Why are there no new 3D fighters?

I'm still waiting for Soul Calibur 6. I might die waiting. I do want them to take their time though and not rush it out the door clearly unfinished like SC5...which still managed to be one of the best in the series despite that.

Will always be a lot more satisfying than 2D for me. Having a great time with Xrd R though!!

VF3(tb) was so good ! Few games (if any) have had the same feeling of using the whole space.
For some reason I love 3D games but rarely enjoy 2D ones. I think it's because 3D is more intuitive (for me), you can "understand" the motion on the screen in a spatialized way, while 2D mostly feels like an exchange of arbitrary special motions. I never could "get" combos in 2D for example.

It's a shame 3d fighters have gone out of style as they're the only type I'm reasonably decent at. At least shell out a new soul cal. Hell, I'll even take another iteration as barebones as V!

There have been other 3D fighters

Final Fantasy Dissidia, the Naruto Ninja storm games (and other Cyberconnect/Namco fighters) and Pokken come to mind. And if you want to count it, a bunch of Power Stone clones are in the works too (Last Fight and Combat Core come to mind)

I guess if you meant stuff more in the vein of Tekken though, eh I don't really know what to say. It could just be not wanting to compete with Tekken. Even Namco didn't want Soul Calibur 5 to compete with Tekken Tag 2.

Do the Namco Anime games not count as 3D fighters?

Dragonball,Naruto,One piece, Gundam VS, J Stars.

They may not be AAA entries but i'm sure they are eating into other fighters lunch quite abit.

I think they would count.

That said, I don't know if they're really eating into other fighting game sales. Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto and Gundam are fairly big series on their own aren't they? I'm not sure that them selling well means that they're taking away sales from somewhere else

Yeah, those licensed anime fighting games aren't eating into anything. The people that are buying those are buying them for the license. They're not really competing with other games in the genre.

Still waiting for VF6! Which is kinda a problem, just always waiting for sequels. Back in the Saturn/PS days there were lotsa different 3D fighters pumped out. May not have liked 'em all but there was always something new just around the corner alongside series ya already liked.

I just want a new Virtua Fighter (or a new Fighter Megamix for that matter)
Forever waiting for FM2 ;_;

That's a pretty big problem in the fighter space in general. What was the last big title that wasn't based on another license? Blazblue or Skullgirls if you stretch the definition of big.

I'm waiting for another Soul Calibur 2 (in terms of quality, any other SC didn't do it for me)

edit: oh, maybe this is considered 2d?

Soul Calibur 6 please. I'm excited for Tekken 7, but if I have to compare my excitement level for SC6 and T7 then Tekken can go to hell.

I really want a new Bushido Blade. The high-drama fights were really unique in the genre. A VR version could be fantastic. I'm not sure who owns the IP at this point, it might be Index.

For the same reason we get only a few racing games.
Genre isn't enough profitable unless you have a strong brand behind it (like Gran Turismo, Forza, Mario Kart).

Because Tekken killed them all.
Tekken 6 on Xbox 360 and PS3 shipped 3.05 million units worldwide which isn't exactly a big number in the current AAA industry.

More like why are there no new fighters? It's by far the most sequelized genre out there. If it matters, it's a sequel, with very few exceptions.
There are tons, people just don't give a shit if it doesn't have some recognizable character from the 90s for the most part. Or they don't give it a chance because of its anime asthetic. Seriously there are loads out there. They just get little to no coverage from gaming focused media sites, have largely non-existant overseas marketing and then sell terribly so most people never hear about them.

With Tekken 7 being just around the corner I hope that Soul Calibur returns at some point too.. 2D is my favorite but I love to have variety.

Well, that's the thing. There are very few major racers around, but then you do get something like Project CARS which is pretty hardcore in a Rocksmith/Virtua Fighter kind of way.

With all the revivals and kickstarters and things going on, I would have hoped for some skilled diehard fighting fan to get a VF successor going.

And no, Dissidia, at least the arcade game, isn't a fighting game any more than, say, Dark Souls is. In fact, Dark Souls is probably more of a fighting game. Dissidia is literally a PvP JARPG.

Weird. I always figured 3D Fighters would be more popular since the barrier of entry is so much lower than 2D fighters.

I agree something needs to be done.

At this point the genre is rotten. Its old-ass conventions are rarely if ever challenged, and even less by any competitive-caliber games.

My hope is that once namco is finished with this Tekken nonsense we will get another Soul Calibur, it's understandable why they wouldn't put both out at the same time though.

I also wish Capcom was in a better situation then they are so we could get sequels to Tech Romancer or Star Gladiator but they aren't in the best of positions as a company so I don't really expect them to produce largely niche games.

Sega is also mostly dead so I wouldn't expect another VF anytime soon if ever. I'm sure Techmo will eventually release another DOA but the most likely want to get some of their many projects currently cooking out the door first.

The number of Devs that made 3D fighters was already fairly small at the genres peak and it's only gotten smaller over time with the declining health of some of their publishers.

I mean, I'm guilty of that. I want variety, not a sea of animu air dash fighters. Back in the 90s and early 00s there were way, way more options than either sequels or animu air dash fighters. It's not only the aesthetics, I also don't like Mahvel and similar fighters.

Yeah, satisfying is the word. The sense of momentum and impact feels good to me. And the increased range of movement. It's more than just an aesthetic. I need to get playing more fighters, it's always a genre I've enjoyed. Streetfighter is the only 2d series that ever grabbed me, but that was probably due to the age I was when SF2 hit.
