Whoa, PS3 doesn't support MTP?

I knew it didn't support HFS+, but MTP support didn't cross my mind at all. I guess i never thought about it since i used the UMS firmware for my iRiver H10. However, i recently upgraded to a 32G Creative ZEN, and was pretty surprised that it didn't show up at all. Hopefully they add MTP support soon.

I just wish it would support any external hard drive format that supports single file sizes larger then 4Gb.
For me. It's the only thing that's missing.

HFS+? MTP? UMS? WTF.

Isn't MTP some proprietary Microsoft format though?
it's not proprietary, and there's MTP support in Mac and Linux, as well as many windows apps, like Winamp.

HFS+ = filesystem used by macs and mac formattd ipods

MTP = filesystem used by many mp3 players by creative, iriver, cowon, archos, sandisk, etc...

UMS = USB MSC = the 'standard' USB system where a device shows up as a removable drive

MTP isn't a file system. Its a protocol for communicating with a multimedia device. It's like DNLA in that you see media arranged in some way but that's not necessarily how they are arranged underneath.

In theory an MTP device could also show itself as a mass storage device to any PC that doesn't recognize MTP. I suppose some devices would do this and others wouldn't.

how would that work?

from what i understand about MTP, it's file based, not block based, so you only have access to the device on a file by file basis.

i guess you DID say in theory, so somene would just have to implement a system that would accommodate for that... but then it would be on a device by device basis...

What does Microsoft's MTP offer that couldn't be achieved through open standards? It seems like they've offered a solution to a problem no one had.

they solved the problem of way to ensure that media is transferred to a device and cataloged. sure, others have solved this before, but not with a standard solution like this.

all I know is I remember hearing about how 360s and PS3s stopped being able to dock onto ipods or something after a certain firmware update...

...

yeah, I don't know shit, but what tanod said. Maybe try display all?
