Why are people compelled to drink alcohol?

As if I'm going to put GOOD tequila in a mixed drink anyway. Fuckin' christ this thread.

I typically use a decent quality reposado but I'll use an anejo sometimes. The worst thing to do to good tequila is put it ANYWHERE near sour mix. That stuff is disgusting and I refuse to use it in my margaritas and long islands.

Marijuana is much, much better. And safer too.

I like alcohol a hell of a lot more than weed, and I enjoy both. I also like the act of drinking alcohol far more than the act of smoking weed. I can drink while doing other things, I can drink indoors (I don't like the smell of weed in my apartment), and I have plenty of available taste options in my fridge for alcohol.

Don't get me wrong. I love both, but I like alcohol way more. Also, I've never gotten laid because I smoked lot.

Better than the piss-water stuff you don't like the taste of?

Why would you waste good tequila on a mixed drink? That makes zero sense.

Nordic and North American culture and not personality

Dude. I've lived in Asia, and I've lived in North America. Let me tell you. North Americans are not wild about drinking like the asians are. Seriously. Living in Japan made me into an alcoholic and a chain smoker.

Are you trolling right now? The drink is still good just not the best. I'm not putting good tequila in a mixed drink, shit's expensive. Hell if I wanted to be an elitist about my alcohol, I better start a special alcohol fund because that's not cheap.

I don't understand why people don't get how alcoholic drinks work. I buy two different kinds of bourbon, the kind I drink straight and the kind I mix. I'm not going to use the expensive kind to mix, but I may drink the cheap kind straight if I feel like it.

Find me someone that hates alcoholic beverages, and I'll get them drinks where they can't taste the alcohol a bit. It's all in proper proportions of near tasteless liquors that can hide in the strong fruityness or sweetness of base drinks like sweetened lemonade or iced tea or a fruity punch with tons of carbonation and ice.

A 'badly' made drink is one where the alcohol is overpowering. If it's that bad, I'd rather just have a shot, without all the watered down bullshit that will send me to the urinal line that much quicker.

I agree. Which is why I don't appreciate everyone telling me that I'm wrong for thinking that alcoholic beverages don't taste as good as non-alcoholic beverages. The "you just haven't tried the right drinks yet" argument pisses me off too. I've had all of the drinks that everyone listed as being examples of great-tasting alcoholic beverages. They're fine, but alcohol can never improve the taste of anything. That's just my opinion, anyway, and sorry if I was acting like mine is the only correct one.

A nice whiskey substantially improves the taste of the glass it's poured in.

How would I know how alcohol works? I just drink cider :p

I'm just wondering. I turned 23 last week, and I have only drank a little wine like twice in my life. Why are people so eager to drink alcohol?

Edit:

Well, since the question has been answered for the most part another question I had, don't want to start another thread, is how do you view people who don't drink? Also do you know anyone who doesn't drink?

I don't trust people that don't drink.

its ridiculous how much fun i am with lowered inhibitions. honestly wish my sober self was more like my drunk self.

if you dont drink i'm always curious to why, top answers are
-medical
-just not my thing
-feel sick after

to each their own, shrug. but its horrible when people are at a party and not drinking, and dont know how to have a fun time because of that fact. i can't help but think hey, maybe you wouldnt be the recluse in the corner doing fuck all if you had a few drinks.. o wait its just not your thing? oh of course dont bother experimenting just a little, continue having fun by yourself over there.

The fact that you didn't have a cadre of friends dragging you out to a bar for your 21st birthday (or any birthday) is a sad statement on your life.
So true. For my 21st I drank the hardest and worst shots I've ever had. And I didn't pay for anything. Drinking is one of lifes greatest simple pleasures. I love drinking a cold beer on a friday afternoon not having to worry about anything at that moment.

Don't we have this thread like every few months.

I wonder if any of these could be found in a grocery store anywhere near me? My brother in law was talking about some kind of Japanese sweet beer at Dog Fish Head.

Also for a delicious flavored vodka I recommend Three Olive's Cherry Vodka. Shit taste delicious. Mix in some coke and you have a banging Euro Cherry Coke.

You should be able to find Alaskan Winter around you, that's easy. For some of the others you might have to go to a place with a huge beer selection. Luckily I live in Beer City, USA, so I gets to try lots of shit.

Every thread about general alcohol consumption around here leads to a bunch of people who don't understand a damn thing about alcohol acting high and mighty while being completely misinformed.

I mean it's nice that you don't drink; I understand why people don't drink. Just don't pretend you know anything about drinking.

Eh, I don't like the stench of weed on my clothing or on other people. Good buzz but terrible side-effect.

I wouldn't say it's terrible, especially compared to the stench of cigarettes. Smoke a bowl of weed in your bedroom, crack the window and turn on a fan and the smell is gone in an hour. Try doing that with a cigarette and you're stuck smelling that shit all day.

I feel the same thing about people who go to Subway. That baking bread makes people who have eaten there STINK. I look down on them too.

Screw your cherry flavored vodka. Drink real vodka!

Well, personally, I have no desire to tell you that you're wrong. However, if we hadn't already had this back-and-forth going on, I might suggest in a fashion that is not in any way supposed to be seen as condescending that I too used to feel that way. One day, though, beer clicked with me. I started to actually like it.

Am I guaranteeing that if you follow my lead, you too will reach the path of enlightenment that is enjoying the taste of a good beer? Well, no. I'm not you. You're not me. Personally, though, I'm not emotionally invested in trying to ensure that fellow forum denizens enjoy the same things I like. So, I might suggest that your opinion may change at some point.

Ultimately, though, I don't really care all that much as to whether or not you enjoy a beer with your meal. I do. But you're free not to. Rock on.

I find it amusing how serious non-drinkers regard alcohol. It's the same way how I regard people who abstain from marijuana, pork, etc... The non-users give it a fearful power that the regular users know doesn't even exist.

To this date I have never drank any alcohol, I fully intend to continue refusing to drink that vile poison. I dont really give a damn that people think its delicious. Dogs think antifreeze is delicious. Alcohol is just the human's version of antifreeze.

What is it, then?

I thought it was primarily a depressant, is that different than specifically a sedative? It's effects on you varies from the amount and time duration though I believe.

Well, okay, but have you ever actually drank antifreeze?

Several grams of ethanol ferment and are processed in your gut every day. Many fruits and vegetables metabolize into formaldehyde. "Poison" is relative.
