Why did the GameCube controller not have a left Z button?

The 360 is the only console's controller I prefer over the Gamecube's. I've never understood complaints. It's comfortable, it has the best stick of the three last gen, nice shoulder triggers, a logical face layout...I was fine with it.

I never had a real problem with the controller layout besides the crappy triggers and d-pad.

However i will say it was the most comfortable controller of all 3 last gen.

What didn't you like about the triggers, Pachunga? Was it that they depress in a straight line instead of rotating around a fulcrum, the digital click or something else?

All of what you just mentioned + the length of a full depression of the buttons + they are WAY oversized.

Anybody who says this clearly does not remember The Duke.

Edit: Silly me, yeah thats the huge one, except i got an xbox closer to the end of the cycle, so i didn't have to deal with that fat thing.

No, controller 'S' doesn't have those absurdly crappy oval face buttons.

or generate its own event horizon

Actually its the back/start buttons that i tend to remember. Actually if you look at the pictures of them side by side the controllers are really different.

Oh and i guess it was just the sheer massiveness of it that makes it black, maybe it was white and we never knew it.

It's like a 3 inch depression well, way overdone.

If you have big hands, that was the best controller ever made.

If you had hands large enough to fit around that thing, your thumb is probably so big that you'd hit all the face buttons at once.

But at least the Duke had usable black/white buttons, I hated the 'S' Controller.

The 360 controller is a d-pad short of perfection though, easily my favourite of all time.

This is probably the most comfortable controller ever, I could care less abot the "missing" button.

I completely agree that it is the most comfortable controller. Also, the analog stick is a big improvement over the N64's. I'm too scared to play my N64 because I might ruin the stick! :lol

3. Start button - Um....this is actually good. Can't get that wrong.
Except that it also needed a Select button.

Aside from that I agree with you on every point. I'd have been proud to make that rant, but I didn't have the energy for it.

And yeah, I seem to remember people saying that developers came to Nintendo begging for dual triggers, and Miyamoto said "No. Buttons scare and confuse old people. You'll get single L&R buttons and you'll like it because I'm telling you to like it." Then the developers said "What about the N64? It had a Z-button and everyone loved it. Nobody got it confused with the L trigger." (Actually, a lot of stupid people got confused by the "three hand" setup of the N64 controller.) Miyamoto caved and said "Okay, you can have a Z trigger, but just one, and that's only because the N64 had it."

Just one more lousy design decision in a controller full of them. And still no an excuse for making it a crappy trigger.

I think the problem with the Z button is more in the label.

The Z button on the N64 was obviously a highly functional action button, which clearly was not the intention of the GC Z button. It's essentially a reincarnation of the "Select" button.

Nintendo should have just named it as such, and they would have avoided a lot of confusion.

I love the GCN controller except for when I play Mega Man X Collection. It's pretty much impossible to slide, jump, and hold a charged shot. I hurt my thumb doing that for an hour and couldn't play for two days

There is way too much hate for the GC controller. Out of the 3 I thought it best. Having lots of face buttons, with the same shape is way too difficult. I loved the A, B and kidney system. It worked really well. I would say the D pad was not good.

In the PS2 controller, I didn't like having 4 shoulder buttons. I didn't know whether to put my index and middle fingers at the back or just the index. If I put both I found I wasn't holding the controller firmly, and put too much strain on the pinky and other finger. Hence why I like the idea of only one side with 2 shoulder buttons. The other hand could hold the controller firmly. Also the ergonomics of GC was the best.

In conclusion, the d-pad was the only let down. PS - I didn't really buy many ports or 3rd party games, so maybe a lot of you have a point, but then again, that's nothing to do with a poor controller, more like a lazy dev.

Seriously if you think the GCN controller was bad, then the PS2 and Xbox controller must have been like horse shit. The Xbox controller felt like a brick with brightly coloured buttons and the Dual Shock had analog sticks so loose they didn't need to exist.

Well, you're right. They were. The 360 controller is awesome, though. The DualS--- I mean, Sixaxis is pretty sad though. I hated the Dualshock, and they just keep using the same form. The Wiimote also needs work. It's kind of clunky.
