Why aren't 3D printers a huge deal right now?

Because while the technology is absolutely amazing, it is still in its infancy what with it being incredibly expensive for the layman and all.

Give it 5 more years.

Would you consider gaming expensive? The maker mini is under $200 and does exceptional work for what it is.

It's amazing to see my 6yr old take to tinkercad quickly and actually give a shit about a cad program. It is going to be insane to me to see her make things for school projects with our maker select. I remember making a small model of a neighborhood with wires and battery showing how electricity travels. This thing she could make anything she can create on the computer/imagine. Between this, pi zero, arduino, and all the other affordable electronic bits it's exciting as fuck to consider what is possible. Wish I had more brains to utilize this better.

Going to print this soon. Considering I have it but the bits on the side are broken. Goes to my metalhead tmnt figure from the 80s.

That alone makes it worth the purchase for my tiny brain.

Because the average person doesn't have the money for a good one nor the time to sit down and learn how to use it, while actually finding it functional enough to make it worth the price.

Even if you gave a decent one to the average person for free, they'd probably struggle to really make it useful.

Until you can just type in an object and have the shit made in a few minutes, and it's affordable, nobody will care.

I want one so it gives me an excuse to learn a CAD program.

I'm also too poor to afford one, but I can dream.

Still fairly expensive. I would learn CAD and buy one if it was more affordable.

Though, two big libraries that are about 10-15 minutes away from me do have them.

Shot in the dark, but I'm trying to print some 3D files for someone.

It's basically just a box with a hole in the bottom:

that's what it looks like when I load it into the software.

When I actually print the file though, the printer fills the hole in the bottom in:

what is the cause of this? Is it the way the guy is designing the files?

If I orient the print in a different way, it adds even more crazy stuff (this is from the print preview):
