How many games in general have "normal" people as characters? You're really narrowing the selection down to a handful of games to begin with right there.

Normal like modeled after an everyday guy that is thrown into a extraordinary situation

basically black spiderman

Shadowman for the Dreamcast also?
Ohhh shit! I forgot about Shadowman for the 64. Man the graphics in that game were awesome when they came out imho. I must say I liked that game.

HOw many Asian main characters are there? Arabic? Native American? While there are some of these main character races caucasian main characters still dominate. Why? Well almost every character that comes out of Japan is caucasian and America is still modeling its characters mostly after the subconsicious midset of its developers (most females are hot, males are strong, ect.) Just give it time, there weren't many black characters in the begining of the movie or comic industry either

I would say most of the characters from Japanese, are indeed Japanese.

There are way less Hispanic main characters than black, white, asian, and middle eastern. And when you get one, it's usually an over the top stereotype sidekick. :\

Even the "I can't quit you, Dom!" achievement icon has him all small in the background. >:|

Cause there aren't many black people creating games?

this is the winning answer....

I will just take my games where I can create whatever character and pretend it was made for a black main lead

This was for a tooooooootally different reason though.

True! Which is why I expect the video game industry to diversify its characters quicker and with less resistence. Also another reason for the lack of diverse video game characters is that the interest groups of the country are more interested in attacking video games in general than attacking its lack of diversity or its stereotyping

Personally I don't think we have enough mixed-race lead characters. More Jade please. I would like to see a BG&E sequel featuring more of Her Mixedness struttin' her muffins.

"Look at all dat juice!"

Cole Train was freaking awesome. The Club, Bizarre's new game, has a black character as the lead.

Not enough Australian based lesbian dating sims. That alone would bring me back to PC gaming. Can you imagine a game modeled after, oh say, abbywinters? :)

In this day and age that the biggest copout. So just because there are no black developers they disregard they exist and when they do its the MTV version of what america thinks they act and look like. Come on.

This is a silly question but do you identify more with black characters vs. other characters, yourself being a black person? I doubt the answer is yes - its a very subjective thing and is more based off the material than anything. If the story the character is going through is something I can relate to race has no bearing at all. I do, however like to see stuff in games that isn't common, I like variety, so I welcome any character that strays from the norm. All colours welcome.

Who cares?

You know what, I absolutely HATE people who post this shit in threads. If you don't care, than say 'Personally I don't care' or bugger off full-stop. You have a two page thread with a discussion going on, so I'm guessing that some people do care. What a stupid thing to say. Keep this shit to yourself next time, if you want to contribute, contribute something worth reading please.

Beezle: No, Woolsey is not involved. It's all...SCEA and their icky translators at the time. "Translators."

And I forgot GTA.

Where are my Italian main characters? OMGZ and I don't mean stereotypes like in The Godfather and ... don't you even dare mention that walking stereotype aka Mario.

"Mamma mia!" indeed.

DAMNNNN, Theys taking our SHIT!!!! !@#!@@#$@#^%#$

I can't tell if it was the Japanese developers yet again failing to "accurately portray" "black people" or just a side effect of the translation.

The game I'm thinking of is Huck Finn...

I remember Next-Gen, back when it was still a print magazine, wanted to give FFVII a 1/10 for Barret's stereotyping. They weren't at all pleased with it but after discussion gave it a higher score.

Mario is Mexican.

I understand where u r coming from, there arent really any Black chars in games these days that aren't a stereotypes, what is given to consumers are games where you can change a char, to be african american, (I.E. hey my name is billy what color do you want me to be today?), I want a game built from the ground up with a african american char. from the jump.

Bad exambles are:

Barret: FF VII
Football/ Basketball players
Cole Train: Gears of War
Guys from Crackdown ( the cover guy)
Rapper games: 50 cent, and Def Jam
CJ: GTA : SA

Maybe things will change MAYBE, japanese ppl r japanese so i dont expect that from them but maybe the black chars. will come from american developers instead, I mean we got a black Jedi so thing r bound to change riiiiiiight?

Agree 110% but the screen name of the user makes it a bit more humorous, with the irony of his screen name and then making a two word post.

diatribe

A long, violent, or blustering speech, usually of censure or denunciation.

Derek Jeter?

His dad is black and mother is white so he would fit. Same would be said for Tiger Woods (except his mother is Asian) had speculawyer added him to the row of box covers.

Ok, I've never been good at telling what was racist (conotation...I understand the denotation).

But it seems to me that the only time main characters of color are created is when they want a stereotypical character, and that fits the race.

Basically, name a game that stars a black person who, if you never saw the character, and could just judge by his vocabulary and demeanor would seem white.

I know that's politically incorrect, but I also think 90% of the people here get what I'm saying. Black lead characters act ghetto, talk in ebonics, etc...

EDIT: To finish the thought...I don't know why that is, and I think that's too bad. I would love to play a "buddy cop action movie" where neither seemed like a stereotype.

I would also like to see that movie.

As i said MAIN characters, not supporting or side. Basically the guy you would see on the box cover.

Also I dont mean sterotypes, like the thug or the big black guy. Why can't black characters be portrayed as "normal" people? Say for instance like the character in Uncharted.

How the hell is Crackdown Guy a stereotype?

Also, why not complain about the great number of black people in media (particularly music) that actively reinforce these stereotypes? Why is a game with a black character in an urban environment being stereotypical when it pretty much follows along with the way real blacks portray themselves in music?
