Why are people compelled to drink alcohol?

Because they like taste and enjoy the feeling it gives them? I don't drink but that's mainly because I think most alcoholic beverages taste horrible, not because I give a shit about the behavioural effects.

I don't drink. And I can have plenty of 'fun' without getting drunk, so yeah. As for people who do get drunk, if they want to have fun, that's fine, but good god are drunk people annoying when they're really drunk. But then again people are annoying anyway.

Too me, alcohol is delicious. I have no problems with people who chose not to drink; its the ones who act like they're better because of it or judge drinkers that kinda piss me off.

If alcohol didn't make you buzzed or drunk at all, would anyone drink it?

I would, just not as often.
or maybe more since I would be able to keep it down!
Fucking love me some mimosas.

I agree. Which is why I don't appreciate everyone telling me that I'm wrong for thinking that alcoholic beverages don't taste as good as non-alcoholic beverages. The "you just haven't tried the right drinks yet" argument pisses me off too. I've had all of the drinks that everyone listed as being examples of great-tasting alcoholic beverages. They're fine, but alcohol can never improve the taste of anything. That's just my opinion, anyway, and sorry if I was acting like mine is the only correct one.

I think I just have to add 'for me' to the end of all your sentences. I've nothing against your personal taste, and I can respect that alcohol's just not going to work in your flavor.
If I knew you IRL I would still try to find some alcoholic pairing for you that you would find kickass though

they dont have the same effects on your body

drinking alcohol isnt the same as taking a valium

no two sedatives have the exact same effects on your body, brother. keep letting us know how intelligent you are though, keep on arguing!

To this day, I still haven't found a beer that like. My friends get wide variety of beers giving me the chance to take a swig in hopes of finding one that suites me. Nadda. Sorry, they just taste bad to me.

Cooler, certain wines (mostly whites and dessert types), and mixed drinks are my thing. I gotta be careful with anything chocolate flavored- mudslides, spiked cocoa, and the like. They taste so good, I forget how much alcohol is in them. The one an only time I had a hangover wasn't pleasant. 2 glass of anything is tops for me.

saying you can replace alcohol with a pill doesnt make sense

For the same effect and feeling? Both make me goofy, affect my motor skills and lower my inhibitions. Get a fucking clue.

I misspoke about it being a sedative, when it is a depressant. Didn't mean to imply that the effects were the same, just that there were similarities.

I KNOW I'm insane and in the wrong, but the popularity of alcohol bugs the shit out of me.

I HATE that my girlfriend casually drinks, but I'd never bring it up to her.

To me, people that intentionally don't drink* are (in my eyes) social equals to religious fundamentalists that think the Earth is 6k years old.

*not counting AA members, of course.

I misspoke about it being a sedative, when it is a depressant in reality. Didn't mean to imply that the effects were the same, just that there were similarities.

Both pretty much have the same effect on me if we're talking specific drinks. I don't really know what he's trying to argue anyway. I'm saying if I want a similar fucked up vibe, I could just drug myself, but I like mixed drinks and I socialize with pals while doing so. I don't get his fucking beef.

Now this I agree with, a good party is always ruined by people who go too far with their drinking and become obnoxious. No control.

I drink, cuz i like the taste and after effects

One of my best friends dont drink at all, like , ever. But he's still cool, we out all the time, its not an issue for me.

Friends drinking(or not) shouldn't be an issue unless it gets in the way of life

This is what I'm talking about with regards to why I don't trust people who don't drink.

And you said alcohol was not a sedative? Does everyone have to apologize everytime they're wrong?

I don't even know what's being argued since I pretty much get the same general feeling from both, regardless of the technicalities or chemical reactions.

You don't have to not drink to get annoyed by drunks.

People who don't drink are almost always judgmental about it. It usually goes along with the decision to be "non-drinking anything" guy.

What bothers me the most is when alcohol is all that matters for people. Where they cannot be somewhere in a social context without alcohol even once. Where alcohol is the only equivalent of fun or effective way of socializing.
Other than that I don't see anything wrong if you are responsible and enjoy a drink.

^Agreed, which explains my earlier comment on not trying to convert 'em.

Sad but more than likely true. She's incredible in every other way so I'm trying to get over it.

Casually drinking is not a strike against incredibleness; on the other hand, snooty noses in the air that think casual drinking is either a vice or a sin is a strike against incredibility.

I will say I at least have a somewhat decent reason for my irrational hate.

My brother and sister are both addicts and basically ruined my childhood/teenage years with their alcohol and substance abuse.

Do you hate the fact that she drinks or the way that she acts after she's been drinking? If it's the former I'd say you're being judgmental. If it's the latter, do realize that alcohol affects people differently and how one person acts while inebriated is no reason to attack all alcohol.

I live in Louisiana in the middle of the land of drive through daiquiri shops, yet I don't drink and have never even finished a cup of beer. I don't see the point either. I can fit in with friends socially just fine without being inebriated.

It's the fact that she drinks at all. I've never actually been around her when she's been drinking, so I'm not entirely sure how she behaves.

I'm beginning to think a lot of people on GAF have a warped view of how they appear when they are drunk lol. I at the very least have something telling me in the back of my head that I'm acting like a jackass once the buzz starts coming.

Don't knock it til you tried it

That says more about their character, their weakness, their temperment, their values, than it does anything about alcohol.

Hell I know some heavy drinkers, who probably drink too much, and they are pleasant people who function just fine in their family and in the greater world.

It's like the guy who ruins his life playing WoW. Don't blame video games. It's really all about an invidual's character at that point (and of course I realize that some addictive and abusive traits we pick, and some we don't..)

Same here. I'd get drunk more often if it didn't taste like I was drinking some kind of poison every time it touches my tongue.

I'd rather get stoned.

Me too, and I do drink. Enjoying a particular alcoholic beverage need not involve getting drunk.

Yeah. I have pretty good self-control while fucked up, but I realize others are different.

That's a damn solid point but it's hard not to hate the thing they used as a catalyst for acting like horrid human beings.
