Why are people compelled to drink alcohol?

Alcohol on its own DOES NOT TASTE GOOD.
You're projecting. You can use your amateur hour psychology all you want, but -- either via acquired delusion or their own, unique perception of taste that differs from your's -- some people actually like alcoholic beverages. Like, for reals. I go to places all the time, see "Beer X" on tap, and think "Mmmm... I'll have a tall glass of that!"

I know that this may sound like bullshit. And again, you are free to continue doing your thing wherein you act as though, having read a psych 101 text book, you're going to get to the heart of this issue. However, I think there's a much simpler explanation: taste is subjective, and I'm not you.

This isn't complicated stuff, here.

I like the taste of SOME beers, I also like to pair certain beers with dishes. I am also a fan of getting hammered when the occasion arises. Some people do not like doing these things. They are not worse off for it but on the flip side I do not wish to be judged or told that I have somehow convinced myself of enjoying something.

NAILED IT

It's a product of peer pressure. Most alcohol tastes horrible, and it's the only drink I can think of where any attempt to make it tolerable is met with accusations of being feminine, pussy, etc.

There really is no other explanation why anyone would advocate putting salt, Tabasco sauce, lime, tomato juice, etc in a drink.

Peer pressure aside, no. The accusations of 'pussy' etc are never applied to a well done gin and tonic or whiskey sour for example. It's when you start ordering melon balls and apple martinis that get you the jibes.

There's a reason for that. Those types of cocktails are cheesy as fuck, requiring tons of liqeur and/or sugar, and the goal is to typically disguise not just the ethanol burn of the base alcohol, but the flavor as well. A good cocktail is meant to enhance and compliment the flavor of a good spirit. Otherwise we might as well just make nothing else besides everclear punch. People put those things in alcohol drinks for the same reason they garnish or flavor any other food. That's like being confused as to why people use condiments.

There's a pub near Long Beach that has bottomless mimosas all Sunday morning. Do you know how awesome it has to have a good omlette and potato pancake with infinite mimosas while watching NFL pre-game?

-Alcohol drinks are the best tasting drinks there are
-It's fun
-It's easier to get to know people while having a couple of drinks, if you don't drink it might make the other person uncomfortable
-Music sounds better
-It relaxes you
-Makes scoring women easy

I'm out.

There's plenty of times when I'll go to a place and have 1 beer with my meal, which does exactly nothing as far as getting me buzzed. Tastes good to just sip on, especially off tap.

I dunno, it seems like you and I might be able to have a relatively entertaining if loud and obnoxious argument.

I do get a sick sense of enjoyment out of argumentative discussion. I like you.

Projecting? He says he cannot understand how people like the taste. Not exactly projecting it on to the rest of us :p

No he, SCOULaris and some others are projecting how it tastes to them as a greater occurrence, it's their personal issue and they need to just deal with it instead of assuming we're all in denial about it tasting like shit and only drinking to serve some other purpose. It's fucking insulting. And as someone who actually had an alcoholic in their family, I consider that crap from brianjones rude as fuck.

i dont need alcohol i just like the taste

Do I need to go into the laundry list of drinks I enjoy, or are you just going to be an insufferable ass?

leinenkugel is based in your state and makes good beer. go forth.

I saw their damn commercials every time I watched the Brewers. May as well give it a whirl tonight.

So right now the list that sounds appealing to me is:

Fat Tire
Guinness
Leinenkugel

I'll have some tonight after work, see how I feel about them.

I would argue that drinking is paired with fine dining more because the historical attachment of social status to alcoholic beverages, which has transformed over the years into the concept of feeling "sophisticated" when drinking alcohol with a meal. Like I said, plenty of alcoholic beverages taste decent, but I'll always prefer something non-alcoholic if I'm eating. Alcohol doesn't taste good enough in any form or combination to warrant me paying high prices for it when it doesn't taste as good as cheaper, non-alcoholic beverages.

