I think it's one of those cases where it's so balanced that it depends on the individual hippos and rhinos.

If they are both in a tight space or engaged in a close fight, I'd say the hippo has a good chance. Water fight, hippo, of course. If the Rhino has a little bit of room to charge and use his horn, he'll have a good chance to emerge on top. But really I think they're buddies IRL.

Hippo and it isn't remotely close. They are notorious for wanton, unprovoked violence and are the most deadly living thing in Africa outside of mosquitoes. From Wikipedia:

I've read that there have been a few rare cases of rhinos fatally goring elephants, and rhinos are heavier than hippos on average. I think a rhino would have a good shot, but rhinos are one of my favorite animals so I'm also biased.

Hippos being killers absolutely means something. They relish staring into their victim's eyes as the life leaves them. The glint showing the last remnants of consciousness flees as the Hippo looks down upon them and smiles. The final breath comes as a sigh and the Hippo knows its task is complete.
