Why do all full priced Ubisoft games have bad characters and story?

I watched a review that said the main character in AC: Rogue was arguably the best AC main character they've ever had.

Is that not the consensus? (still waiting on current gen version)

hmmm i recall reading impressions that he was a whiny dude in the gaf OT.

waiting for pc one to see.

What games have good characters and stories these days?

Borderlands, The Last of Us, Uncharted, Delsin is alright in ISS though I know there's disagreement there, Ace Attorney games, Ghost Trick, Danganronpa, Ni No Kuni could be if not for it's glacial pacing, TES and Fallout games generally have great lore but not particularly great characters.

Pretending literally no games have worthwhile stories or writing is bullshit

Rather than bad, I'd say simple stories (most games have simple stories, storytelling and characters make a simple story to stand out).
Characters are bland, sure but mostly because the storytelling does not portrait them properly. Ubisoft's main characters have a backstory and an internal conflict and the writting does a jod job telling you that, the problem is in storytelling that is deeply tamed by Ubisoft's open world formula.

I wish Ubisoft would return a bit more to their roots with regards to their storytelling. During the Gamecube era they had games like Beyond Good and Evil and Prince of Persia, which to me, had really well told stories with interesting characters.

I've never played Beyond Good and Evil, but it might have a decent story? I seem to recall hearing one of the Prince of Persia games (Sands of Time?) also had a decent story, but I didn't finish it.

The one recent Ubisoft game I DID finish was Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. I liked it so much I had forgotten it was Ubisoft. No DRM, no uplay, good price, no paid DLC. And actually, I liked the story, voice acting, and soundtrack. The storytelling is one of the highlights of the game. *edit* I just realized that this game with its cheap price would not be considered "AAA" so it may be outside the topic of discussion.

I'm not aware of any great examples besides those 3, however.

I could say the same about the largest publisher in the world, Activision.... or any other number of game publishers.

just asking, cheese breh

you didn't mention FFCC:RoF tho

I thought some of the Ubisoft games I've played recently have had at least a few memorable characters like Vaas, Ezio, Silas Greaves, John Tanner. The stories in the game haven't been anything exceptional, but better than your average AAA game.

I think the story and presentation for the AC series was steadily improving up to Revelations.
Ezio finding the last piece of Eden and talking to Desmond .
is probably my favorite story ending in a video game ever.

That was very well done. Ezio was not bland, and had a great character arc.

Expecting AAA to have good story or characterization sadly is something i rarely expect. Now a functional game on the other hand...
