Why aren't more people talking about how amazing Wii U Pro Controller is?

I need some more games to come out that will use it (I currently have Sonic Racing and that's it!).

That, and I'm aggravated that the White Pro Controller isn't out in the UK so I need to import (as long as it will work on my system!).

I find Pro Controller to be a big turd.

Less comfortable than the Gamepad, for one. All sticks, buttons, d-pads are easy to reach on Gamepad, so the decision to have face buttons lower didn't matter. Here everything's bigger, which has the effect of moving Y uncomfortably far from where my thumb wants to default, something less a problem with a stick since you can push to the far side from a contact position in the middle or even near side.

Whereas we first thought of Pro Controller as Gamepad without screen, it's also without speaker, microphone, motion control. So even games that aren't using the screen in an important way can't be assumed to work on Pro.

Add to that the lack of any analog shoulder it inherited from the Gamepad, and in the end we'e left with a controller that's functionally inferior to both PS3 and X360 controllers and still being asked to pay $50 for it.

Seriously, is this basically not the culmination of controller perfection?

+ Digital triggers - This may bothersome but other than racing titles where you're not supposed to drive flat-out all the time, I struggle to think of many games that need analog inputs. It's why I always preferred L1/R1 for shooting as an example

This automatically invalides the controller as perfection. Maybe it's a genre you don't play, but the digital triggers make this controller useless for serious racing games.

I don't have any Wii U plans at this point, but I would like to try that controller, if only for shooters I imagine it'd very comfortable. I bought a PowerA AirFlo controller and not long after I started using it, I thought that it would be more comfortable if both of the sticks were top, given the constant use of the right stick. (Having said that, I'm now back to using the the DS3, so I'm not sure if it was entirely to do with stick placement or if controller ergonomics were an element.)

By not including analog triggers they lost the possibility of Wii U running un-modified GC games. Such a shame considering no emulation would have been needed.

Personally I also prefer controllers that have some weight to them.

Yup. Especially the weight and material used. I love that it's a heavy controller.

Ah, another heavy controller lover. I must say I like this too, I usually play with the controller in my lap and it feels better when it's heavy. For this reason I like the DualShock 3 better than the plain Sixaxis, because the shock engines give it more weight.

looks ok, but yeah, a few key things you listed as positives are big negatives.

digital triggers and the stick placement are huge negatives. that thing that MS got right is one of the most important things, and N got it wrong.

This is the thing about the Pro Controller: it defeats the entire purpose of the Wii U. If you are giving developers the option to make traditional games that make no use of the Gamepad, why would they ever bother to do so? Third parties (lol) could just do a straight port with toned down graphics from the true next gen consoles, make a quick buck and never have to design any gamepad functionality at all.

I played some Sonic & All Stars Racing with it and it's definitely a solid controller. I'd really have to play more different games with it to come to a consencus though.

...it's primary purpose is for multi-player.

I would have picked one up but I keep hearing you can't use it on the Wii side for VC games.

Disappointing.

I would think they'd patch it in after hearing people complain about that, but...well, Nintendo. Maybe they're assuming that people will be willing to pay the transfer fee for wii to wii-u VC games just so that they can play with the newer controllers.

Alright. I saw posts like this and was incredibly confused. Just certain people on GAF slinging around hyperbole like they always do when it comes to controls, I guess.

That's not hyperbole. It's the truth. Ask MH3U players. They will say the same thing.

That's entirely Monster Hunter's fault. The series has awful controls -- don't blame Nintendo if their excellent controller doesn't cater to psycho fans.

Monster Hunter has awful controls? News to me.

Then you're agreeing with what he said

What? He was saying that the Pro Controller existing means that it gives devs a reason to not bother with any Gamepad specific features in their games.

I'm however saying that because the Pro isn't the main controller, very few devs will think like that because most people won't even own it.

Which is what exactly? That developers are so lazy that you have to force them to use features that can be used to attract buyers of their product?

When did options get to be a bad thing again? It seems to switch around quite a bit.

It's more about how the gamepad is the centerpiece of the WiiU, its trump card against other systems, and the Pro Controller defeats that purpose.

yeah seems like we're going on different things

- Nintendo's incompetence in not making it mandatory every fucking game requires it's support IE: NSMB-U, etc.

This sums it up for me, it's one of my frustrations with the Wii U. There are three different controllers you can be using, and if you want to buy some extras to play with your friends there are no assurances that every game will support every controller. Some games already require a separate Motionplus controller (Nintendoland), Wii games don't support the Gamepad (motionplus games I understand, but what about waggle games?), some games support the gamepad and pro controller but not the motionplus...It's a mess. I don't want to buy two controllers for each potential friend playing.

If this was the default controller I would already own a WiiU.

Are the sticks stiffer, my right stick on the gamepad is so loose its making playing games hard.
They seem the same to me.

Only played a bit of Trine 2 with it. There's no games I like that use it...
Haha, yeah, only game I've got that uses it is Balloon Fight.

Multiplatform games are never going to make the most amazing use of it. It's almost for the best if they don't bother, so off-screen play can be sure to work without a hitch. But as for why they'd bother: to look more attractive next to other Wii U games.

I saw a thread a few days ago announcing someone found a way to make the pro controller PC compatible, that might help answer your questions. Try searching.

Actually here it is

Thanks a bunch!

Could someone elaborate on why the face buttons seem to leave a lot to be desired? What other controller's face buttons would you compare them to?

They should just go for an HD super console that supports the old Wii controllers but have this as its primary type. They still have time to drop the whole Wii U idea and go for Super Wii. Or rather Super NES HD, or Ultra Nintendo, anyway you get the idea...

I think I 'm out of topic but really it's all because this pad really looks like the hardcore gamer's heaven.

NSMBU requires tilt in later levels, and the Pro Controller has no motion sensing.

And yes you can navigate menus with it.

There is literally one level in the main adventure that uses tilt and it comes right at the end. Completely BS reason IMO. Not that I had a problem using the GamePad, it's still pretty lame.

Really?

Yeah, that's fucking lame

Anyway, played some more Sonic tonight ...with the controller ...my god ...thing is sexaaaaay

Got the pro yesterday, played some COD and must say, 61-10 in ground war had me feeling it was the controller, my skill with a USB connection which should remove( may be wrong),

The form factor is great, but no analogue triggers and wrong stick placement on the right side are serious failings. I think the WiiU Gamepad is perfectly serviceable, even if it has the same mistakes, that thing is surprisingly comfortable to hold.

I really want to get my hands on one of those. Hopefully I'll force myself to get a Wii U soon but I've been pretty excited about the PS4 this last week.

Why do people keep saying no game supports it? From what I've read just about every single 3rd party multiplatform game and ZombiU supports the controller.

I'm actually beginning to resent this controller

Why?

Because it emphasizes just how fucking uncomfortable the actual GamePad is for me :(

I wish I could use it for NSMBU. It's great for NG3RE, Trine 2, MH3U demo, TTT2, etc.

Such differing thoughts. I find the Gamepad to be the most comfortable SNES-style controller Nintendo has made yet.
It's great for F-Zero VC, but I have to remap L/R to the triggers. Shoulder buttons just aren't great placement wise imo.

I agree ZL and ZR are better and I switch them too. But I've never found any of the SNES/GBA/DS/CC shoulders very comfortable so at least having one set on a comfortable shelf here is a big step up.

Wish the triggers were more like Gamecube. It takes some getting used to, but I enjoy it.

Bought one for the inevitable use of it for Smash Bros. and have since used it in Assassin's Creed and Sonic Racing. Worked very well for what those games were.