I've been a bit hyperbolic, and I realize that everyone has different tastes. That being said, don't claim that it will eventually "click" with me. I'll never drink alcohol with meals unless I want to get drunk while I eat (which sometimes happens). If I'm thirsty and there's a cold glass of orange juice sitting next to a quality beer, I'll drink the OJ every time. If I'm looking to get buzzed moreso than simply quench my thirst, I'll grab the beer.

To me it has always seemed like people convince themselves that pairing alcohol with certain foods "enhances" them because it makes them feel mature and sophisticated. I don't buy into that. Alcohol on its own DOES NOT TASTE GOOD. Drink some ethanol. Taste good? Didn't think so. So it would stand to reason that it lessens the taste of whatever it's mixed with. Fortunately for alcohol, it makes up for what it lacks in taste with its pleasant side effects.

I get that feeling about sophistication if you're talking about wine + steak or some other fine dining, but when you put a proper beer and pizza together, there's no juice or other non-alcoholic drink I can think of that matches that experience. They go together similar to a rich moist cake + milk.

Don't drink, don't really intend possibly ever. That said, I have nothing against those who want to, drink and be merry, that is if you're a happy drunk.

I like the way you think. I enjoy a good drink as much as the next guy, but if someone doesn't like drinking or doesn't even want to try it then that's his/her choice to make and as long as he or she isn't a snotty person who looks down on everyone else for drinking then good for them.

Edit:

And to those saying it doesn't taste good, I'm glad you've decided what everyone else should think. On a related note, I don't like the taste of grapefruit so anyone who says they do like it are either lying or have been trained by society to like it.

Straight what?
Something you're not:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_edge
Straight edge is a subculture of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs. It was a direct reaction to the sexual revolution, hedonism, and excess associated with punk rock.[1][2] For some, this extends to not engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and not using caffeine or prescription drugs.[1] The term was coined by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat in their song "Straight Edge".[3]

I basically only drink when I need to tolerate other people/friends being turned into drunk idiots.

Though something like 1-2 beers or a glass of champagne can make socializing within a group easier.

I want one now :(

I can appreciate the taste of alcohol, but it doesn't taste "good". Pure spirits, I can rinse them around in my mouth and appreciate the feel and the vapors and the warmth and the after taste, etc. But they aren't "good" in comparison to anything but the experiences of drinking.

I think it's a relative thing. And yes, I am drinking as we type.

However, I think there's a much simpler explanation: taste is subjective, and I'm not you.

I agree. Which is why I don't appreciate everyone telling me that I'm wrong for thinking that alcoholic beverages don't taste as good as non-alcoholic beverages. The "you just haven't tried the right drinks yet" argument pisses me off too. I've had all of the drinks that everyone listed as being examples of great-tasting alcoholic beverages. They're fine, but alcohol can never improve the taste of anything. That's just my opinion, anyway, and sorry if I was acting like mine is the only correct one.

I probably drink a total of 9-10 drinks in an entire month. Shit's expensive, yo. Still, I very much enjoy the taste of a variety of liquors. I don't get how it's so hard to understand that different people enjoy different flavors. Just because you find it gross does not mean we do.

I'm personally pretty into slightly sweet beers lately, here are some that I really like:

Celebrator (imported, expensive)
St. Michael's Cream Stout (imported, expensive. buy nothing else by St. Michaels)
Hoegaarden (MUST be off tap for this one, loses something magic when bottled)
Alasken Winter (winter seasonal, 6.4% alc/vol. good.)
Bayern Doppelbock (holy shit 8.4% alcohol and tasty. This shit will get you fucked)
Anderson Valley Summer Solstice (buy this shit next summer, it's godlike even in the can)

I wonder if any of these could be found in a grocery store anywhere near me? My brother in law was talking about some kind of Japanese sweet beer at Dog Fish Head.

Also for a delicious flavored vodka I recommend Three Olive's Cherry Vodka. Shit taste delicious. Mix in some coke and you have a banging Euro Cherry Coke.
