Why didn't Kryptonians escape Krypton?

But our sun is white--it's the Earth's atmosphere that makes it appear yellow.

It's a Yellow Dwarf though. It's more the age of the sun than the color that matters.

wait.. now im confused.. superman is from an alien race, where, they are all super? arent they all essentially invincible? how could a planet blowing up kill them? and cant they all just fly away into space, and fly to some other planet together.. ?

Read this thread.

Kryptons sun an atmosphere makes them as powerful as an average human. Earth's environment and sun gives Superman his powers.

Superman/Kryptonians get powered up under a yellow sun. Krypton had a lame ass red one.

There is a comic about jor el. Supermans dad was pretty smart and invented anti grav technology as well as the phantom zone to hold criminals.

However the entire race became dependent on Braniac, the AI. They no longer directly looked at seismic activity data, trusting Brainiacs analysis. Only his dad discovered the truth and Brainiac politically outmanuevered him. In the end he did not have enough resources to build a spaceship to fit all three of them, though I believe his mom could have fit but chose to stay behind with his dad.

However, this was a comic from the 60s or 70s. I'm not sure its still canon.

I just wish there was at least one rendition that totally made sense. The origin can be tweaked and still make a bit of sense. I also hate the "ermergherd" the yellow sun gives me POWAH. That don't make no sense.

Cause the Eagles were too tired to carry Frodo to Mt. Doom at the time.

Nah, the destruction of the ring had to be done stealth style, besides, the Eagles prob. don't care if all of man died since they can always join the Elves in whatever Heaven they were leaving Middle Earth for.
They just help Gandalf prob. cuz they're close friends or he owes them a few.

You have to ask yourself why did all the colonies died off when they were cutoff from Krypton even with all those machines they still had? It had to be because that Krypton was providing a lot of resource to those colonies to keep those colonies functioning. So once Krypton started to run low on resources, they had to institute some sort of resource rationing and population control.

I don't think they just decided to stop exploring one day, I figure that they couldn't justify all those expense for what little they got back from colonization like our policies with NASA.

edit: This is based from watching the movie of course.

I'm more inclined to believe that Krypton is homage to Helium of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom, a world that was dying when John Carter, an alien from Earth, arrived.

It doesn't really matter why Krypton was doomed and why its inhabitants didn't escape.

Is there ever a good explanation why the technologically advanced Kryptonians didn't leave their doomed planet or at least have a huge portion of their population outside their planet and immune to its destruction? In every lore I'm aware of, they were somewhat space-faring to begin with?

Were they hiding their "footprint" in space because they worried attracting a more advanced, aggressive race or conquerer from invading? Like Darkseid or something?

Then there would be no fucking story

Nothing more annoying then people trying to act smart looking for loop holes in a fucking comic book story

I always go with the John Byrne version where the Kryptonians were genetically bonded with Krypton, so that if they left, they'd die.

If this isn't the reasoning in Man of Steel, then that movie is fucking stupid.

I think it, because it has a scene where
Zod found every single Kryptonian colony died.

In the animated series, the artificial intelligence that ran all of the systems on the planet knew of the impending apocalypse, but obscured the data from the people. If the people knew, they would use all of the AI's resources to try and solve an unsolvable problem - and the AI needed those resources to devise an escape strategy for itself.

There's a logic to it. The computer knew that the people couldn't be saved in time, but knew that it could save itself and did so. This wasn't entirely selfish either - the AI held the records, history, art and science of the Kryptonian civilisation, and reasoned that if it survives, then not all of Krypton will be lost.

After the destruction of the planet, a group of poor aliens survey the devastation, and find the computer core. It promptly expands its AI into the ship's hardware, kills the crew and uses the vessel to escape.

I don't know if that's "canon" or whatever, but I liked it and internalised it.

So, psychotic computer is the reason why?

Superman/Kryptonians get powered up under a yellow sun. Krypton had a lame ass red one.

But why? Surely photons emitted from Yellow Suns would be indistinguishable to those emitted from Red Suns. Or UV lights for that matter.

Hell, is Superman just one massive Photoelectric Cell?

plot device.

I like that older military chick Kryptonian woman who did escape. She was sexy. Forget Supergirl and Powergirl.

more recently, they were 'forbidden to leave' due to politics and arrogance. The scientists were unwilling to believe JorEl's predictions, unwilling to appear weak before everyone. And mind you, weird green emissions and strange planetary earthquakes for months...basically it was supposed to be a cautionary tale about the folly of human intellect and weakness.

Usually, it's down to prideful arrogance and hubris. A technologically advanced society that simply couldn't accept they had made a mistake and that a cataclysm was on the way, ignoring Jor-el's warnings.

I liked what the animated series did, though, having Brainiac be a powerful Kryptonian AI that purposefully hid the truth in order to preserve itself. Quite a clever idea.

Nothing more annoying that people trying to act smug by shutting their brains off because a story is from a comic book.

You are looking at it from the wrong angle. Comics, like Superman, are the creation of many years of revisions, reboots and various writers visions. One can try to streamline it, reinterpret, clarify, but it becomes difficult to plug all possible plot holes.

Like many media, comics require a measure of suspension of disbelief.

Well you've got Kandor.

Also Doomsday, Kara, the other Kara (Powergirl), the other Superwoman, the dog, and Zod etc all survived too.

"Last son of Krypton - except for like 200 others".

I thought the common explanation was that Jor-El was the only one that truly believed the planet was dying, and everyone ignored him up until the final moments.

That is the most mind boggling things of all time, especially in the new movie.

In the new movie they actually went through a whole period of colonization and they just said "fuck it" and decided not to do it anymore for reasons that just defy logic or reason.

In the original it seems more tragic, like they never really decided to leave home - closer to the way humanity is.
Almost as unbelievable as China suddenly halting all exploration because reasons and secluding itself when it was about 200 years ahead of Europe in math and cartography.

Or the Mamaluk Empire crumbling when one dude fell down a staircase.

Or the Muslim world going on a religious bent after centuries of scientific advancement and burning a bunch of libraries because, again, reasons.

in the comic continuity that featured this origin, it was because once Kryptonians got that power, they became major dicks(a common theme with Kryptonians).
They became hated throughout the universe, self-exiled themselves to their home planet and went for mental and creative pursuits instead of expansion and exploration and conquering (and the killing of possibly billions as they took over other races).

Also their entire genetic make up and caste system was engrained to live in by and for the people of Kryton. It's also apparent they didn't had all the resources (time/power) to do a mass exodus of an entire planet. They also thought that extracting energy from the planets core would be a multi solution, but it failed. They got to old, isolationist and stubborn in their old traditions, that's why even if the planet is going to blow up they still condemn Zod and his guys to the PZ.

At least that's my takeaway from this movie.

They couldn't leave planet because their xbone would only work on Krypton. Who would want to live on Earth ?

What, they think they're too good for the Xbox 360?

Anyway, I feel like the comics explain this a lot better than the movie. Then again, part of the reason why we accept these reasons is because it is a comic :P
