Why aren't there more fiction pieces set during the Crusades?

Who wants to watch Christians gets routinely spanked by Muslims?

Nobody wants to see Christians as the bad guys, or on the losing side.

Because white people don't want to see them get their ass beat. That's why WWII movies are so popular.

Not all of the crusades were unsuccessful. Its like saying nobody would want a roman empire movie because no-one wants to see white people get defeated or be the bad guys. Nonsensical imo.

It's simply a much less popular period of history despite being very complex and interesting.

Robin Hood is set during the Crusades. Robin was driven to outlawry because of the misrule of John while King Richard the Lionheart was away fighting in the Crusades.

The crusades is a difficult topic to approach. Modern Era would have you believe it was all about evil Christians picking on defenseless Muslims who just wanted to be left in peace. It was a extended period of history that has intrigue and all sorts of twists and turns.

nobody has really thought like that since Runciman in the 1950s. Saying that, popular understanding about the crusades is still largely rooted in what he wrote.

Pretty sure Thomas Madden did a decent article on this subject, but can't be fudged to find it.

You're correct that it takes place during the same timeframe, but the setting of the movie still focuses on Western Europe (specifically the Kingdoms of England and France)

I'd imagine that historical dramas would be more appealing as miniseries; such as Rome and Band of Brothers. Perhaps a movie set in history is just too risky to finance as the chances are high it would become a box office flop. You'd be better off watching docudramas on the Crusades, OP.

I can't think of a ton off the top of my head but check out Arn, I really enjoyed this one:

I think it has a sequel as well, but I've never seen it.

There is another one on Netflix called Ironclad, also decent.

But you're right, not a lot out there... Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves?

EDIT - Season of the Witch, but I guess that is really more like retired Crusaders who came back home. Plus, it's not a very good film ;)
