Why did the 'Battle of five armies' get so much hate?

So is it just the third movie that was disliked on a large scale?

It's certainly the one that was most disliked. None of them have a reputation close to that of the LOTR movies. And they all suffered from the fact that they had to be stretched out, the addition of dumb subplots, etc.

Because it was an unnecessary 2.5 hour movie? I mean, I would've been completely fine if the Hobbit was just two movies instead of three....

I have to admit I've been guilty of avoiding movies and games based upon an internet community's opinion. I'm finding out all too often that my opinion is at odds with a community that freely calls movies and games "utter and pure shit" so freely.
I agree. Before watching this movie I was aware of the hate, so I was expecting a terrible movie but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I have watched the other two and I thought the first one was pretty good whilst the second one was quite tedious apart from the smaug/bilbo scenes and the barrel escape scenes. The last one was enjoyable throughout.

CGI Billy Connolly running around headbutting CGI orcs for 5 minutes was the stupidest thing I'd seen in a long time, then the movie topped it with the Legolas super mario crumbling bridge scene.

I caught it for free on HBO and it wasn't as bad as people said it was going to be, but it was definitely far worse than I had hoped.

I personally think all three Hobbit movies were fundamentally flawed in one way or another, the third's biggest problem was its horrendous CGI, stupid fight sequences/logic, and poor pacing. Also a reliance on afterthought Wormtongue/Alfred/whoever scenes that felt like they broke the fourth wall with how obvious they were being used as padding.

Galadriel/Sauron epileptic cringe scene was also very un-good. "You have no powaaaaaa heaaaaa! go back from whence u caaaaaaame!" ZZZZZzzzzzz please write something less cliché, PJ!

If you cared about the story of the first two movies at all, Jackson wrapped up those story threads in the first 15 minutes. The rest of the movie is a soulless cash-in fight scene that lacked any of the emotional resonance of the battles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

You guys didn't like the book or knew nothing about the story before hand?

Really shocked you saw all 3 thinking they all sucked. Why would you even bother at that point.

Dude I love the book.

But I was doubtful before I even saw the first one that it was going to translate well onto the screen. And it just didn't. I felt no connection to any of the characters at all and as much as they tried to spin the dwarves motivation into something more momentous I didn't find the story compelling at all. A constant distraction for me was how hideous the visual identity of the trilogy was.

Basically, I might have enjoyed the films better if I had never seen the LotR trilogy. Those films were better than the Hobbit trilogy in every category and the sense of disappointment just crushed any chance of enjoying them.

For me, it's like a ritual. The LotR films are classics to me, I rewatch the extended editions every few years. The Hobbit trilogy is not and will never be a classic piece of entertainment. The best I can say is that I might watch the extended versions of each Hobbit movie just in case it fixes the pacing issues all three movies had but otherwise I have no interest in seeing them again.

Movie drags on and on and on, Legolas straight up rips off Metal Gear Rising, and the CG is somehow worse than the LOTR movies

Someone else already mentioned it but it was indeed shallow. I figured I'd at least enjoy the fighting but it was really boring.

Some reason they feel the need to make Legolas more over the top. I guess they felt the need to make his actions better than the first trilogy else people would complain.

This was on point with the complaints.

I think the book has the goblins and wargs as two separate armies.

Wargs in the novels are intelligent and independent. They speak ( though lots of animals talk in both lotr and the hobbit. Taking away the eagles was somewhat damaging

Note I haven't read the book.

That being said, even I could tell that shit was way too long and contained far too much filler. I know the book is the shortest of the four, which means they somehow managed to stretch one book into around six and a half ours of screen time iirc.

So much could have been cut. The middle section of the first movie could have been scrapped, the middle of the second movie could have easily been scrapped, and the last third of DoS and entire final movie could easily have combined and molded either into a single movie or a final half of one hobbit movie.

The whole story line of this fuck was annoying to no end, with no resolution.

It was utter garbage.

Comparable to the generic 'turn off your brain to enjoy' Michael Bay films, but a shoddy conclusion that saw the majority of the story arcs go unresolved.

Peter Jackson didn't really want to do this trilogy and it showed.

Third act is trash. Big action scenes make no sense, have no weight, and end with a whimper. The one-on-ones are borderline cartoonish, and I gave no shits about Thorin by the end.

Denouement is utterly unsatisfying on its own, atrocious if you compare it with ROTK.

I could go on, but it's like Jackson forgot how to make a movie. Terrible.

Desolation of Smaug was disappointing but Five Armies was the final nail in the coffin. Loved the Bilbo/Thorin scenes but felt the rest of it was pretty underwhelming.

I think maybe it is because there really didn't need to be 3 movies and this last one drags on a bit.

I generally liked the movies, but I did find it strange that a 3 hour film can simultaneously feel like it's dragging on too long AND missing important scenes.

