pandering hardcore to the self-insert anime fans and the overly-designed anime characters are so cringe-worthy that I can't relate to or humanize them in any way. A large amount of the discussion that I'm seeing online is people talking about which character they find the sexiest or people upset that they can't virtually pet the anime faces to make them blush.

Glad it's still around but it feels like a completely different game than it used to be.


EDIT: Sorry to be so negative about Fates but man... It just gets me going haha
 
I started with awakening because I didn't even know the series existed before then. Which is weird cause I played Smash Bros all the time. Guess I never thought about where Ike and Roy were from.
 
Fire Emblem 7 was my first, but Awakening reintroduced me to the series I had left after Sacred Stones. Been thinking of picking up Path of Radiance, but dem eBay prices...
 
I started with Awakening, but have since played through roughly half of the games in the franchise. Absolutely love Fire Emblem, and I can't wait for Fates to be released over here
 
Moi. I played it a month after Persona 4 Golden. It didn't click at first but my third new game it did and it left a huge hole, just like P4G.

Those months were some waifulicious times, let me tell ya.
 
Mine was regular Fire Emblem for the GBA. Awakening made me nervous about the direction the series might be heading and Fates proved me right. So Awakening was the beginning of the end for me.
 
I started with Awakening, yeah. What kept me from trying the older games were that I heard they were super hard and characters permanently died, so I avoided the releases.

What got me interested in Awakening was that I heard you could play matchmaker with the units which sounded cute and that you could turn off permadeath. Also the art style was much more welcoming. But what really sold me on the game was that there was a demo I could try without making a purchase I might regret.

Since Awakening I've gone back and played older games in the series and I'm currently loving Birthright as well.
 
Started with FE7(which is still my favorite one so far) and I enjoyed awakening but I personally think that's the weakest entry after shadow dragon...

I totally see where you're coming from. I really hope they get new character designers and artists in the switch to NX. I also really want to see them do away with marriage, or at least children.
