Why didn't you buy a Neo Geo CD?

I was always impressed with Neo Geo screenshots but to this day I have never seen one in real life or in the shops so I didn't really have a chance to buy one at the time.

It's a flawed system that only exists as an attempt to lower prices. The original AES carts were just too expensive to manufacture and sell. By moving to cheap CDs it was suddenly possible to sell those same games to people for much less.

Of course, they botched the whole thing with an obscenely slow CD-ROM drive. The CDZ is an improvement but still way too slow.

I was 4 when it came out and never knew it existed, and to this day never seen one or actually known someone who owned one.

There's one on ebay right now, buy it now, $125 with free shipping. Buy it now prices are usually rip offs in their own right, too.

Looking at completed auctions, I see one sold for $27 with $20 shipping. I see another sold for $21 with $37 shipping.

The back of magazines.

There are several that went for around $100 plus super expensive shipping. Its not cheap to get your hands on.

Plus I can only find one of your cheap listings and it is console only no controller or even power/ av cables.

I did!!! The load times were no fucking joke!! I had the original model not the CDZ with 2x the speed of the CD Drive.

Cheaper Neo Geo CD:

Neo Geo CDZ with twice the speed CD drive:

I was 8 or so, and I don't remember any other consoles growing up around then besides Atari, Nintendo, Sega, and Sony. Plus the Saturn & PS1 came out shortly after that

Looking from a purely 2d prespective, as both machines were renowned for their 2d prowess

Which console was more capable, the Saturn or Neo Geo CD? (in terms of 2D)

I didn't even know it existed until I got to know a friend of mine that had one, which was several years after it was discontinued.

I've been super tempted to buy one, especially since here in Tokyo you can find one for around $30, but the loading times, the absence of a couple of NeoGeo games that I want from the CD library (Blazing Stars and others) and the fact that the games cost more than the console have kept me away from it...

I might buy one of these one day if I become stupidly rich http://www.analogueinteractive.com/collections/analogue-cmvs/products/analogue-cmvs-slim

I wish I knew it existed. I was hardcore into Nintendo, which just pumped me full of ads via Nintendo Power. And the Genesis was well known from friends/cousins; but noone at my school, neighborhood, or family had a Neo Geo so I was stuck playing those Takara ports of Samurai Shodown on the SNES/Genesis =/

I would have certainly asked for one had I known about it.

Two reasons.

1- I never heard of it.
2- I was a stupid kid who didn't even know what a SNES was called and yet wanted it for Donkey Kong Country.

I have no interest in getting one now since the library doesn't really appeal to me, aside from Metal Slug which I own the collection on the Wii.

Because I didn't know it existed until decades later, and I'm not a fan of the types of games it was known for, anyway.

The single speed CD drive and lack of variety in games kept me away. By the time it came out SNK had already started going full retard with fighting games with only the occasional side scrolling action game and shooter to break it up. I was content with playing the games in the arcade.

I did and it was garbage.

Big loading times, and they localised it for Europe, so it was at 50hz, slower and with black borders. Unacceptable if you wanted the true arcade experience.

Only positive is that the remastered musics were incredible.

Because Sony, Sega and Nintendo were promising the 3D future whilst SNK were riding a third party-free 2D arcade fighting bubble that was about to burst.

I honestly don't recall even seeing a store selling the thing in person in the UK a the time.

And yeah, it was like this expensive, mythical beast.

I had no idea it existed. Nintendo, Playstation and Sega were all I new when I was a kid.

Anyone looking to get into Neo Geo today, don't bother with the Neo Geo CD (or CDZ) or an AES (unless you've got more money than you know what to do with).

This is all you need:

Not mine, but mine is just like that. The Unibios in the middle makes this the ultimate Neo Geo.

I'll just pop down to Tesco!

In KOF 94, it loaded the whole fight in one go, all six characters. But in KOF 98 it was only each character fight at a time. And the loading was longer than most fights would last, especially when one of the characters wasn't on full healty bar.

there are some listed for $99 with expensive shipping that arent selling, yes. You do know you can list anything for any price, right?

I can remember being vaguely aware of it, but it seemed expensive and somewhat limited to fighting games. Moreover, I was not much of a purist back then, so I was OK with playing the gimped versions that SNK put out on other systems when I wanted an SNK fix.

Still, basically everything "Neo Geo" still has this unobtainable and cool aesthetic in my mind. I reckon that would have been ruined had I ever bought one of their systems (well, other than the pocket color, but that hardly counts).

14 year old Foltize, "What is a Neo Geo CD?"

I don't recall seeing more than a passing mention in EGM. By the time I was 14 I had given up on owning a Neo Geo console due to its price and just played Magician Lord at the arcade.

In hindsight, the system looked awful from a functional standpoint with its 1X CD drive.*

*Still, Neo Geo game quality.

It was one of the first things I bought with my own money earned from my first job, back in 1998. Had a Dreamcast since launch too. Try harder GAF. Where is the 'Why didn't you buy the Bandai Pippin?' thread?
Because as much as I'd like to fiddle with Tunin' Glue, I didn't have the hundreds of dollars required to buy one. :(

Dude you used a system only listing(No power/AV Cables or controller) justify claiming he got ripped off.

You don't even know what came with that $200(games, the box etc). But it damn sure came with cables and a controller.

OP probably got KOF 95 free which is worth 2 cents but still

I can't fully get behind any console with its library entirely based on arcade titles. Without longer single-player experiences, it's just not worth the investment. Similar issue with the Dreamcast, to a much lesser extent.

Yeah, there are completed auctions for neo geo controllers going for $25 + 4 shipping. I just found an av cable for $1.99, and an AC adapter for $3.99.

None of this adds up to $200. The guy absolutely overpaid.

You do know that system only listings are almost always broken right? "I don't have the cables so I can't test it" is usually a total lie. They have them and know it doesn't work.

"Comes with console only. The CD tray does not close on it's own and requires tape to be held down. The hinge will require work. The console is in fair shape and was working as recently as two years ago. Has not been tested since as we do not have the required power cable."

Yeah sure mr ebay seller, I believe you.

I was young

and i don't have money like how I do now

still wouldnt buy one. I got that knock off neogeo im happy with even if its not the full experience and just emulation

im happy with my product without paying out the butt for carts and long cd load times at 1x speed

what a crock. I've bought tons and tons of system only listings before. You're reaching so hard now.
From the $120 listing:

Everything is tested and working 100%. The console is used in beautiful clean condition (see pictures).

The Neo Geo is plenty desirable, and the MVS is actually mostly affordable. You can pick up Garou: Mark of the wolves for like $40 if you look around (although obviously the AES version will cost waaaaaaaaay more).
For 40$, it has to be a bootleg copy, or you are mixing Garou:MOTW with the early Fatal Fury games under their Japanese names, because that's about the price for Fatal Fury 1-2-3 mvs, loose. Prices are going for 100+ for a legit copy on the neogeo forums nowadays, and thats where the deals are for mvs stuff. I think I paid 70$ for mine and it was in a group purchase where we bought like 30 copies from a japanese distro

I bought Garou from a poster on Assembler for $40, totally wasn't a bootleg.

EDIT: This was... oh shoot, maybe 7 years ago, though.