The hobbit should have been just two movies and Battle of The Five Armies has all the bad parts that carry from this being a trilogy and having to strech it.

- Unnecessary Tauriel subplot and romanace.
- Unnecessary Legolas and Tauriel fights.
- Unnecessary LOTR linking scenes, even if they are cool for a tolkien fan.
- We still have parts with the major of laketown and his servant.
- Loong battle and we still need more physical orcs and less cgi orcs.
- The best parts are always the ones with bilbo and the dwarfs but having so much others things happening it gets lost a little.

There are excellent parts in the movie but it all gets drag down by the bad parts.

It's the cinematic equivalent of an extra extra large pizza from a really poor quality pizza joint. They used to be fantastic about ten years back, you couldn't get enough. Then management fucked with the recipe, started using processed cheese etc. and it just wasn't the same anymore.

You didn't even want the pizza that big, you felt sick after the first few slices. I don't know how to phrase dwarf/elf love as a pizza analogy but that was shite as well.

Just curious - Does this even work? Looks always like straight out of a cartoon.

I don't think so. The rocks are in freefall, so he wouldn't be able to get any net vertical height by jumping off of them since they aren't too difference in mass.

If you want to ruin this movie for yourself forever, think about this:

It's a fully CGI animated battle sequence in which a stronghold is being assaulted from all sides by other armies. Walls are being broken and enemies pouring in, and at one point, this guy shows up, riding a pig and wielding a hammer:

It's a hog ridaaaaahhhhhhh!

The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies is actually a commercial for Clash of Clans.

Well the beginning should have been the ending of the second movie and the rest was pretty much just one long fight.

It's a shame how the last 2 movies turned out, thought the first was pretty good actually.

Looks like a cutscene from PS3/360 Jrpg.

It just feels like a film with a lot going on with no substance to it. All three of the movies have that feeling of it dragging on for far too long with nothing at stake to make me care. Also, the ending was the best part. Made me smile.

Scouts honor, I saw it on release and don't really remember it. The battle with Smaug... that ringwraith fight... and a hazy recollection of dwarf armies. That's honestly it. Oh shit and that deputy guy who was in it more then Bilbo haha!

Big LOTR fan and I've read The Hobbit numerous times over my life, by the way.

The Hobbit should not have been three movies.

Two I could see MAYBE. But stretching it out that long completely ruined the pacing and structure of the story. The additional material added in didn't fit and to me the whole thing was a trainwreck. The second movie was at least decent.

Have they been fan-edited into one movie yet?

Its an absolute embarrassment and that's not just to Tolkeins original works, but also to the original LOTR movie trilogy.

The Orlando Bloom stuff was pretty cringe worthy, but did they really need to make 90 year old Christopher Lee use Instant Transmission and shoot Kamehamehas?

That shit was awful.

Well elves don't even make footprints in the snow (watch Fellowship and you'll see what I mean; good attention to detail), and considering some of the crazy shit Legolas does in this series, I'm sure this is "feasible". Doesn't mean it's not goofy as fucking hell though.

I think it's just a really bad movie. The visuals are bland, character arcs magically resolving themselves, all the Macguffins are forgotten by the end, the battle just ends in the background because of reasons, the action itself is at best forgettable.

The shot of Smaug slicing up Laketown in the middle like it's nothing is probably the only "good" thing in this movie. Maybe that one scene with Gandalf and Bilbo. You know which one.

It's the only one I didn't finish, I stopped just as the orcs showed up, which is less than 40 mins in if I remember, I just had no desire to sit through it at all, and this is from someone who liked An Expected Journey and Desolation. It just felt empty and lifeless to watch.

It wasn't even close to any of the LotR movies, but I still liked it. That scene where the tower falls over to form a bridge was fucking stupid though. Just so ridiculous.

Return of the King will probably never be topped for me. My favorite film of all time.

i dont think it was terrible. it was maybe a bit drawn out, but i wouldnt characterize it as "long" since i generally enjoyed it.

as a cohesive whole, the hobbit didn't really do too much. should have probably been two movies, or at least focused on actual characters/development a bit more than the actiony stuff.

also Bilbo wasn't really the focus and should have been at least 50% of the focus.

It was literally one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Thinking back, I can't recall any redeeming factors. I hovered between being bored silly and feeling insulted the entire time.

I love the LotR franchise. Return of the King is my favorite movie of all time. I thought the first 2 Hobbit movies were fairly enjoyable. But BotFA is trash.

It really rammed home to me how much better it would have been as two films for me. Far too much filler battle-wise, as well as some dull dialogue. Everything in the film was taken to 11, but I didn't mind that so much as I don't feel adaptations have to be identical to the source material.

I felt it was better than Smaug, but it would have been much better cut with half of Smaug and less filler.
